Carlos Rodón was an underrated addition, and he and Logan Webb could be legitimate co-aces on one of the best starting staffs in baseball. But their main position player addition was ... Joc Pederson? When stars like Seiya Suzuki, Marcus Semien, Corey Seager, Carlos Correa, Freddie Freeman, and others were available to sign? And the Giants had so much money coming off the books?
Yes, the Giants had a strange offseason. On the one hand, they brought back several key players such as Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford (mid-season extension), Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Wood. They brought in Alex Cobb, who could be a big upgrade at the back of the rotation. They stockpiled pitching depth in the form of Matthew Boyd, Jakob Junis, and Carlos Martinez.
But it's hard not to be underwhelmed by simply adding Pederson to a team that lost the likes of Buster Posey, Kris Bryant, and Donovan Solano. They'll probably be fine, but it's understandable that some fans are frustrated. The Giants' payroll looks to be about flat with last year's final payroll of $162 million. They rank 13th in MLB, but they figure to be a good team that has future flexibility (much better than being stuck with bloated contracts and a bad team, which is what Farhan Zaidi took over in 2018) to make additions if they so desire. They're in a good place as 2022 is set to begin on Friday.

The SF Giants will make a major trade between now and the deadline. Their starting rotation, led by breakout star Logan Webb and newcomer Carlos Rodón, will be a top-three unit in the game. Joey Bart will struggle, and the prospect shine will fall off even more.
Those are some bold predictions for the San Francisco Giants in 2022. And what about their won-loss record? Last year, people expected around 76, and they won 107. What about this year? They seem destined for somewhere in the neighborhood of 90 wins.
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listners about the state of the Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:
Will a move be made before start of season? If so, which position?
Do you think the Giants will let Mike Yastrzemski play every day until or unless he plays himself into a platoon situation?
Do you see any changes to the 40-man roster between now and Opening Day?
What are the chances of Alex Blandino making the team and who would be on the chopping block to get DFA’ed? Or more likely a trade? Would this move make Mauricio Dubón redundant or with these injuries could they keep everyone during April?
Do you think the Giants will stick with a traditional 5 man rotation, or will they try 6, or 5 + a bullpen day? The starters all perform much better with 5+ days of rest, and it could help prevent injury.

A signature of the Farhan Zaidi Era in San Francisco has been the breakout performer. In 2019 it was Mike Yastrzemski and Alex Dickerson. In 2020, it was Kevin Gausman, Darin Ruf, and others. In 2021, LaMonte Wade Jr. and Logan Webb. Who's it going to be in 2022?
Thairo Estrada jumps off the page as someone who may be primed for a breakout season. He hits for contact, he recently showed that he can hit for power, he's athletic, and he can move all around the diamond. He's only 26 years old.
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:
Who do you think is the most likely player to have a breakout year?
Is it worth making a deal for Cedric Mullins? Also, if the Yankees can’t come to terms with Aaron Judge, would you go after him?
What is it that the Giants are unwilling to do that other teams are in order to land top free agents? Is it the number of years we are willing to offer, or the AAV, or do we simply have a payroll cap given to us by ownership? Or do players simply just not want to sign here?
Why don’t they care about right handed power hitters?
Patrick Bailey is obviously Farhan Zaidi's type of catcher, and after a slow start last year, he finished off the year strong and gained the team's confidence that they made the right choice drafting him . Do you think he’s the catcher of the team's future over Joey Bart?
Do you really think we could trade for another catcher? or a far-fetched pipe dream?

Late Night LaMonte has an injured knee. Evan Longoria, the Giants' starting third baseman, will miss at least six weeks following finger surgery. Are the Giants completely doomed?
Actually, when Longoria missed more than two months last season, the Giants went 38-20 in his absence. This is a team built on depth, and Wilmer Flores is an underrated substitute at third base. His defense was surprisingly adequate last season (after a disastrous showing in 2020), and his bat more than held his own when Longoria went down. In the outfield, Wade's injury opens the door for Steven Duggar, who looked destined for another Triple-A assignment to begin 2022.
Trades and free-agent signings should remain in play as well. How about the Tampa Bay Rays' Vidal Bruján? He's an explosive athlete with electric speed, but only a contact oriented hitter who may not develop game-chaning power. So what? The Giants could absolutely use a player like that, and he's a bit blocked on the Rays' roster. Part of a deal could involve taking on the roughly $14.7 million owed to Kevin Kiermaier. Just a thought.

A San Francisco Giants offense that was already looking questionable is without two of its likely Opening Day starters. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Evan Longoria will start the season on the injured list. Where should the Giants go from here?
Neither injury looks to be extremely serious, with Longoria having a minor surgery on his right index finger that will lead to him immobilizing the finger for at least 10 days. Wade Jr. has swelling and a bone bruise in his knee, and he will be re-evaluated in 10 days. It's not like the Giants to make big, reactionary moves in a panic, so don't expect major changes because of these injuries. However, it's clear that the Giants' depth is already being stretched thin and the season hasn't even started. Michael Conforto is still a free agent, José Ramírez may be available in a trade, and there are several other options the Giants could turn to in order to fill these voids.
Also discussed is the announcement that Logan Webb will be the Giants' Opening Day starter. For Webb, he joins other homegrown starters such as Madison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum, and Matt Cain to get the Opening Day nod.

