Locked On Panthers - Daily Podcast On The Carolina Panthers

Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks performed his weekly routine of playing musical chairs on the QB decision by not committing to either of the three available QBs on the roster. Julian Council explains why he no longer cares about who starts at the position and why it likely doesn't matter as far as the rest of the season goes for the Panthers.

Former Panthers head coach Matt Rhule has emerged a month and a half after being fired. Julian reacts to a few of Rhule's quotes about his time in Carolina and reflects on why things went wrong with Rhule.

Baker Mayfield and the Carolina Panthers offense struggled once again as the Panthers remain winless on the road this season following a, 13-3, loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Mayfield threw two interceptions and was sacked four times on the afternoon. Should this be the last time we see Mayfield on the field for Carolina?

Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks hinted at wanting to get Sam Darnold some work in during the game but didn't go to Darnold while the offense struggled. Will we see Darnold next week against Denver?

The Panthers defense was excellent in a losing effort. How much of the unit's consistency adds to the frustration of the Panthers fielding the league's worst offense?

Sitting at 3-7 heading into a Sunday bout at Baltimore, the Carolina Panthers are positioned to select in the Top 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft. Knowing that it's likely that Carolina will select one of the top QBs on the board. But what if the Panthers don't love the QB that's available to them? Should they still draft the player out of a desire to fill a massive need or would someone like Alabama DE Will Anderson make more sense for the organization?

Julian Council answers this question among others in this week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

The 3-7 Carolina Panthers kept their playoff hope alive for another week with a Thursday Night Football victory over the Atlanta Falcons. But the Tampa Bay Buccaneers still sit two games clear of the Panthers in first place in the NFC South. Carolina will travel to M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday as Lamar Jackson and the AFC North-leading Baltimore Ravens welcome them to Charm City. With eight weeks remaining in the regular season, can Carolina begin the close the gap?

Julian Council and Locked On Ravens host Kevin Oestreicher break down the top storylines, and key matchups, and provide their predictions for Sunday's interconference matchup.

Some of Julian's friends were debating on Tuesday whether the Carolina Panthers made a mistake by passing on Justin Fields during the 2021 NFL Draft. In recent weeks, Fields has begun to come into his own leading those around the league to believe that Fields is the top of the five first-round QBs taken during that year's draft. Julian ponders whether the Panthers actually missed out on Fields' talent or if there's something else that their missing out on that is actually propelling this discussion.

ESPN NFL Draft analysts have differing opinions on who the top five QBs in the 2023 NFL Draft are. Undoubtedly, the Panthers brass will have similar thoughts as they're likely to select atop of the draft this spring. Julian discusses some of the top names and asks whether Carolina would be better off taking a defensive player like Alabama's Will Anderson instead of gambling on a QB.

Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, and PJ Walker are all set to be free agents come March. In the meantime, each of the three will look to earn the starting nod at QB for the remaining seven games. Who among them is more likely to return to Carolina next season in a backup role mentoring a rookie QB?

Julian Council begins the show by reflecting on the tragic shooting involving three University of Virginia football players that included one from the Charlotte area, along with two other students.

Surprisingly, on Monday morning Baker Mayfield was named the Carolina Panthers starting QB on Sunday at Baltimore. Apparently, PJ Walker sustained an unreported ankle injury in the victory Thursday night against Atlanta. Walker will miss this week while Mayfield gets the nod over Sam Darnold. Should Darnold be starting instead of Mayfield?

Walker joins Darnold and Mayfield in having suffered a high ankle sprain on the Bank of America Stadium turf. Those three aren't the only players to be injured on that field. Do the Panthers have a turf issue? How related are the three QB injuries to that surface? Should David Tepper reconsider changing the playing field?

Following the Carolina Panthers 25-15 win against the Atlanta Falcons, Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks says that he expects to start PJ Walker against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Wilks hasn't committed to Walker past each game yet has continued to play him. Has Wilks been telling Panthers fans without saying it that Walker is his guy moving forward?

The Panthers announced on Friday that CB Donte Jackson will miss the remainder of the season with a torn Achilles. This marks the third straight season that Jackson has dealt with injuries. What is Jackson's future in Carolina?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers win in Munich maintained their two-game lead over the Panthers in the NFC South. At this point, Carolina has no margin for error. Julian Council projects what record the Panthers would have to post in their final seven games to have a chance at a division title.

The Carolina Panthers kept their NFC South title hopes alive with a, 25-15, win against the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football. Carolina bounced back during a short week to keep the Falcons rushing attack while totaling 200+ yards on the ground.

Carolina now sits at 3-7 overall and 3-1 in the NFC South. Can Carolina find a way to break through against non-divisional opponents during the next five weeks?

PJ Walker was able to successfully manage the game on Thursday but was fortunate to not be intercepted multiple times. What will Panthers interim head coach decide to do at QB following the mini-bye week for Carolina?

Carolina Panthers Steve Wilks provided updates on the team prior to the Panthers Thursday Night Football matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. Panthers safety Jeremy Chinn has been designated to return from IR but Wilks stated that it would be "asinine" for him to play Chinn given the significant amount of time he's missed. On the other hand, Donte Jackson appears to be set to go after sitting out Sunday and Brian Burns is more of a mystery as he deals with a shoulder injury.

Another issue facing the Panthers is the threat of Tropical Storm Nicole, which could reach Charlotte right after kickoff on Thursday night. This should help to further emphasize the Panthers goal of stopping the Atlanta Falcons rushing attack.

There have been several reports of what the Panthers turned down for players like Brian Burns and DJ Moore. Julian Council answers whether the Panthers made a mistake by not shipping those two off along with other questions on this special Wednesday Mailbag edition of Locked On Panthers.
