The preseason is over, and in 24 hours or so, the regular season begins.
Did the Lakers get everything they needed out of training camp? Are they in position to maximize the talent on hand in the face of a very, very challenging early slate of games? (And let's be honest, in the Western Conference, there are no easy stretches.) The Lakers were mostly healthy through the preseason, with guys missing a little time here and there with normal training camp caution. But they didn't get Jarred Vanderbilt on the floor, and probably won't for a little bit longer. Christian Wood is still out.
So based on what's been seen, what looks good?
What looks concerning?
Is Dalton Knecht ready to contribute? Do the Lakers have enough depth. Is the shooting going to straighten itself out, after a very, very poor percentage from 3-point range during the preseason?
Any signs of what this squad under JJ Redick is going to look like now that the real games are here?
Are LeBron James and Anthony Davis ready to pick up where they left off last year, or even get a little better (talking about Anthony Davis, specifically)?
Meanwhile, the Lakers did make a roster move to finish off the preseason, waiving center Colin Castleton, who never really made much progress after the Lakers brought him in last year, and gave that two-way contract to Quincy Olivari, who impressed in a big way (obviously) in a pair of big preseason performances. First things first - it's a great story. For a guy to take advantage of this type of opportunity in the way Olivari did is cool to see. But it also does say a couple things about the fringey elements of the roster, namely the confidence the Lakers have in Christian Koloko to be be cleared for play sooner rather than later (because LA is short on and Castleton is, if nothing else, a center. And while Olivari and Jalen Hood-Schifino don't play the same position, keeping Olivari can't be seen as a ringing endorsement of JHS's ability to play minutes if needed.
After a strong opening game to the preseason, that's not a good trend for the second year player.
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: The Lakers finished the preseason. What stood out?
SEGMENT 2: What looks good? What is concerning?
SEGMENT 3: The Lakers keep Quincy Olivari.

Thursday's penultimate preseason game against the Suns had a very preseason vibe. Players playing hard, but a few guys missing and a lot of weird lineups on the floor for both teams.
From LA's standpoint, a few things stuck out:
-LeBron James missed the game (DNP-Old, said JJ Redick), and won't play Friday in the finale, either. That'll give him a full week of rest before Tuesday's opener.
-Anthony Davis did play (likely won't play Friday) and again was excellent, with 35 points on 14-28 from the floor, plus 10 rebounds and four assists. He opened the game on a jump shot heater, hitting three straight including a pair of threes. He's carrying MVP form into the regular season.
-Dalton Knecht again came alive late, hitting a triple over Bol Bol to push the game into overtime, then providing the team's offense in the extra session. Three triples, and and-one plus an old-fashioned trip to the FT line. Finished with 35 points. Developing some confidence is important for him, because...
-Jarred Vanderbilt is going to be out for at least two more weeks. At that point, the team will take another look and see where things are. No real surprise that he'll miss the opener, officially, but still significant.
-That opens up potential time for Cam Reddish, who gave the Lakers good minutes including a lot of energy. He was working hard on the boards, and showed his typical athleticism. With Vando out, it'll either be him or Knecht in the rotation early. Reddish had seemed to be the odd man out, but did himself some favors on Thursday.
-Oh, the Lakers won the game.
We'll see what happens Friday, but it looks like the Lakers have the cast of characters now that they'll have for a couple weeks at least. No Vando, no Christian Wood. Everyone else good to go.
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: Lakers win as Knecht goes off.
SEGMENT 2: No Vando, so did Knecht earn the 9th spot, or did Reddish make a sneaky play for it?
SEGMENT 3: LeBron done for the preseason.

The Lakers didn't look great in Tuesday's loss to the Warriors in Las Vegas. They get two more cracks at it before the real games begin next week.
But while there were some highlights (Anthony Davis! Rui Hachimura's rebounding!) there were also some real issues. Among the most notable is defense. The Lakers really struggled. Some of it is a matter of learning a new defensive system, and a coach in JJ Redick who doesn't want the same stuff as Darvin Ham did. But it's also related to personnel, and while the Lakers have Gabe Vincent back, and are playing Max Christie - two upgrades to the defense - they're still short Jarred Vanderbilt, and the results show.
The team has said they're still thinking Vando could be back for the beginning of the season. Again, next week. Tuesday. But they play today and tomorrow, and likely won't practice again until Sunday. That's not a lot of time for Vanderbilt to get his "ramp up" to somewhere that screams "put me in, coach, I'm ready to play."
Will it be a game he misses? Two? Five? Hopefully not too much, because the Lakers badly need his presence in the lineup to reach their defensive ceiling.
Meanwhile, if it's almost the regular season, it's time for big basketball websites to start ranking players! ESPN has theirs, as does The Ringer. The issue isn't really about debating whether AD is say, 13 (ESPN) or nine (The Ringer), or if LeBron is somewhere in the top 10 (coming today, presumably) or 10 on the dot (The Ringer). What's more interesting is where the rest of the players on the roster land relative to the top 100... and for the most part they don't. What does that mean about the talent level on the team?
And for the guy that does—Austin Reaves—what does it say about how well he'll need to play for the Lakers to hit their ceiling?
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: Get well, Jarred Vanderbilt!
SEGMENT 2: NBA player rankings - LeBron and AD are still really high. What about the other guys?
SEGMENT 3: The Lakers need more from Austin Reaves.

