Locked On Giants – Daily Podcast On The San Francisco Giants

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick airs part three of his three-part conversation with Millard Thomas from Locked On D-backs, as the duo continue to discuss the San Francisco Giants' offseason to date. The conversation resumes with Ben and Millard discussing Kris Bryant's free agency, and whether he's likely to return to the Giants after they acquired him in a midseason trade.

Next, they discuss the free agencies of Freddie Freeman and Carlos Correa. Both agree that Freeman's likely to return to Atlanta, but Correa's fit is harder to pin down. Are the Giants a possible dark horse contender for Correa's services?

Finally, the two discuss any last under-the-radar options in free agency. Ben singles out Japanese star Seiya Suzuki and left-handed starter Carlos Rodón as possible fits for the Giants.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick airs part two of his conversation with Locked On D-backs host Millard Thomas, as the two continue to discuss the San Francisco Giants' offseason to date. The conversation resumes with Millard asking Ben whether the Giants should have signed Kevin Gausman to a five-year deal. Ben explains that it's complicated, and that he had hopes of the Giants bringing him back. However, Ben defends the state of the Giants' rotation as relatively strong, with Logan Webb emerging as an ace, Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood being brought back after strong first seasons in San Francisco, and Alex Cobb being a strong under-the-radar pickup. It's not a complete rotation, but it's a solid one that may be just one big piece away from greatness.

Next, Ben and Millard start to discuss the remaining Top 10 free agents from MLB Trade Rumors' Top 50 list. They discuss Nick Castellanos and his potential fits, as well as Trevor Story. Are either possible targets for the Giants? Listen to find out!

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick joins Locked On Diamondbacks host Millard Thomas to discuss the San Francisco Giants' offseason. Millard poses a shocking but thought-provoking question: Are the Giants having the worst offseason of any team in baseball? While Ben certainly does not agree, it's hard to argue with the fact that the Giants have lost some of their best players. Buster Posey retired. Kevin Gausman is a Blue Jay. Kris Bryant is a free agent.

While the Giants' rotation may have technically taken a step backward with Alex Cobb essentially replacing Gausman, Ben is happy with the front office's progress so far, bringing back Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood on multi-year deals, after both were quality contributors for San Francisco last year. Logan Webb broke out and emerged as a frontline starter, so overall it's a very solid-looking rotation at this moment in time. That being said, they need to do more. Ben thinks they need to add at least one more quality arm, and probably more.

On the position player side, Joey Bart is one of the top catching prospects in baseball, so there is some hope that the Giants have their catcher of the future on the doorstep of the majors. The Giants aren't likely to spend nine figures on anyone, reportedly, but there are several quality position players left who figure to command $50-99 million. Ben thinks the Giants have a lot of offseason left, and will ultimately field a team that will be competitive in 2022 without sacrificing future seasons.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:

Who in the pitching development pipeline is going to start the most games for the 2022 Giants? Tyler Beede? Sammy Long? Sean Hjelle? Someone else?

Do you think Darin Ruf could get regular/everyday playing time in left field next year?

Your personal wants/hopes to come out of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement?

To piggyback off some of the Carlos Correa questions, why don’t they just go after him? With a year left for Evan Longoria, I know Farhan Zaidi can get creative with a trade even if they have to eat a chunk of the salary. After losing Buster Posey and possibly Brandon Belt after next year, Correa becomes the CAPTAIN.

Do you think the Giants have moved off of Kris Bryant? It seems they may be willing to let someone else over pay.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses an ESPN report that had some interesting things to say about the San Francisco Giants. On the one hand, the Giants have tons of room to spend and are expected to spend it. On the other, ESPN's Kiley McDaniel reports that sources indicate the Giants aren't likely to be in on players commanding nine-figure deals.

Ben explores some possible middle-of-the-road solutions. He loves Carlos Rodón's upside, and believes he would be a perfect addition to the Giants. Alongside Logan Webb, Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Cobb, Rodón would give the Giants one of the best rotations in baseball—albeit one with considerable injury risk.

