The Giants' offseason is likely over. Did they do enough to defend their National League West crown? Plenty of fans probably don't think so, and for good reason.
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick summarizes the Giants' offseason now that Trevor Story is off the board after signing with the Boston Red Sox. The Giants' pitching staff looks very strong, but their offense appears worse than last year after losing Buster Posey and Kris Bryant. Donovan Solano also departed for the Cincinnati Reds.
However, as Ben explains, the Giants' offense was not overly dependent on Posey and Bryant. In fact, their numbers without Bryant, Posey, and Solano in the lineup were not too much worse than their numbers with them. The Giants' strength was in their depth and ability to create favorable matchups on a consistent basis. That should continue in 2022, and addition Joc Pederson fits that mold extremely well. Still, Ben understands how this can be disappointing for fans.
He also looks at the Giants' attendance numbers, and how an average of only about 20,000 fans per night in 2021 (and zero in 2020) may be causing the Giants to spend less than anticipated. Compared to selling out every night, half capacity costs the Giants about $85 million per year, according to Forbes. That's more than they make from their television deal in a given year. Hopefully attendance numbers rebound in 2022 and spending can increase as well. If not, it's understandable for fans to be frustrated.

Are the Giants going to sign Trevor Story? MLB Network's Jon Heyman tweeted this morning that the Giants were among four finalists for Story, and that he was open to short-term position changes if necessary. This would seem to fit the Giants' needs, as Story's natural position, shortstop, is taken up by Brandon Crawford.
The Giants have an opening at second base, with Tommy La Stella rehabbing from offseason Achilles surgery. Story would presumably play second, and could fill in and shortstop and third base as needed. He could also potentially play the outfield, an area where the Giants do have some needs and openings. However, Giants president of baseball ops Farhan Zaidi said yesterday that the position player group is "pretty set" and that they didn't feel the need to add more pieces.
Also on today's show, Ben addresses mailbag questions. Among the questions asked and answered are:
Will Zaidi sign a free agent to a contract worth $100 million or more in the next three seasons?
Are the Giants ever going to make that big splash signing?
How does this lineup look against left-handed pitchers? I feel like it’s weak, yet they feel completely okay with what they have. They traded for a right-handed hitter last year because they needed one, and then lose Buster Posey.
Can the hitting coaches help get Joc Pederson back closer to pre-2020 numbers realistically (OPS+ above 100)?

The Giants are hoping for another Joctober. Joc Pederson has been an October baseball staple over the course of his career, and he joins the SF Giants on a one-year deal. Matthew Boyd, an intriguing depth signing for the rotation, also joins the team for 2023. However, the news of these two signings was overshadowed by the Dodgers acquiring yet another superstar in his prime, inking Freddie Freeman to a six-year deal last night.
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick talks about how Pederson and Boyd will fit the Giants, and why he understands fans' disappointment at the relatively small moves compared to the Dodgers' acquisition of Freeman. The Giants have spent money this offseason, but they've really spread it around and haven't made any commitments longer than three years. Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, and Brandon Belt were re-signed. Alex Cobb and Carlos Rodón were added to the rotation. Pederson joins the offense, and the likes of Boyd, Jakob Junis, and Carlos Martínez are depth signings for the rotation/bullpen.
Ben also discusses the official changes to the schedule to make up the six games that were lopped off from the beginning of the year. The Giants make up the games in some tough ways in Milwaukee, and now end the year on the road against the Padres. The Dodgers get the advantage of ending the season with six home games against the lowly Rockies, who, by the way, signed Kris Bryant to a seven-year, $182 million deal yesterday.

