Locked On Islanders - Daily Podcast On The New York Islanders

We knew this was coming but now it actually happened: New York Islanders forward Anthony Duclair cut his hair and facial hair in anticipation of training camp. The good news is this means camp is rapidly approaching. But is Lou Lamoriello's no long hair and no facial hair rule good or bad for the team? We discuss that on today's show.

The Isles were rumored to be interested in Rutger McGroarty a top prospect of the Winnipeg Jets who demanded a trade. Well, he's now a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Isles may see more of McGroarty than they'd like. We discuss why it was difficult or nearly impossible for the Isles to acquire him.

And we discuss the importance of the upcoming season for Kyle MacLean as he starts his first full NHL season.

All this and more on today's Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

The New York Islanders have released an updated roster that likely reflects what the team will look like when training camp opens in a few weeks. We break down the roster, discuss the surprises on it and something the Islanders are still not doing that is not helping some key prospects to develop.

Plus, we break down the Patrik Laine trade and discuss why after the fact, it was nearly impossible for the Islanders to be in on Laine or to add a similar, offensive talent because of the where this team is under the cap courtesy of Lou Lamoriello.

And, we have some exciting potential news about Thomas Hickey who may have a big opportunity in broadcasting that shouldn't keep him from staying on the Islanders MSG Network broadcasts.

The national media rarely gives the New York Islanders much respect and that continued this week. NHL Network released their list of the top 20 wings in the league and guess who wasn't on it: Mathew Barzal. We discuss whether Barzy belongs on this list, who made it and some potential reasons why Barzal was left off the list by the voters.

Plus, we discuss Anders Lee's comments on Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck's likely departure from the Island and some comments he made about Patrick Roy and the start of training camp.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are stripping former New York Islanders captain John Tavares of the captaincy in Toronto. There are rumors that Tavares could be traded after losing the "C" and that he wouldn't cost that much to acquire.

We discuss where Tavares is at this stage of his career and why it would not make much sense for the Islanders to bring him back to Long Island even if he could help the Isles offensively in the very short term.

Plus, now that the Identity Line is most likely broken up, what will the Isles identity as a team be this season under Patrick Roy? we will discuss some possibilities.

Bo Horvat and Mathew Barzal both had great years for the New York Islanders last season but can the duo be even better in their second full campaign together? We break down some reasons that could happen and discuss just how good they can become.

Plus, what should Isles GM Lou Lamoriello do about a potential extension for Kyle Palmieri? Lou said it wasn't his top priority, but I'll explain why it's best to wait with Palms rather than rush into signing an extension with him.

And we discuss two players who could really help improve the Isles power play this coming season.

With training camp about a month away, the New York Islanders have yet to sign Matt Martin or Cal Clutterbuck. That means the team's Identity Line will be broken up this season. We discuss the legacy of Casey Cizikas, Martin and Clutterbuck, what they provided for the Islanders over the last decade and what made them so special.

Plus, we look ahead to the options Patrick Roy has to fill in his fourth line this year and the benefits and potential issues with using Hudson Fasching or Simon Holmstrom or Anders Lee or other players on that fourth line.

And we discuss what Hockey Hall of Famer and former Islanders star Pierre Turgeon had to say about Patrick Roy and his potential impact on the Isles this year.

Plus, when and how can the Isles get out of the NHL's "muddy middle?" We have some ideas and plans for the best way for the team to do that.

And what can the Isles expect from Maxim Tsyplakov in his first season with the team and how quickly will he adjust to the NHL game as opposed to the KHL style of play?

With both Matt Martin and Cal Clutterbuck still unsigned and unlikely to be back, who will step up and be the new enforcer/protector for the New York Islanders next season? We break down who dropped the gloves last season and who on the current roster is most likely to step up and assume that role and why they may not. It's also possible Lou Lamoriello signs a new player to fill that role but again, somebody would have to be moved out to add a new player to the roster.

We also discuss the latest on Cole Eiserman and Jesse Nurmi at the World Juniors Summer Showcase and how Anders Lee and Mike Reilly are playing in Da Beauty League.

And some good news about Brendan Burtke and the Isles broadcast booth.
