Locked On Jets - Daily Podcast On The New York Jets

It was a big weekend for the Jets. The team made a bold move that changed the complexion of the 2018 NFL Draft. For the price of the sixth overall pick and three second round selections over the next two seasons, the Jets struck a deal with the Indianapolis Colts to acquire the third overall pick in the upcoming Draft.

Owning a top three pick, the Jets now look extremely likely to take a quarterback in the hopes of finding a long-term solution at the most important position on the field for the first time in a very long time.

That is the topic of today's podcast. After we address some of the minor news of the weekend, we look at the trade. Was it the right move? Was the value good? What about the timing of the deal? There are a lot of different aspects to discuss.

The 2018 offseason continues to be active for the Jets. The team made more additions on Thursday. Cornerback Morris Claiborne was brought back into the fold on a one year deal. In addition, the team found a new kicker in Cairo Santos. We also got details about Spencer Long's contract.

On the negative side, the Jets lost another free agent. Austin Seferian-Jenkins signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Strikingly, the terms of the contract were not that different from what the Jets had reportedly offered him over the last few weeks.

On today's podcast we close out the week by looking at the developments from a busy offseason Thursday for the Jets. Since we decided to skip yesterday's mailbag Thursday, we throw in a few of your questions near the end of the show.

Today is Mailbag Thursday on the podcast. Thanks to those who submitted questions. We could not have done the show without you. Apologies to those whose questions we could not get to today. Feel free to ask them next week.

On today's show we look at whether the Jets might bring in two free agents to compete as an alternative to Kirk Cousins, whether a drafted quarterback would have the luxury of sitting a full year, how much time Mike Maccagnan has to find a quarterback, which running backs might be worth our attention in the NFL Draft, which wide receivers might interest the Jets, what a difference-making quarterback is, and whether the JEts should have interest in Richard Sherman.

The NFL has set the salary cap for the 2018 league year. Teams had been able to estimate approximately how much cap space they would enter free agency with, but now they know for sure.

The Jets knew their room would be vast. It is around $90 million. The lessons of offseasons past have taught us that having cap space doesn't guarantee anything. The money has to be spent smartly. In some ways even having that much room under the cap can be a negative if it is a sign the team lacks talent. It is one thing to have a good team and cap flexibility. It is another to be swimming in cap space because no players on the roster are worth long-term contracts.

On today's podcast we take a look at the Jets' current cap situation and why the Jets need to enter free agency with some degree of caution. Mike Maccagnan should have learned a lesson three years ago about understanding the risks that come with big spending. Whether he has is something we will figure out over the weeks ahead. Building this roster into a legitimate contender is likely a multi-year process. This year's free agency is simply a first step.