What's left for the San Francisco Giants? Seiya Suzuki and Kyle Schwarber signed new deals this morning, neither with the Giants. Suzuki ended up landing a five-year, $85 million deal from the Cubs ($100M with posting fees), and Schwarber got 4/$79 million from the Phillies. Where do the SF Giants go from here?
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick details the state of the free agent market. He analyzes the trends in the market so far: it's generally been inflated, with players signing for far more years and higher AAV's than predicted. He explores the remaining free agent market, and goes into detail on players like Tommy Pham, Joc Pederson, and Jorge Soler. He also reiterates that Michael Conforto, Kris Bryant, Nick Castellanos, and perhaps even Trevor Story continue to make sense for the Giants. Farhan Zaidi said yesterday that Tommy La Stella may miss the beginning of the season while rehabbing Achilles surgery, so the Giants are targeting a second baseman. There are lots of options on the free agent market, with varying degrees of talent available.
Finally, he explores the fantasy of the Giants signing Carlos Correa or Freddie Freeman. It's hard to see the fit for either player, but they're both special talents worth exploring.

Kris Bryant. Kyle Schwarber. Michael Conforto. Nick Castellanos. Trevor Story. Seiya Suzuki. The Giants seem poised to end up with at least one of these big-name bats—but which one?
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick breaks down each of the six remaining big-name hitters that could make sense for the San Francisco Giants. Bryant is indeed a big name, but Ben thinks his general decline is a major concern, especially when Bryant's contract is predicted to be in the 6-7 year range for over $20 million per season.
Schwarber and Conforto make a lot of sense for the Giants, for different reasons. Schwarber is coming off a monster offensive season that looks sustainable. However, he's not a great defender and may be best suited for DH duties. Is that worth a multi-year commitment for $15M+? Conforto is coming off a down year and is looking to rebuild value; the Giants may seize the opportunity to buy low on a player who has been well-above-average for several years prior to 2021 and is still just 29 years old.
Castellanos is an impact bat but questionable defender, and Ben thinks his tendency to chase out of the zone will be a turnoff for this front office. The same can be said about Story, who also has a tendency to swing aggressively, but he is an elite runner who could potentially play center field well if he's willing to change positions. An elbow injury, however, is a concern. Suzuki may be the real prize, given his very modeset predicted contract and the potential to be an impact bat. Ben thinks Suzuki, Schwarber and Conforto represent the best potential fits for the SF Giants.

Carlos Rodón, Carlos Martínez, and Jakob Junis are San Francisco Giants. When the lockout ended, the Giants' pitching staff looked solid, but lacked a front-line arm to pair with Logan Webb. Rodón fills that void, as he has the upside of a true ace. With a starting five seemingly in place, it was still a group that looked particularly vulnerable to potential injuries. Enter Martínez and Junis, who represent a nice secondary layer of depth. This is how the Giants built out their staff last season, and it worked exceptionally well.
Now that the starting staff looks well equipped, with Webb, Rodón, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, and Alex Cobb leading the group (a couple more additions may be necessary), the Giants can turn their attention to the position-player segment of the market. Several very good option remain: Carlos Correa, Freddie Freeman, Trevor Story, Seiya Suzuki, Nick Castellanos, Kyle Schwarber, Kris Bryant, Tommy Pham, and Michael Conforto among them. Ben thinks there's a pretty good chance at least one of those players is wearing an SF Giants uniform in 2022.
Finally, Ben looks at the Giants' under-the-radar pickup of José Godoy off waivers. Godoy becomes the Giants' third catcher on the 40-man roster, an important position to be in behind the unproven Joey Bart and veteran Curt Casali. If there's an injury or if Bart struggles, the Giants will need to rely on their next-in-line catchers, an area in which they were lacking after everyone moved up on the depth chart following Buster Posey's somewhat unexpected retirement.

