Locked On Panthers - Daily Podcast On The Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers host the Detroit Lions on Christmas Eve in a game that has playoff implications in the NFC. The Lions, having won six of their last seven, could further cement their place in the NFC Wild Card races while the Panthers likely need to win their final three games in order to represent the NFC South in the postseason. Is this a must-win game for Carolina?

Julian Council answers that question among others in this Christmas Eve Eve edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks preached that his team needs to get back to basics following a disappointing loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Panthers failed to establish themselves at the line of scrimmage costing the team an opportunity to sit atop of the NFC South heading into their Week 16 matchup vs. Detroit. Have opponents figured out how to stop the Panthers?

Luckily for Carolina, Tampa Bay failed to hold onto a 17-0 lead against the Bengals on Sunday and remains only a game ahead of the Panthers. Meaning, that if Carolina wins out they will be division champions. But after watching the Panthers squander the same situation on Sunday should anyone trust this team not to do it again?

Following the loss to Pittsburgh, the Panthers are assured a fifth consecutive losing season. Julian Council reflects on the past five years and wonders if this is the worst stretch in franchise history.

The Carolina Panthers no longer control their playoff lives after losing, 24-16, at home to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Carolina's formula to success had been running the football well on offense while controlling its opponent's rushing attack. The Panthers repeatedly lost the battle at the line of the scrimmage only being able to muster 21 yards rushing while allowing the Steelers to run for 157 yards on the ground.

Carolina also struggled to get off the field on 3rd down, allowing Pittsburgh to convert 12/16 on the money down.

Carolina will now need to win their final three games and have Tampa Bay lose a game outside of the two teams' Week 17 meeting. Can Carolina reel off three in a row?

Steve Wilks is now 4-5 as the interim head coach in Carolina. What impact does the loss to Pittsburgh have on his hopes of earning the full-time job?

If the Carolina Panthers win their final four games they will be NFC South division champions. If that happens, interim head coach Steve Wilks would have a strong case for the full-time position, after posting an 8-4 record following Matt Rhule's dismissal along with the departure of several staffers and Christian McCaffrey.

Since Wilks has taken over the Panthers have found an identity and look to be among the surging teams in the NFL. Has Steve Wilks brought back what it means to 'Keep Pounding'?

Julian Council answers this among other listener questions in this week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

The Carolina Panthers and Pittsburgh Steelers face off in Charlotte on Sunday afternoon as two 5-8 teams with two different motivations. The Panthers can end a five-year playoff drought by winning their remaining games, while Pittsburgh needs to win out to avoid head coach Mike Tomlin's first losing season.

Julian Council and Locked On Steelers host Christopher Carter break down the top storylines, and key matchups, and provide their predictions for Sunday's NFC vs. AFC matchup.

The Carolina Panthers have full control of their playoff lives heading into the final four games of the regular season. On Sunday, they'll welcome the Pittsburgh Steelers, who represent the Panthers easiest remaining opponent on the schedule. Julian Council explains why he believes Sunday's matchup against the black and gold could be a trap game for Carolina.

If the Panthers were to drop a contest in the final four weeks could they still win the division? Julian breaks down the Panthers path as 8-9 division champs.

ESPN's Todd McShay released his first mock draft of the year on Tuesday. McShay has the Panthers selecting Florida QB Anthony Richardson 11th overall while stating the pick would be a desperate move for Carolina. Would taking a chance on Richardson represent desperation? Or is going the Richardson path an exercise in patience in QB development? Plus, Julian offers a quick thought on trading up for a QB.

Are the Carolina Panthers the most interesting team in the NFL heading into Week 15? Julian presents the case for why that may be the case.

Following the Carolina Panthers 30-24 win in Seattle, Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks visited with the local Charlotte media challenging Panthers fans to show up in large numbers to keep the traveling Pittsburgh Steelers fans out of Bank of America Stadium. Can the Panthers avoid another stadium takeover with the team back in playoff contention?

Wilks also gave an update on WR DJ Moore, who exited Sunday's game late in the fourth quarter with a lower leg injury.

Panthers fans have spent the past 24 hours calling for Panthers owner David Tepper to remove the interim tag from Wilks. Julian Council explains why NFL rules prevent that from being possible at the moment and why Tepper should keep an open mind when evaluating head coaching candidates.

If the Panthers were to fall short of the NFC South title could they still be a Wild Card team at 8-9? Julian breaks down at the NFC Wild Card picture.

Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks began the week stating that his team needed to find a playoff mentality heading into the final five weeks of the regular season. Wilks also challenged the team to do something that they hadn't done all season long, win on the road and win back-to-back games. The Panthers achieved both of those goals on Sunday, winning, 30-24, at Seattle to announce themselves as true contenders in the NFC South title race.

The Panthers division championship hopes were aided by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers blowout loss at San Francisco. Carolina now sits one game back of Tampa with a Week 17 trip to Tampa on the slate. Simply, if the Panthers win out they'll be NFC South champs.

Wilks is now 4-4 since taking over and has established an identity on both sides of the ball for Carolina. Has Wilks shown Panthers owner David Tepper that he's the right man for the job moving forward?