There was plenty of stuff to like in Tuesday's preseason loss to the Warriors in Las Vegas.
Start with Anthony Davis, who flat out dominated in 26 minutes of play with 24 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, plus a steal and a block. He was 10-14 from the floor. He hit from the basket working in the post, he finished on the pick and roll, he hit jumpers. It was all there. In fact, take away Davis's stat line, and the Lakers were a putrid 24-81 on the night. That is, to say the least, abominable. So it just goes to show how good Davis was, because nobody around him was getting it done.
Meanwhile, that shooting thing has been a problem all preseason. The Lakers, who were a low volume, high success 3-point team last year, are trying to keep the success and raise the volume. Thus far, it hasn't worked. Tuesday, they were 11-40. Redick likes the 40, but it's clearly going to take a little time before the Lakers are fully comfortable tilting the offense to find seven or eight more 3's a night. So far, there's a lid on the basket.
On the bright side, the Rui Hachimura Preseason of Rebounding continued Tuesday. Rui snagged nine boards, another in a string of good rebounding games for the perpetually under-rebounding forward. If this held into the season, it would make a significant difference for the Lakers.
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose in Vegas to the Warriors, but Anthony Davis shines.
SEGMENT 2: Are the Lakers taking too many 3's?
SEGMENT 3: Rui Hachimura's rebounding continues to be a positive this preseason.

The Lakers enter tonight's game against the Warriors in Vegas halfway through their preseason slate. The regular season starts in a week.
So with that in mind, the sense of urgency the team has displayed through this preseason (decidedly missing a year ago) is front and center as the Lakers try to get as much installed on both sides of the ball before the real games begin and practice becomes harder to come by. JJ Redick spoke with the media in El Segundo Monday about that process, and where he thinks the Lakers stand.
It's interesting to think about what realistic targets are, in terms of how the Lakers stack up statistically. The general consensus is any team with championship aspirations needs to be in the top 10 of both O and D to have a chance. Can the lakers do that? Would 10-15 on D (with the possibility of another gear once LeBron commits to playoff level defense) and a top 5 offense be enough?
One thing many fans believe would help (and in this the team agrees, at least based on reported action) is another large body. A true center, both to play with Anthony Davis but also to take up space and help anchor the reserves. One new(ish) name popping up - Charlotte's Nick Richards. Good idea or not?
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: Redick on the O and the D.
SEGMENT 2: How good can the Lakers be defensively?
SEGMENT 3: Is Nick Richards a good idea?

The Lakers had a few notable deficiencies last season. One, to be sure, was health.
On that front, could things be improving? Austin Reaves missed Thursday's game in Milwaukee, but is considered day-to-day and nobody seems all that concerned. Meanwhile, while the language wasn't exactly definitive, the bottom line on Jarred Vanderbilt is that the Lakers are still optimistic he'll be available when the season starts. (If "when" becomes "pretty close to," that's not a bad result, either.)
Another big issue: Focus. Rui Hachimura admitted the Lakers spent 30-40 games last year kind of screwing around. Does that mean a lack of focus? Does that mean screwing around, as in doing dumb things asked of them by the coaching staff? Perhaps a little of the later leads to some of the former? Either way, Rui says they're aware, and don't plan to repeat it. Helps explain what seems like an elevated level of focus and urgency this preseason vs. last.
And then there's rebounding. It was an issue all year for the Lakers. Extra possessions (meaning offensive rebounds, in part) was a big emphasis for JJ Redick. Well, the Lakers are making some progress there -- Dalton Knecht had six of them in Thursday's game. On the other side, Hachimura, not exactly known for his rebounding, had eight of his own. It's an area the Lakers have to find some improvement if they want to reach their potential ceiling.
Speaking of Knecht, how likely is he to make an impact as a rookie?
HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky
SEGMENT 1: The Lakers are kinda healthy?
SEGMENT 2: Are they taking things more seriously?
SEGMENT 3: Rebounding. Rebounding, rebounding, rebounding...