The Giants just made a major move, signing LHP Carlos Rodón to a two-year, $44 million deal. Rodón joins breakout star Logan Webb at the top of the Giants' rotation, one that now looks to be among the best in the game -- assuming health.
Health is not something that can be assumed with the rest of the Giants' rotation, let alone Rodón. He has dealt with injuries throughout his career, including shoulder fatigue in 2021. Nevertheless, he has huge upside when he's on the field, as evidenced by his sensational ERA and strikeout rate last season, both of which ranked among the very best in the game.
With Rodón in the fold, the Giants are likely to turn their attention to adding a significant piece on offense. They'll need to continue to stockpile depth on the starting pitching front, but the heavy lifting is out of the way after the Giants re-signed Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood prior to the lockout, in addition to bringing in newcomer Alex Cobb on a two-year deal. Kevin Gausman, notably, departed on a five-year deal with the Blue Jays.

Are the Giants primed to be big spenders post-lockout? Larry Baer suggested that, at the very least, the Giants will be among the most aggressive teams as clubs try to finalize their rosters in anticipation of an Opening Day that is now just four weeks away.
With the MLB lockout finally ending yesterday after a grueling 99 days, the San Francisco Giants still have work to do in order to maximize their roster as they attempt to defend their NL West championship in a stunning 107-win 2021 campaign.
Locked On Giants podcast host Ben Kaspick discusses Baer's comments, in addition to those from SF Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi, who threw a bit of cold water on Baer's more exciting comments.

BASEBALL IS BACK! After 99 days of a grueling MLB lockout, the sport we love is officially back. Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association finally agreed to a deal on Thursday afternoon, ending the lockout and preserving a full 162-game season.
Ben details the final agreement, including the fact that it wasn't unanimously approved by players. In fact, the executive subcommittee voted 8-0 against it, but player-union reps voted overwhelmingly for accepting MLB's offer. Highlights of the deal include a 9.5% raise to the first CBT threshold, a new $50 million pre-arbitration bonus pool, a 22.7% raise to the league minimum salary, a new draft lottery, anti-service time manipulation measures, and more.
Now that an agreement is in place, the league is set to resume normal activities. Free agency is set to resume tonight after the owners officially vote to ratify the deal. Ben discusses the possible moves for the San Francisco Giants, including where things stand with Seiya Suzuki, Kris Bryant, Nick Castellanos, and others. Mandatory report date for Spring Training will be on Sunday, and Opening Day will be on April 7.

Is the MLB lockout nearing an end? The two sides have held secret meetings in the last few days, and there's some hope that a deal could be reached as soon as today.
On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the latest with the MLB lockout. The league has created another artificial deadline, stating that if a deal is not reached by the end of Tuesday, it will cancel another round of games. It has also said that Tuesday is the deadline for paying players for a full season, and giving them a full year of service time. The league can't unilaterally make those calls, but it can take those positions in negotiations. The players can and will demand full pay and full years of service no matter how many games are ultimately missed.
In its latest reported offer, the league has increased the first CBT threshold to $228 million, up $8 million from its last reported offer of $220 million. Importantly, the players have been asking for a $238 million threshold in Year 1 of a new CBA, so $228 million is the midpoint. Ben says that it's not hard to see the sides bridging the gap on this issue as soon as today, given that the starting point seems about right. Still, the owners are only proposing increasing the CBT by $10 million over the life of a five-year agreement, while the players want it to grow from $238 million to $263 million over the five years. There's still a ways to go for an agreement on this front, but it seems more feasible than ever. Ben also discusses the $50 million gap between the two sides on the new pre-arbitration bonus pool. The league wants it to start and end at $30 million; the players want it to start at $80 million and increase by $5 million a year. This may have just become a more significant obstacle than the CBT.
Finally, Ben continues his look across the NL West, today comparing the various lineups. He ranks the San Francisco Giants third, behind the Dodgers and Padres. The Dodgers continue to have a ridiculously talented roster, and Ben quite likes the top four in the Padres' order. However, he points out the the Giants have the depth to potentially over-perform projections and expectations again. He thinks that the holes left by Buster Posey's retirement and Kris Bryant's free agency are sizable enough to rank them third, but a big right-handed acquisition after the lockout ends could change the calculus.
