On the one hand, the Lakers definitely played a better game Friday in Atlanta. They got some buckets, showed some energy and generally speaking put in a professional effort. LeBron James and Anthony Davis were both excellent, and some supporting players stepped up as well.
This should be the standard, of course, but anyone who has watched the Lakers of late knows it's not one they've consistently met.
And in the end, the Lakers still lost, 134-132 in overtime.
This one will leave a mark, not simply because the Lakers wasted nearly 80 points between Davis and James, but because they truly dug their own graves in this game. The late game execution, a relatively persistent problem for this team throughout the season, was absolutely catastrophic in Atlanta. A death by 1,000 cuts (compacted into a few minutes of basketball). Silly fouls, missed screens, confused coverages and so on.
And in the end, that's what did them in.
So yeah, it was a better game than what happened in Miami... but for most fans, likely more frustrating. A missed opportunity to change the vibes around the group, for sure.

Trae Young hit a game-winning three-pointer in overtime, scoring 31 points and adding 20 assists as the Hawks outlasted the Lakers in overtime, 134-132. LeBron James recorded a triple-double with 39 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 10 assists, and Anthony Davis contributed 38, but it wasn’t enough as the Lakers closed out their 4-game road trip with a 1-3 record.

The Lakers have some serious problems right now. LeBron James, rather uncharacteristically, is one of them.
His play over the last 10 days or so has not been good. Not in a "by LeBron James standards" kind of way, either. The shot has been off, the turnovers are up, the defense has been... lacking. But to this point, at least, LeBron's health hasn't been an issue. His age? His energy? Yes to both. But LeBron hasn't been on the injury report.
That changes tonight as the Lakers take on the Hawks in Atlanta. James is on the injury report, downgraded to questionable with foot/ankle issues. This isn't a new problem, and ironically it comes after LeBron had one of his better offensive games in a while against Miami on Wednesday. But it's also in the wake of both James and JJ Redick publicly seeming to reconsider LeBron's stated goal of playing in all 82 regular season games.
Could this be the beginning of a shift in how the Lakers approach LeBron's usage?
Were James to miss tonight's game, and follow that up with some additional rest on Sunday at home against Portland, he'd be able to get a level of rest over the next two weeks almost unheard of in the NBA. After they see the Blazers, the Lakers don't play again until December 13 against Minnesota. Following that with a game on the 15th vs. Memphis, the Lakers are then off until visiting Sacramento on the 19th. So if some version of getting rest for James ahead of the break, whether both games or just one, isn't the plan, should it be?
The Lakers have to figure out what LeBron's capabilities are, and how they can be maximized. Because while they ought to be built with enough depth to support him through the long regular season so that he can be LeBron down the stretch, they aren't. The LeBron of the last couple of weeks isn't going to be nearly good enough for the Lakers to make any noise, even if Austin Reaves (out again tonight) comes back soon. Especially while Jarred Vanderbilt, Jaxson Hayes and Christian Wood are out. (And two of the three likely out a while.)
Are there combinations the Lakers could deploy to fix this? Would removing LeBron for a couple days break the cycle the Lakers seem to be in right now where James has a much larger usage within the offense than he did earlier in the year?
These next two weeks, whether you're talking about the games they have to play or the rest they need to find or the adjustments they need to make, will potentially define the remainder of the season.

