Locked On Panthers - Daily Podcast On The Carolina Panthers

The Countdown to Training Camp continues as the Carolina Panthers are five days away from reporting to camp at Wofford College. Will there be any big news before they do? Brian Burns is still without a long-term deal and rookie quarterback Bryce Young hasn't come to terms on his rookie deal. Will each sign prior to the start of camp?

Charlotte Observer Panthers beat reporter Mike Kaye joined Julian Council to discuss the pending contracts, and expectations for Young heading into camp, along with several other headlines as the 2023 NFL season begins in earnest.

As the Carolina Panthers prepare to head down to Training Camp in Spartanburg, SC, there remains one final box to check on the offseason to-do list: sign Brian Burns to a long-term deal. The Panthers and Burns have both stated their intentions but so far have not agreed to a deal. According to Darin Gantt on Panthers.com, an offer has been made to Burns. At what point should Panthers fans become concerned about a lack of a new deal for Burns? Julian Council answers.

On the final day of June, the Panthers added veteran defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth. Stallworth's addition sets up an intriguing training camp battle on the interior of the Panthers defensive line.

Free agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins opted to sign with the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Julian discusses what the Panthers lack of interest in Hopkins signals about their feelings about their WR room.

Over the past few seasons, the Carolina Panthers have cycled through a handful of placekickers. But after a perfect finish to the end of the 2022 regular season, the team appears to have found a long-term option in Eddy Pineiro. Pineiro won the job based on the way he responded to a forgettable afternoon in Atlanta as the Panthers traded oft-injured kicker Zane Gonzalez after rewarding Pineiro with a new deal. Can Pineiro reward the Panthers faith in him with another strong season in 2023?

While the NFL rule changes call into question the importance of having a strong return game in the NFL, the Panthers are still in search of a difference-maker at the position. Which players can solidify their spots on the 53-man roster by way of the return game?

How big of an impact will the Panthers special teams unit have on the upcoming season?

After an injury-plagued 2022, Jeremy Chinn is back healthy for the Carolina Panthers heading into 2022. Chinn enters the final year of his rookie contract in a new role as defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero will look to utilize Chinn as more of a "playmaker" with the addition of Vonn Bell in the safety room. Will the Panthers see the best version of Chinn in 2023?

The Panthers find themselves with a deep safety room as Chinn, Bell, and Xavier Woods are all quality starters while rookie Jammie Robinson and special teams ace Sam Franklin present quality backup options. Considering the depth and the expectation that Chinn won't spend the majority of time at safety, how often should fans expect to see him in the secondary?

There's an argument to be made that had either Donte Jackson or Jaycee Horn been healthy during the Carolina Panthers Week 17 matchup at Tampa Bay, the Panthers would've been NFC South champions. On that day, Tom Brady and Mike Evans exposed the Panthers lack of quality depth at corner as CJ Henderson and Keith Taylor struggled mightily. The two were thrust into duty as for the second straight season, Jackson and Horn suffered season-ending injuries. Can the two play a full and healthy 2023 regular season?

In the event that Jackson and/or Horn miss time again in 2023, do the Panthers have enough depth? Should the Panthers add a veteran cornerback to the roster? Can Henderson and Taylor improve under the new coaching staff?

Shaq Thompson is back for another year in Carolina. Entering the offseason there was a question whether Thompson would be back under Frank Reich's coaching staff. Thompson had a prohibitive cap number that would've made him an easy cap casualty. Instead of making that move, the Panthers worked out a new deal for their defensive captain, ensuring that he'd be in Carolina for another two seasons. Is Thompson the most important piece to the Panthers defense?

Frankie Luvu went from a core special teamer to one of the Panthers top defensive players in 2022. In his first year as a starter, Luvu totaled 111 tackles and a team-high 19 tackles for loss. How much better can Luvu get in the new 3-4 scheme?

Can Brandon Smith make more of an impact in his second season in Carolina?

After posting a career-high 12.5 sacks and earning a second successive nod to the Pro Bowl, Brian Burns is entering his prime as an outside linebacker for the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers have taken notice of Burns' production rewarding him with the fifth-year option of his first-round rookie contract, in which he'll make $16 million this season. Not only that, Carolina has foregone several opportunities to trade Burns for major draft compensation. So, it's time for Burns to get paid. What will a potential new deal for Burns look like? Is 2023 the year he becomes an All-Pro?

While Burns is almost certain to produce double-digit sacks in 2023, there's a major question mark as to whether the Panthers can get enough production opposite of him at the other outside linebacker spot. The likely starter heading into training camp is sixth-year pro Marquis Haynes, who had a career-high 5.0 sacks in 2022. If given the starting nod and increased snaps, can Haynes fulfill produce at a high enough level? Or will it be a by-committee approach?

There's a possibility that the Panthers will add a veteran at the other edge rusher spot. If so, who could be a roster casualty for that move?

Plus, expectations for DJ Johnson and Amare Barno heading into 2023.

Derrick Brown is coming off a breakout 2022 season after tying Mike Rucker's franchise record for the most tackles by a defensive tackle in a single season. For Brown's efforts, the Carolina Panthers opted to exercise his fifth-year option for the 2024 season, showing an early investment in one of the team's stalwart defenders. Now that Brown has taken a step toward being a dominant defender, can he take the next step toward being a Pro Bowl honoree?

Through Brown's first three seasons, he only has six sacks. These numbers align with Brown's college production as he only tallied 12.5 sacks through four seasons at Auburn. But new Panthers defensive line coach Todd Wash believes that Brown has the potential to be a pass-rushing threat and believes that he can get it out of him. Is this the year that Brown wreaks havoc as a pass rusher?

What impact will the new additions to the defensive line have in Carolina in 2023? Is there set to be a three-man battle for the final roster spot?