It's a make-or-break month for Mauricio Dubón and Tyler Beede. The San Francisco Giants have several out-of-options players who must perform, or risk being traded or designated for assignment.
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listners about the state of the SF Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:
How many of the fringe players without options will make the team? Any trades that you see with the ones that don’t make it, or do they just get DFA’d?
Thoughts on LaMonte Wade Jr. building off of last year? Or will he come back down to earth in 2022?
Why aren’t teams signing Michael Conforto? He’s coming off one bad year in which the underlying metrics still looked good. He should be willing to accept a short, prove it deal. At this point would you say the Giants are out on him given the Joc Pederson addition?
Should we be concerned about the lineup after not much additions during free agency, and the loss of Buster Posey, Kris Bryant, and Donovan Solano?

José Ramírez to the San Francisco Giants? It's a pipe dream for sure, but it may not be entirely unrealistic. Ramírez will be entering the last year of his deal with Cleveland in 2023, and if the Guardians don't believe they'll be able to extend him, history suggests they'll be looking to trade him. And that it might not even cost as much as you'd expect.
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:
Would there be a decent enough package without Marco Luciano, Luis Matos, and Kyle Harrison to pull off a José Ramírez trade?
With the off-season spending seemingly at an end, how would you rate the Giants? A+? B-?
I think I've had enough of the hot stove. On the current roster, which position player do you think is due for the biggest negative regression and the biggest (positive) surprise?
Any chance we try and trade for Trey Mancini maybe for package of Tyler Beede, Mauricio Dubón, etc. to bring a big right-handed bat to a mostly lefty lineup?
Thoughts on LaMonte Wade Jr. building off of last year or will he come back down to earth in 2022?
Let the YOUNG guys play! After the revolution of old players last season, do you think the team is led this year by the next generation of Giants stars? Heliot Ramos? Logan Webb? Joey Bart?

For an SF Giants team in need of more thump, why not Michael Conforto? Yes, he would add to an already crowded left-handed outfield mix, but the addition of the DH in the National League should make the fit possible.
LaMonte Wade Jr. could play left, Mike Yastrzemski could play center, and Conforto could play right against right-handed pitching. This would allow Joc Pederson so slide into the DH spot on most days against righties. Darin Ruf might not get his opportunity to be an everyday player right away, but is that really such a bad thing? He would be their top weapon off the bench every single night, and he would hit in the middle of the lineup every time they face a lefty.
Against lefties, Ruf could start in left, Austin Slater in center, and Conforto in right (as one of the Giants' few everyday players, along with Brandon Belt, Brandon Crawford, and Evan Longoria). ESPN predicted when the offseason began that Conforto would command a three-year, $51 million deal, which host Ben Kaspick thinks is extremely reasonable for a player of his caliber, particularly given that he's just 29 years old. Ben thinks a deal like that with multiple opt outs could make sense for both sides. A one-year deal is also a possibility at this point for Conforto, who has some questions about his vaccination status, which could be holding up his market. Teams in the AL East are wary of signing unvaccinated players, since they won't be allowed to travel to Toronto under current Canadian law.
One more consideration: Conforto rejected the qualifying offer from the Mets, meaning he would cost the Giants their second-highest draft pick in 2022 (roughly 65th overall). Ben thinks that shouldn't be prohibitive and that Conforto should still be a priority.

What if Joey Bart is a bust? The Giants lost a Hall-of-Fame catcher in Buster Posey, and they could crash and burn at the position if 2022 is anything like 2020.
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the San Francisco Giants' catching situation heading into the new year, with Bart and Curt Casali poised to get most of the playing time at the critical spot on the diamond. Although Bart is still considered a top prospect by many, there are significant concerns about whether he'll be able to reach his potential. Ben discusses potential alternatives for the Giants, including trades for catchers who could be on the market like the Cubs' Willson Contreras, and the Athletics' Sean Murphy. Contreras, Ben argues, makes the most sense. But it's hard to figure what the return would have to be (Contreras is only under club control for one more season) and where that would leave Bart, who would be understandably upset by such a move.
Also discussed on today's show is the fact that rosters will be expanded from 26 to 28 in April. This helps out-of-options players like Mauricio Dubón and Tyler Beede. Thairo Estrada has always seemed destined to make this team (he's out of options as well), but this expansion certainly doesn't hurt. He also recaps the Giants locking up all of their arbitration-eligible players, including Darin Ruf, Curt Casali, Dominic Leone, and Mike Yastrzemski.

Darin Ruf is going to keep mashing for the Giants for at least the next two seasons, and possibly a third. Mike Yastrzemski finally got what he deserved, $3.7 million, and is set up well to continue to earn for the next few years. A key deadline is passed, and Giants fans should be excited about what transpired today.
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses Ruf and Yastrzemski's new deals. He details how and why the deals came to fruition, and what these two inspirational players have meant to this team and fanbase. Both have great stories of perseverance that have endeared them to the fanbase.
Ben also discusses the Giants' second base situation, with Tommy La Stella rehabbing from offseason Achilles surgery. Thairo Estrada and Wilmer Flores are solid fill-ins, with Estrada being likely to get a real opportunity to prove himself this year. However, keep an eye on whether the Giants make another addition at the position to improve their depth. Ben lastly discusses last night's televised Spring Training game. Alex Wood was very impressive, as was Luis Matos' center field defense. Grant McCray and Will Toffey also stood out at the plate as they belted home runs.