It went from bad to worse for the Lakers.
Outscored by 29 Monday in Minnesota, the purple and gold followed that up on Wednesday with a 41-point loss in Miami. And if we're all being honest, the game didn't seem as close as the score might indicate.
Miami was basically working against warm up levels of defensive resistance all night. It might seem like they caught lightning in a bottle to hit a scorching 24-47 from beyond the arc, but these are professionals. About 35-40 of those hoists were, if not totally uncontested, so mildly contested that it didn't really matter. NBA players, left to shoot open 3-pointers in rhythm, are going to make more than they miss.
The Lakers played like they were unsure if they were allowed to even cross the 3-point line in order to contest some of these looks. The level of compete, as JJ Redick likes to talk about, was so low you wonder if the (metaphorical) tools designed measure it could even detect something. There is a certain level of effort and commitment to detail that an NBA must hit if they want to avoid... 41 point losses. The Lakers weren't anywhere close.
And after the game, JJ Redick called it "embarrassing." LeBron James and Anthony Davis used the same word.
But the thing is, they didn't play like they were embarrassed. They just kinda went through the motions, like a balloon with all the air sucked out. "Embarrassing" is a good word for this game, and for the performance of Davis (3-14 in 31 minutes). We noted after the Monday's loss that the Lakers simply aren't built to win when Davis doesn't produce on one end or the other (and preferably both).
We'll see how they respond. The only good news of the day: With the Lakers out of NBA Cup contention, they'll have a stretch coming after the weekend where they play twice in 10 days.
They'll need to simultaneously use that time to heal, but also to practice and learn. It's a lot, but then again, the Lakers have a whole lot to address.
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: OMG, the Lakers got crushed in Miami.
SEGMENT 2: What's going wrong defensively?

Tyler Herro caught fire in the 3rd quarter as he scored 21 points on seven made three-pointers as the Miami Heat crushed the visiting Los Angeles Lakers 134-93. Herro led the Heat with a total of 31 points with nine made three-pointers, while LeBron James was the lone bright spot in his return to Miami, scoring 29 points to go along with 8 assists. The Lakers will look to get back on the winning side of things Friday when they visit the Atlanta Hawks.

The news on Jarred Vanderbilt keeps getting worse.
The Lakers revealed Tuesday (via Shams and Dave McMenamin at ESPN) that Vanderbilt, who is yet to play this season, has suffered a setback in his rehab. Not with the surgically repaired feet that have kept him out to this point, but because of fluid buildup on his left knee. So they'll have to slow down his activity, and he's now targeting early January for a return.
Sure, why not, but the Lakers shouldn't treat this target as any more definitive than the other targets he/they have had to this point.
Really, they should behave it as if Vanderbilt isn't going to play this season. If he does, great. Realistically, though, they should be forming plans as if he won't. Because even if Vanderbilt does come back, he won't have played for over a year. Huge chunks of two seasons. The idea Vando could come back and be the best version of himself is unrealistic. And since he's a guy who is most successful relying on activity and athleticism, that's even more reason to assume he'll need time to feel comfortable and round into form. It's certainly not fair for anyone to expect him to just waltz into the lineup and defend at a high level.
If there's a part of the Shams/McMenamin report that should feel particularly annoying, it's this: "Beyond bolstering the defense by being called on to guard opponents' top perimeter players, Vanderbilt's absence has prevented new coach JJ Redick from figuring out his ideal rotation. His absence has also prevented the Lakers' front office from fully evaluating the needs of its roster as trade season approaches."
Really?
Seems that "fully" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Yes, in the most literal terms his absence has prevented the front office from fully evaluating the needs of its roster as trade season approaches. But it's pretty clear where the team's weaknesses are. It's pretty clear who identify the names that feel available right now, and maybe who will become available as the season goes on. That's not to say Rob Pelinka could go out and make a couple big trades. The Lakers are definitely hamstrung by a variety of circumstances, only some of their own making. But the notion that 20+ games in, Pelinka doesn't have a good idea of what his team needs? Or could really use?
Even if the path forward isn't laid out meticulously, in bright swaths of total obviousness, the needs (wing defense, backup big, potentially another ball handler, pending D'Angelo Russell's future in the market). None of that really changes even if Vanderbilt comes back, eventually. Which ultimately makes it feel like Pelinka is setting the stage again to do nothing at the deadline or whenever.
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: Vanderbilt has a setback, and is out until January.
SEGMENT 2: ...at least.
SEGMENT 3: Where do the Lakers go from here?

