Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

Today, the San Francisco Giants traded Mauricio Dubón to the Houston Astros. In exchange, the Giants received minor league catcher Michael Papierski. The move is fascinating on a number of levels, but the simple version is that it makes sense and shouldn't have caught anyone by too much surprise.

Dubón was out of minor league options. He was a fringe player on the SF Giants' roster. The Giants could give Dubón some rope early on, because rosters were expanded for the season's first month and they had so many injuries. But rosters have come back down to 26, and everyone is getting healthy. There simply wasn't room to keep Dubón, and he could not be sent down.

Some have said that they prefer Dubón to Tommy La Stella, but that's an apples to oranges comparison. They did not fill the same role on the roster—at all. La Stella is here to hit right-handed pitching; Dubón was on the roster to hit lefties. He was always able to do so, including this year. Many have pointed out that he was just getting on a role, but it's important to consider that his hot streak corresponded to the team facing a string of lefty starters. He's been well-below-average in his career (and this season) against same-handed pitching.

The acquisition of Papierski is fascinating. He will report to Triple-A, where he's spent the last two seasons in the Astros' organization. He has great defensive qualities and an extremely discerning eye. In essence, he's exactly the type of player this Giants regime loves. He's also known to have a great personality and clubhouse presence. What this means for the Giants' current catchers on the major league roster, Joey Bart and Curt Casali, is unclear at this point. It could signal some real concern with Bart's swing and miss and strikeout issues, and it could also signal their willingness to deal the 2018 first-round pick. Only time will tell, but this was a very interesting trade.

Is Logan Webb's so-so start cause for concern? Should San Francisco Giants fans expect slugging third base prospect David Villar to get called up soon? Are Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani on the Giants' radar as their free agencies near?

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:

What seems to be the source of Logan Webb’s recent struggles? His Whiff% has dropped about 30% which has reduced his K% and xBA. Do batters have him figured out? Are there mechanical issues?

Is it time to worry a little about Webb? Hasn’t really looked like the same player we saw in the second half of last season.

Is David Villar an MLB caliber dude?

What is the likelihood the Giants go after a player like Aaron Judge or Shohei Ohtani? I believe this team is missing a superstar and a player like that would probably help sell out the park.

Will Brandon Belt be a Giant in 2023?

Who would you rather have starting, Joey Bart or Curt Casali?

It hasn't even been fair. The SF Giants have absolutely dominated the Colorado Rockies dating back to last year, and they continued that theme with an overpowering three-game sweep this week. The Giants and Rockies entered the series with identical records, but it was clear who was the better team when the series was over.

Locked On Giants and Locked On Rockies get together to sift through the wreckage. How have the Giants been able to thoroughly dominate their NL West foes? It all goes back to the 2018-19 offseason, when the SF Giants hired Farhan Zaidi away from the Dodgers to be their President of Baseball Operations. Ironically, Connor Joe was one of Zaidi's first targets that ended up on the major league roster. Now, Joe is arguably the Rockies' best player. A few years after Zaidi was hired, the Giants are getting Connor Joe-like at-bats from every spot in the lineup. Gabe Kapler and his new coaching staff have certainly made a big impact, helping guys like Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, and Buster Posey (last year) improve and reverse declining trends.

It also helps to have overpowering pitchers like Carlos Rodón, a highly effective bullpen, and a lineup that can work counts, get on base, and hit for extra-base power. For the most part, the Rockies have none of that. Their above-.500 record appears to be a mirage, as they've been outscored heavily on the season.

The Rockies are who they thought they were. And the San Francisco Giants are much like they were last year. They're a deep and talented team. They have good starting pitching and will beat you with patience and power.

Alex Cobb pitched very well today, following up Alex Wood's strong performance the night before. The SF Giants have a five-game winning streak heading into an off day and a road trip. They dominated the Rockies in this series, with contributions up and down the lineup.

Yesterday, it was the bottom of the lineup that got things going. Between Luis González, Austin Slater, and Curt Casali, the eight and nine spots in the Giants' lineup didn't make an out. Today, Joey Bart contributed with a big single on an 0-2 pitch. LaMonte Wade Jr. had three hits. Brandon Crawford homered. The bullpen continued to be rock solid.

The Giants are indeed playing good baseball, and they improved to 19-12 with a +40 run differential. They're in a good spot as they head out on the road to once against face the Cardinals and the Rockies.

Mauricio Dubón says "not to fast" to his critics. Carlos Rodón punches out 12 Rockies in six innings. Yes indeed, the San Francisco Giants had a good night as they won their third straight game. Now they must deal with a looming roster crunch.

Dubón's role is to hit left-handed pitching, and he's done that consistently since joining the Giants. He hasn't had a chance to show it off much this year, as the SF Giants have almost exclusively faced right-handed starters. In the past few games, however, Dubón has started against lefties and homered both times. His role looks fairly secure, although the Giants will need to make corresponding moves when they activate Evan Longoria and Tommy La Stella.

Longoria is in San Francisco and ready to be activated. The only player it makes sense to option is Luis González, but he doesn't seem to deserve it. They could option a pitcher and go with 14 positions players against 12 pitchers, but then they'll certainly need to make a move on the position player side when La Stella is ready. They're in a bit of a bind, and a trade is a possibility to help them sort it out. Dubón and Thairo Estrada are among many Giants who cannot be optioned, so it's difficult to tell how they will proceed.

Joey Bart was pinch hit for with the bases loaded and one out, with the Giants leading 5-2. Joc Pederson came in to hit in his place, and lifted a sac fly that extended the Giants' lead. It's unclear exactly how Bart felt about being lifted in that situation, but he didn't appear to be thrilled in the dugout. He walked out with his catchers' gear as the at-bat was starting. Later, however, he could be seen cheering in the dugout. Bart has struck out in over 44% of his plate appearances this year, and that was a situation when they couldn't live with a high probability of a K.

