Locked On Islanders - Daily Podcast On The New York Islanders

The New York Islanders signed pending restricted free agent Kyle MacLean to a new, three-year contract extension with a $775,000 cap hit. This crosses one thing off GM Lou Lamoriello's to-do list as we get closer to the NHL Draft and free agency. We explain why this was a good move by Lou and how MacLean fits into the team's plans for 2024-25.

We also continue our profile of players the Isles could select with the 20th overall pick in the draft with center Cole Beaudoin, We break down his strengths and weaknesses and  discuss why he would be a good fit for the Islanders organization.

And we continue our player by player look at the Isles season with Grant Hutton  and Ken Appleby, two players who spent most of the season in Bridgeport but who played a handful of games with the big club. Do either of them fit into the team's plans going forward?

And we have a four-time Stanley Cup winner as our Islanders birthday of the day, a player who may have been the biggest trade steal ever by Bill Torrey.

All this and more on today's Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

The New York Islanders are interested in acquiring Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers according to several sources. Ehlers would be a solid addition to the Isles top line alonside Bo Horvat and  Mathew Barzal but what would it cost to get him and can the Isles afford it? This does seem like a very Lou Lamoriello type move.

Plus, Cal Clutterbuck has won the 2014 Bob Nystrom Award as voted by the fans. We discuss by Clutter deserves the honor  and whether he'll be back next season.

And we continue our player by player look at the Islanders with Casey Cizikas who started the season on the 4th line and ended up on the first line, showcasing his versatility.

The Carolina Hurricanes announced they were looking for a mid-round pick for the negotiating rights to Jake Guentzel but the New York Islanders probably can't afford to sign Guentzel even if they get his rights. One player who could help the Isles offense without breaking the bank is Tyler Toffoli. We discuss what he would cost as a free agent and where he could fit on the Isles.

Plus, the Islanders will also need to consider adding a penalty killer to the lineup for next season especially if they move on from J.G. Pageau and/or if Cal Clutterbuck and Matt Martin don't return. We discuss some players who could help the team and not cost too much money.

And we review Kyle MacLean's season and future role on the Islanders plus we discuss the one thing he needs to improve in his game to truly become a reliable, full-time NHL player.