On the position player side, Ben is intrigued by Seiya Suzuki, Michael Conforto, Kyle Schwarber, Nick Castellanos, and Kris Bryant.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:

Are you surprised that the Giants haven’t been more aggressive during free agency? Mark Canha, Marcus Stroman, Jon Gray, and Corey Kluber all seemed like very good fits, and the Giants didn’t even seem to go after them.

With the need to add a right-handed power bat most likely in the outfield and the emergence of LaMonte Wade Jr. is it possible Mike Yastrzemski could be traded? It’s already a crowded outfield as it sits.

Is a trade the most practical bet for backfilling Kevin Gausman’s production with Oakland or Cincinnati? Seems like we need Nick Castellanos to fill the right-handed hole in the lineup and then some. Why not trade for Hunter Renfroe if he was on the market? Plus defender and bat.

What are the realistic options at catcher? Can Curt Casali provide enough production (especially defense) to start? Is Joey Bart worth more in a trade vs. a second chance as a starter? Would a Kris Bryant provide enough production to cover for low offensive production at catcher?

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick answers questions from listeners about the state of the San Francisco Giants. Among the questions asked and answered are:

Should the Giants be in on Carlos Correa? He is one of the only players that has all the traits that the Giants like since Bryce Harper (plate discipline, strikeout rate, defense, and power). He is willing to play 3rd base, and Evan Longoria's one year should not affect his free agent fit.

Why not Correa? He’s still young. He’s an impact bat that we need to replace Buster Posey. He’s a premium defender that has said he’s open to playing 3rd in the right situation. And, he’d be a great mentor for the young phenom, Marco Luciano. Makes sense to me

What is the likelihood they bring back Kris Bryant?

o this was the off-season we’ve all been waiting for from a spending standpoint. Obviously there’s a different direction. Where do you see Giants' payroll compared to the league during this new era.

Do you ever see the Giants making a big 10-year, $300M+ deal, and if so which player would that be in the future?

With so much payroll flexibility in the coming years and a rising farm system, when do you think we sign a cornerstone player in free agency? Which upcoming free agents stand out to you?

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francsico Giants' 40-man roster three-plus years into Farhan Zaidi's tenure as president of baseball operations. Only one player is still under a guaranteed contract that was inherited by Zaidi, and it's Evan Longoria. Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford were here when Zaidi took over, but both players were set to reach free agency after 2021, and were brought back in what represents a Zaidi decision.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the San Francisco Giants' 2022 ZiPS projections. Last season, the Giants outperformed their ZiPS projections more than any team had ever before. In Ben's opinion, the projection failed to take into account the influence of the Giants' new hitting coaches, Donnie Ecker, Justin Viele, and Dustin Lind, who demonstrated an ability to make players better in the short 2020 season.

This year, the projections still aren't fully buying the Giants' collective breakout. Brandon Crawford is projected to be good, but not great, and roughly league average offensively. Buster Posey, had he still been playing, would similarly be projected to be more average than great. Brandon Belt is projected to be an above-average hitter, but nothing like the monster he was in 2020 and 2021 when on the field. Ben also explores the projections for the likes of Joey Bart, LaMonte Wade Jr., Mike Yastrzemski, and Kris Bryant.

Lastly, he looks at some of the Giants' top pitchers. Logan Webb has an excellent projection, and it seems that the computers agree that Webb has arrived as a front-line starter. Alex Wood, Alex Cobb, and Anthony DeSclafani are projected to be solid second-tier starters behind an ace-like Webb, but the Giants are still missing at least one more trusted arm, it would seem.

On today's Locked On Giants podcast, host Ben Kaspick discusses the state of the San Francisco Giants outfield. This was a trouble spot in the last few years under the old regime, and it seemed that Farhan Zaidi had done a nice job of rejuvenating those three positions with the emergence of Mike Yastrzemski, Alex Dickerson, Austin Slater, and Darin Ruf. However, following down years from most of that group, Zaidi and the Giants may be in the hunt for an upgrade in the outfield again. Dickerson was DFA'd recently. Thankfully, LaMonte Wade Jr.'s emergence helped offset the poorer performance from other outfielders. Ben also looks at third base, where Evan Longoria is a borderline platoon candidate thanks to his continued struggles against same-handed pitching.