That's more like it! The San Francisco Giants got a much-needed split against the Cardinals this weekend, salvaging the series by winning the last two games. Buster Posey day sparked the Giants to a blowout win on Saturday, and clutch home runs and pitching performances propelled the Giants to a close win on Mother's Day.

They're getting healthy. Brandon Belt, Dom Leone, and Zack Littell were activated off the Covid-IL. LaMonte Wade Jr. finally returned from his knee injury that had kept him out the entire season. Mike Yastrzemski recently came back from the Covid IL and has continued to swing a hot all season. He added a clutch splash hit that was instrumental in Sunday's 4-3 win.

Alex Cobb's spectacular peripherals are discussed. He has an unsightly 4.80 ERA, but the peripherals suggest much better results are coming. He's striking people out at a well-above-average rate, and inducing a crazy rate of ground balls. He, along with Carlos Rodón, Logan Webb, Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, Jakob Junis, Matthew Boyd, and others, should put the Giants in a position to win pretty much every single day.

The Rockies come into town next, with the same 16-12 record as the Giants. However, unlike the Giants, the Rockies have a negative run differential. They've been able to play above their weight class so far, but regression is likely coming. Why not have it start tonight?

The San Francisco Giants have been outscored 48-21 while losing six of their last seven games. There's no doubt they've been on a downward spiral, but it's important to maintain perspective. They're still 14-11 with a +18 run differential. They have guys coming back. A lot of the numbers this past week look fluky and unsustainable.

Baseball is a crazy game sometimes, and right now the Giants are in the midst of a rut we haven't seen from them in a while. They're struggling to score and they're struggling to prevent runs. Thankfully, guys are coming back and they should be able to get into a better offensive groove soon. Joc Pederson and Mike Yastrzemski are healthy and back on the roster. LaMonte Wade Jr. could be activated as soon as tonight.

Tyler Beede was designated for assignment yesterday. The Giants needed a 40-man and 26-man roster spot in order to activate Zack Littell off the Covid-IL. Beede was struggling in a mop-up role, so this is the end of the line for the Giants' 2014 first-round draft pick. He'll likely be traded in the next week.

Two total runs in two games isn't going to cut it. The San Francisco Giants were swept by the Dodgers in emphatic fashion in this two-game series—how concerned should we be about the lifeless offense?

Yes, the Dodgers' pitching was fantastic. Yes, the SF Giants are missing several key players. But still, there is some concern about an offensive unit that has more or less hovered around league average so far in 2022. Part of it is the baseball: it truly appears that this baseball isn't flying as well as the ball in recent years, and it's affecting all teams, including the Giants.

It was good to have Mike Yastrzemski and Joc Pederson back in the lineup yesterday, but they didn't really factor into the offense. Still, with time, they should be able to help the team get back on track. The Giants have lost five of their last six games. They've scored 14 more runs through 24 games this year than they did last year. The DH spot helps, but if anything that's a wash.

LaMonte Wade Jr. could return as soon as tonight. Evan Longoria and Tommy La Stella have begun rehab assignments. Brandon Belt will be back as soon as he can return two negative Covid tests. The Giants are totally banged up, but it's a long season and they should have plenty of time to return to full strength (or something close to it) and get on a roll. At 14-10, they're only one win worse than the 2021 team that went on to win a franchise-record 107 games.

The San Francisco Giants' lineup featured Mauricio Dubón, Kevin Padlo, and Luke Williams. The Dodgers' lineup had Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Trea Turner at the top. Injuries and Covid-19 have ravaged the Giants in recent weeks, and it was on full display in the 3-1 loss on Tuesday.

Carlos Rodón pitched well, but Julio Urias was just a bit better. The SF Giants' lineup was different in part by design, as they were finally facing a left-handed starter for the first time in ages. Austin Slater at the top was no surprise, and Dubón has swung the bat pretty well all year with very little to show for it. Padlo was recently acquired in a trade and had just hit three home runs in a game for Triple-A Sacramento.

Thankfully, reinforcements are on the way. Mike Yastrzemski, who's been out since testing positive for Covid in Washington, DC, could be back tonight. Joc Pederson was able to pinch hit last night and could be back in the lineup tonight. LaMonte Wade Jr.'s return is imminent. Tommy La Stella and Evan Longoria began rehab assignments last night.

Through it all, the Giants still have a solid 14-9 record with the fourth-best run differential in baseball. They'll wrap up their two-game series in Los Angeles tonight with former Dodger Alex Wood on the mound facing off against right-hander Tony Gonsolin.

Carlos Rodón has looked like a Cy Young frontrunner through his first four starts, but will he be gone after 2022? His deal with the Giants gets reported as a two-year, $44 million contract, but in reality it may very well only be a one-year situation. Rodón has the ability to opt out of year two if he reaches 110 innings in 2022. Is it more likely that he opts out, or that he and the San Francisco Giants reach an extension?

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:

Carlos Rodón more likely to opt out after this year or Giants work out an extension?

Is Rodón eligible for the qualifying offer if he reaches 110 IP and opts out of his second year? And how might that affect his market?

What player on the Giants right now is someone you could buy a jersey for now and not look foolish in a few seasons when they end up on the Braves?

If Alex Cobb and/or Tony DeSclafani are out for much longer do you see Jakob Junis being officially added to the rotation?

Any idea when Heliot Ramos might get called up more permanently?

Darin Ruf, how long can the Giants wait? Should they have been more aggressive in FA for a DH?
