Locked On Panthers - Daily Podcast On The Carolina Panthers

Following the tragic passing of Charlotte FC player Anton Walkers, the Carolina Panthers will resume their head coaching search on Monday in New York City when they meet with former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton and New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka. It's been widely reported that in order for a team to acquire Payton's services that they'll have to part ways with a first-round pick. Julian Council wonders why the Panthers are seriously considering Payton as a candidate when the compensation for them is likely higher than Payton's other suitors.

Former Panthers QB coach Ken Dorsey interviewed virtually with the panthers brass on Saturday. Julian updates on the candidates that are still left to interview and gauges who the top candidates are as the search heads into its third week.

Plus, reports on Thursday evening came out that Nicole Tepper failed to complete mandatory diversity training to take part in the Panthers hiring process. Julian explains why this is an issue and yet another example of the Tepper's falling short on the football side of Tepper Sports & Entertainment.

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper will meet with former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton today in New York. According to Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune/The New Orleans Advocate Saints GM Mickey Loomis is looking for similar compensation that the Raiders received they traded John Gruden to Tampa Bay years ago. Meaning that the Panthers would have to part ways with multiple first-round picks in order to acquire the Super Bowl-winning HC. But that leaves the question of how the Panthers will then acquire a franchise QB. Can the Panthers trade for Sean Payton and find a franchise QB this offseason? Julian Council answers that question among other listener questions in this week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio wrote on Tuesday evening about the possibility of two of the Carolina Panthers biggest adversaries of the past 20 years teaming up in Carolina in 2023. Florio reported a year ago that Sean Payton and Tom Brady were trying to link up in Miami until that blew up in Dolphins owner Stephen Ross' face, costing his franchise a first-round pick this April. Now, with the Panthers interest in Payton and Brady set to be a free agent, Florio believes that Carolina could be the destination for both. Does this pairing make any sense for Carolina?

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Steve Wilks is likely to be a finalist for the head job in Carolina but the focus for Tepper remains on a younger offensive head coach. Can Wilks withstand the outside interest?

Plus, more updates on the Panthers coaching search including a former Panthers staffer set to interview for the HC role.

Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson shocked the NFL world as he opted to return to the Lions in 2023 to continue to call plays for one of the league's top 5 offenses in 2022. None are likely more shocked than Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, who was reportedly eager to speak with the Asheville native on Wednesday. From the onset of the Panthers coaching search last week, Johnson was deemed the favorite to wear the headset in Carolina next fall. Now that Johnson is out of it where does Tepper go?

Former Panthers and New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper originally didn't believe that Sean Payton would ever come to Carolina but over the weekend that opinion changed. Julian detailed a conversation that he had with Harper while also pondering why Payton is interested in any of the available jobs.

Plus, could Johnson pulling out of the Panthers search be a blessing in disguise for Carolina? Julian recalls being miffed by Johnson being the betting favorite when he hadn't even been interviewed and wonders if this now will force Tepper to keep an open mind during this hiring cycle.

The Carolina Panthers have officially entered the Sean Payton Sweepstakes as the team received permission on Sunday afternoon to interview the former New Orleans Saints head coach. Payton revealed on The Herd with Colin Cowherd that he'll interview with Panthers owner David Tepper later this week in New York. He also said that he believes that trade compensation for his service would only cost a mid-to-late first-round pick. Is that the same price for Carolina? Julian Council explains why he doesn't believe trading for Payton is the best move for Carolina.

While the Panthers are searching for a new head coach they're also in talks to find a new defensive coordinator for the Panthers. That includes original Panthers DC Vic Fangio, who has been linked to being Payton's DC if he ends up with a head coaching job. Is the Panthers interest in other DCs another sign that Steve Wilks is unlikely to get the job?

Detroit Lions OC Ben Johnson has been the favorite to be the next Panthers head coach since the coaching cycle began last week. But Johnson has yet to interview for the position. How is Johnson the favorite when he hasn't been interviewed? Julian explains how and what that says about the "search" Tepper is conducting in Charlotte.

As the Carolina Panthers head coaching search continues it's fair to wonder how attractive of a job Carolina is. The Panthers have a young core on defense along with a few young pieces to build around on offense but are missing the biggest piece, a quarterback. Julian Council answers this question along with other listener questions in this week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper appears to have a type as he continues to make requests to speak with potential candidates for the franchise's head coach opening. Several of the candidates have a similar background of having played QB in college and/or the NFL, having worked directly with QBs, and having called played as the OC of an NFL offense. The trend continued on Wednesday as Tepper requested to interview Dallas Cowboys OC Kellen Moore. Julian Council breaks down Moore as a candidate.

Tepper also interviewed former Panthers QB and most recently Indianapolis Colts HC Frank Reich on Wednesday. Does Reich represent the perfect balance between coaching experience and offensive innovation?

Steve Wilks is Julian's top candidate but it feels pretty clear that Tepper is likely to hire a coach with an offensive background. In preparation for this inevitability, Julian ranked the non-Wilks candidates that are set to interview in Carolina.

Plus, who else should Tepper be looking to interview? Is he making a mistake by limiting his options to one particular background?

The Carolina Panthers have begun their search for a new head coach as former Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell interviewed for the job on Monday and Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks interviewed on Tuesday.

The Panthers have also sent out several requests to current NFL offensive coordinators. Ben Johnson (Lions), Mike Kafka (Giants), Shane Steichen (Eagles), and Ken Dorsey (Bills) have all received requests to interview in Carolina. What do they all have in common? They're young, they've worked directly with quarterbacks, and all played quarterback at least at the collegiate level. Seeing that an early trend has emerged, how real of a chance does Steve Wilks have to earn the job?

Betonline released odds for the next Panthers head coach. Julian Council reacted to what he viewed as a surprise top candidate.

The 2022 edition of the Carolina Panthers met with the local media one final time as the team cleaned out their lockers and looked ahead to the most important offseason since David Tepper bought the franchise.

Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks discussed the challenges that his team went through while applauding them for helping to bring back the meaning of "Keep Pounding". Wilks is set to interview for the full-time job but didn't want to go into detail about the process ahead. Would Panthers owner David Tepper be making a major mistake if he bypasses Wilks?

Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer spoke to the media for the first time since Matt Rhule was fired. Fitterer shared that he will be a part of the hiring process and believes that the Panthers can take a shot at some explosive players this offseason after using the past two to build the foundation of the team. Can Fitterer deliver during this offseason?

Several Panthers players also discussed their futures including center Bradley Bozeman, who is a free agent, along with D'Onta Foreman. Which players should be priorities once free agency begins?

Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks preached all week out his team finishing the job in New Orleans in the season finale. While the game was ugly at times, Carolina, led by Sam Darnold on the final drive, walked off with a 42-yard field goal from Eddy Pineiro, to close the season out with a, 10-7, win against the Saints.

The win ends Wilks' interim tenure at 6-6. Is he the frontrunner for the job? FOX's Jay Glazer reported that former Indianapolis Colts head coaches Frank Reich and Jim Caldwell are set to interview in Carolina. CBS' Jonathan Jones provided an update on Jim Harbaugh's interest in Carolina.

The Panthers winning didn't have much impact on where they're sitting in the draft come April but the events in Indianapolis and Chicago shifted how the top of the draft will look. The Texans win at Indy means that the Bears will hold the No. 1 pick in the draft. Meaning, that the Panthers likely have to weigh trading up to ensure that they get their quarterback of the future. Should Carolina trade a king's ransom to Chicago for the right to draft Bryce Young?
