Locked On Panthers - Daily Podcast On The Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers conclude their 2022 season at New Orleans on Sunday but Julian Council already has eyes on the offseason. The first order of business for the team will be finding a new head coach. Panthers interim Steve Wilks will be one of the top candidates once the hiring cycle begins on Monday. But is Wilks capable of leading the Panthers to new heights if given the job?

Julian answers this among other listener questions in this week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks has preached all week about his team finishing the right way when they head to New Orleans to face the Saints on Sunday. Can Wilks add one more win to his resume as he hopes to land the full-time job?

Julian Council and Locked On Saints host Ross Jackson discuss the Week 18 matchup along with the impact the game could have on both teams' offseasons as the two NFC South rivals look to close out the 2022 season on a high note.

Julian Council begins the show by discussing the emotional scene that played out in Cincinnati on Monday Night when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapsed during the game.

The Carolina Panthers coaching search has begun in earnest. According to multiple reports on Monday, Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh is interested in a return to the NFL. That interest includes the Panthers, who are looking to fulfill their vacancy after firing Matt Rhule earlier this season. That interest was confirmed on Tuesday when multiple reports revealed that Panthers owners David Tepper had a conversation with Harbaugh about the opening. Harbaugh spent four previous seasons as the San Francisco 49ers head coach prior to coaching his alma mater. Would Jim Harbaugh be a good fit in Carolina?

While Harbaugh is potentially a candidate for the job Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks is also expected to receive consideration for the full-time post. A report out of Greenville, SC suggests that Wilks is "unlikely" to earn the job. Julian reacts to this and shares several conflicting reports that dispel the notion that Wilks isn't a strong contender to have the interim tag removed.

Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks met with the local media on Monday afternoon following the Panthers 30-24 loss at Tampa Bay. Wilks provided clarity on each of the Panthers turnovers along with the coverage busts that led to three Mike Evans touchdowns. Plus, Wilks revealed the status of Jaycee Horn heading into Sunday's contest at New Orleans and why Josh Norman only played 10 snaps vs. Tampa.

Wilks also reiterated his message from Sunday that his team is going to finish the right way. Meaning, that Wilks isn't looking at the Week 18 trip to New Orleans as a "meaningless" game and trying to preserve draft position. Could a win vs. the Saints help improve the odds that Wilks earns the full-time job?

Julian Council explains why he doesn't believe this past Sunday's result at Tampa nor the upcoming game against the Saints should change the way people, mainly David Tepper, feel about Steve Wilks.

The Carolina Panthers dreams of winning the NFC South came to an end on Sunday afternoon with a, 30-24, loss to the Tampa Bay Buccanneers. The Panthers were plagued by three Sam Darnold turnovers along with the inability to cover Mike Evans and run the football. Julian Council reacts to the loss and ponders the future for Steve Wilks, CJ Henderson, and Darnold as the Panthers prepare for their final game of the season at New Orleans next Sunday.

It's do-or-die time for the Carolina Panthers in Tampa on Sunday afternoon. With a win, the Panthers will extend their playoff hopes for another week, whereas with a loss, their dreams of an NFC South division title will come crashing down to reality.

One of the key areas to watch on Sunday will be the Panthers cornerback room. The team signed Josh Norman to the practice squad, with the expectation that he'll be elevated to the active roster on Sunday after top corner Jaycee Horn broke his wrist in the win vs. Detroit. Can Norman and an inexperienced cornerback position deliver against Mike Evans and Chris Godwin?

Julian Council answers this among other listener questions in another edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

The 6-9 Carolina Panthers kept their playoff hopes alive with a resounding, 37-23, victory against the Detroit Lions on Christmas Eve. Now, their attention focuses on the NFC South division title as Carolina heads to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers in one of the biggest regular season matchups in a long time between the two. With a win, Carolina will take one step closer to their first division crown since 2015. While a loss will end interim Steve Wilks bid a miraculous turnaround from 1-4 to the NFL's postseason.

Julian Council and Locked On Buccaneers host David Harrison break down the top storylines, and key matchups, and provide their predictions for Sunday's NFC South title bout.

Between Baker Mayfield now starting for the Rams, Christian McCaffrey headed to the 49ers, Matt Rhule set to coach Nebraska in 2023, and Steve Wilks coaching his way into serious consideration for the full-time head coaching gig, this has been one of the wilder Carolina Panthers seasons in franchise history. Julian Council discusses whether this season outweirds the 2014 campaign.

The Panthers matchup against the Buccaneers is as must-win as it gets. If Carolina fails to come out on top their playoff dreams will end. While a win would give Carolina a win-and-in situation against New Orleans. Julian asks when there was a Panthers regular season game with this much on the line.

Steve Wilks can make a stronger case for the permanent head coaching job in Carolina if he's able to close the season out with two wins and a division title. If Wilks is able to lead the team to such heights and Panthers owner David Tepper bypasses Wilks for the job should Wilks stick around? Could other teams in the NFL be interested in his services as the headman? Julian evaluates all the potential options ahead for Wilks.

The Carolina Panthers might've restored their playoff hopes with a decisive 37-23 win over Detroit on Christmas Eve but it came at a cost as Jaycee Horn fractured his wrist in the win. Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks announced on Monday that Horn would have surgery on his wrist on Tuesday without providing any details on whether Horn could return this season. In response, the Panthers brought in former All-Pro Josh Norman for a workout with the expectation that he will sign.

What should the realistic expectations for Norman be? Can Norman help propel the Panthers to the playoffs as he did in 2014?

According to ESPN's Football Power Index, the Panthers have a 30.6% chance to be NFC South champions. Simply, if Carolina wins its two remaining games at Tampa, on Sunday, then the following week at New Orleans they'll be the division's lone representative in the playoffs. Should the Panthers chances be viewed as higher or lower than ESPN's projection?

The Carolina Panthers set multiple franchise records in a convincing, 37-23, win against the Detroit Lions in the team's home finale.

Carolina set franchise records for rushing yards and totals in the first half along with franchise records in rushing yards (320) and total yards (570) in a game.

Two of the bright spots for Carolina were QB Sam Darnold and much-maligned OC Ben McAdoo. Julian Council gives the two their flowers after a historic afternoon at Bank of America Stadium.

The Panthers win restores the team's NFC South title hopes as they'll head to Tampa Bay next Sunday for a chance to take first place in the division. Julian looks at the NFC South title race heading into Christmas.