It was always going to be a tough slog for the Lakers coming into Minnesota after grinding out a win Sunday night in Utah against the Jazz. LA arrived still shorthanded (no Austin Reaves) and definitely weary, having played approximately 17 games in the last week.
But even with all of that, the Lakers simply looked lifeless after the first 12 minutes, posting a gruesome 80 points in a 29-point loss to the Wolves. (109-80, for those who don't want to do the math.) The core of the problem was fatigue—which is both an issue for the near and long term—and a catastrophically unproductive night from Anthony Davis and LeBron James, who scored 22 points between them. On a team that isn't constructed in a way that demands its stars dominate nightly, that's tough to overcome. On the Lakers, it's damn near impossible. D'Angelo Russell, stepping into the starting lineup for Reaves, did his part (20 points, leading the team) but the rest of the gang?
Ooof. It was a second straight rough outing for Dalton Knecht. Max Christie was 2-9. The Lakers needed another hero or two, and needless to say didn't get any.
But the big question is LeBron. After the game, JJ Redick said it may not be in his or the team's interest for James to follow through on his stated desire to play in all 82 games this season, admirable as the impulse might be. The Lakers need to figure out a way to get the most out of James, who may not be bending the knee to Father Time—it wasn't that long ago we were celebrating four straight triple-doubles—but does seem to be feeling the wear of stretches in the schedule where the games come fast and frequent, and a team that doesn't have the sort of high-end depth to support him effectively.
21 games in, maybe James works through the wall and comes out the other side. But the Lakers need to start planning on how to manage him more, and James himself needs to open himself to the idea.
What we're seeing now, where James has (by far) the lowest net rating among rotation players over the last 10 games, is not sustainable.
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are lifeless in Minnesota.
SEGMENT 2: LeBron and danger signs.
SEGMENT 3: How can the Lakers handle James going forward?

The Lakers were in Minnesota playing the second game of back-to-back road games and, as expected in the NBA, they struggled to keep up with the very young and athletic Minnesota Timberwolves, losing by a score of 109-80. LeBron James scored a season-low 10 points on 4 of 16 shooting, while Anthony Davis made just 4 of 14 shots, totaling 12 points. The Lakers will look to get back on the winning side of things Wednesday night in Miami.

The Lakers came into Sunday's game in Utah a weary team, and beyond their normal slate of injuries (Christian Wood, Jarred Vanderbilt, Jaxson Hayes) they added D'Angelo Russell (illness), Cam Reddish (also sick) and Austin Reaves (pelvic contusion suffered in his fall Friday vs. OKC).
Circumstances, then, transformed the game from, with a little focus and solid play, to get a win and some rest ahead of tonight's game against the Wolves in Minnesota to one perhaps channeling the late Al Davis: Just win, baby. And while it wasn't exactly a work of art, the Lakers got it done. They needed a star performance from Anthony Davis (33 points, 11 rebounds) and a nice bounceback from LeBron James (27 points, 13 dimes, only three turnovers), but they got it done, hanging on to win by a point, 105-104.
Without two of their three rotation guards, it's not surprising the offense got stuck in the mud, and the Lakers (said JJ Redick) were basically forced to lean unusually hard into LeBron pick-and-rolls as the game went on. By the fourth quarter, that's about all they were running. And, whether through one more bucket or one more stop, the Lakers couldn't execute at a high enough level to keep it from coming down to a final possession. They were aided by a coaching gaffe from Jazz coach Will Hardy. All true.
But this was a game they had to have, facing a back-to-back tonight, their fifth game in seven days. And playing shorthanded, the Lakers were able to get good contributions from Gabe Vincent (10 points, his high with the Lakers) and meaningful minutes from Jalen Hood-Schifino and Armel Traoire. Max Christie continues to quietly round into the form LA was hoping for when they gave him an extension this summer.
Doesn't mean they've figured it all out, but given the choice between accentuating the positive or noting the negative following the game, JJ Redick went with the former. And it makes sense. Contextually, this game was tricky. It demanded some perseverance and adaptability. And it was enough. Barely, but enough, nonetheless.
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: The Lakers squeak past Utah, 105-104.
SEGMENT 2: Contributions from the stars...
SEGMENT 3: ...Contributions from more surprising sources.
