Locked On Panthers - Daily Podcast On The Carolina Panthers

In one offseason the Carolina Panthers offensive line went from arguably its greatest weakness to its greatest strength. One of the major reasons why is second-year left tackle Ickey Ekwonu. The Panthers used their 2022 first-round pick to finally stop the annual churn at the left tackle position to select the hometown kid. In doing that, it appears the team has their franchise left tackle for the next decade. Coming off of a strong debut season, can Ekwonu deliver a Pro Bowl season this fall?

One of the issues with Panthers offensive lines over the past handful of years is the inability to build continuity. While the Panthers added three new starters to the Week 1 unit, the team was finally able to field a healthy offensive line, starting only two combinations all season. Unfortunately, the injury bug bit at the worst possible time as starting right guard Austin Corbett tore his ACL in the season finale at New Orleans. Panthers head coach Frank Reich has already stated that the team expects to start Corbett on the PUP list. Second-year guard Cade Mays will likely start in his spot. How will Mays and the rest of the Panthers o-line handle Corbett's absence?

With Corbett's expected absence, is there another fringe player who could earn his way onto the roster to start the season?

The Carolina Panthers enter the 2023 season with a rebuilt wide receiving core. Gone is DJ Moore. Gone is Robbie Anderson. Veterans Adam Thielen, DJ Chark, and Damiere Byrd join a group of returnees in Terrace Marshall Jr., Laviska Shenault, and Shi Smith. The team also utilized the draft to help rebuild the position, drafting Ole Miss receiver Jonathan Mingo in the second round.

The top name of the group is Thielen, a former All-Pro and multi-time Pro Bowler. Thielen is coming off of a 700+ yard receiving season but entering the season at 33 years old. How much more does Thielen have to offer? Can he provide more than veteran leadership to the group?

The rest of the group is made up of players that have shown promise but battled through injury or have failed to produce at a consistent level. Considering that and the Panthers starting a rookie quarterback in Bryce Young, do the Panthers have enough receiving talent to aid Young during his rookie season?

What roles will each receiver play in head coach Frank Reich's new system?

Over the past three seasons, the Carolina Panthers tight end position group has ranked amongst the worst in the NFL. But could that all be coming to an end now that Frank Reich is the head coach? The Panthers signed veteran pass-catching tight end Hayden Hurst this offseason to help fix the issue. Can Hurst remain healthy for a full season and restore the tradition of successful tight ends in the passing game?

Third-year tight end Tommy Tremble was vocal a few weeks back about the previous staff's lack of attention to the tight end group in the passing game. Reich's offenses have traditionally utilized multiple tight ends. Could this be the year for Tremble to break out as a secondary option in the passing game?

Ian Thomas showed promise his rookie year but hasn't been much of a factor the past four seasons, three of which were under Matt Rhule. Is Thomas' lack of production a product or poor development? Is this the year Thomas finally lives up to the talent?

Is there room for a fourth tight end? Stephen Sullivan and Gio Ricci will both try to prove themselves during training camp and the preseason to earn their way onto the roster.

Possibly the least talked about group on the Carolina Panthers roster this offseason has been the running back room. The Panthers made a big free agency move by signing former Philadelphia Eagles running back Miles Sanders, fresh off his first career 1,000-yard rushing season and a Super Bowl appearance. Julian Council continues his roster evaluation series by taking a close look at the Panthers backs heading into 2023.

Can Miles Sanders repeat the performance that he had a year ago? Will he be called upon to be the bell cow back for Carolina?

What role will third-year back Chuba Hubbard play in 2023? Hubbard served as the backup for the past two season, getting an opportunity to lead the way in 2021 when Christian McCaffrey went down with injury. But last year took a backseat to D'Onta Foreman following the teams trade of McCaffrey. How will the new staff utilize him?

Raheem Blackshear became a core special teamer for the Panthers in 2022. While he's expected to play a similar role under special teams coordinator Chris Tabor in 2023, new Panthers head coach Frank Reich pointed out Blackshear as a player that impressed during OTAs. Could Blackshear be in store for a bigger role?

Julian Council begins in 2023 Carolina Panthers position breakdowns by evaluating the QB position. Julian discusses the biggest storyline surrounding the group, the biggest question that needs to be answered, along with an overall outlook on the position.

There's no biggest storyline than the Panthers trading up to draft Bryce Young number one overall in the 2023 draft. How will Young be able to handle the weight of expectations?

The Panthers effectively ended the QB merry-go-round by drafting Young. Now, can he lead them to the playoffs as a rookie starter?

What does the future hold for Matt Corral now that Young is in Carolina and Andy Dalton is the clear-cut backup to Young?

The Carolina Panthers are off for the summer until they begin Training Camp on August 26th at Wofford. In the meantime, the Panthers brass will take some time to evaluate the roster and discuss whether any improvements need to be made. There's been a lot of discussion about who will start at outside linebacker opposite of Brian Burns but is the depth at cornerback a bigger concern considering the injuries that Jaycee Horn and Donte Jackson have sustained the past two seasons?

Julian Council answers this question among other listener questions in the week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

The Carolina Panthers announced on Thursday morning that third-year cornerback Jaycee Horn would miss the rest of OTAs and minicamp with an injury to his left ankle and foot but is expected to be fully recovered in time for the start of training camp.

Horn's injury is the latest of a string of setbacks that he's suffered since being drafted by Carolina in 2021. Horn missed the final 14 games of the 2021 season following a broken foot then missed time in 2022 dealing with a rid injury and a broken wrist that kept him out for the final two weeks.

The injury history has now called into question Horn's durability, which he downplayed in a recent interview. How concerned should the Panthers be about Horn's pattern of injuries? Julian Council answers this question among other listener questions in the week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

After a busy offseason for the Carolina Panthers there's seemingly only one more thing to do: sign Pro Bowl EDGE rusher Brian Burns to a long-term contract. Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer has had multiple opportunities to trade Burns and declined. He also stated that "Burns will be here" when discussing the upcoming negotiations. Julian Council examines when fans should anticipate a deal to get done between the two sides.

Burns isn't the only Panther without a multiyear contract. First-overall pick Bryce Young and second-round selection Jonathan Mingo have yet to come to terms on their rookie deals. Julian looks at the history of when first-round QBs signed to provide insight into when Young may come to an agreement.

Plus, Tommy Tremble shared some interesting thoughts with Charlotte Observer on Tuesday. Julian takes a look at Trembel's role heading into 2023.
