Locked On Panthers - Daily Podcast On The Carolina Panthers

Tuesday marked the one-year anniversary of the team's decision to trade a second, fourth, and sixth-round pick for the then-New York Jets quarterback. A year later the team is looking to replace the quarterback they believed would be the franchise moving forward. Who is to be blamed for this hellacious decision?

The Panthers are set to bring in Malik Willis (Liberty), Kenny Pickett (Pitt), Matt Corral (Ole Miss), Desmond Ridder (Cincinnati), Sam Howell (UNC), and Bailey Zappe (Western Kentucky) to Charlotte next week for the teams 30 pre-draft visits. Which of these prospects are the most desirable?

ESPN's Todd McShay released his two-round Mock Draft 4.0, once again mocking Kenny Pickett to the Panthers. McShay views Pickett as the most NFL-ready of the prospects available. Julian explains why that reasoning is shortsighted given what's needed to win in the NFL today.

A year ago the Carolina Panthers traded for Sam Darnold signifying that they had found their starting quarterback for the 2021 season. A year later, Carolina is still in search of a franchise quarterback and the 2022 Week 1 starter is unknown. Does the Panthers lack of offseason quarterback moves signal that the draft will be where they procure one?

Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer is currently undergoing his first full offseason in Carolina. That has led to some key free agency signings on offense, defense, and special teams. Julian Council provides his free agency grades.

A recent mock draft from ESPN's Mike Tannenbaum has the Carolina Panthers drafting Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett at sixth overall. Would the Panthers be better off starting Sam Darnold in 2022 or a rookie quarterback like Pickett or Liberty's Malik Willis?

According to the Charlotte Observer's Ellis Williams, an NFL scout told him that the Panthers would like to select Willis, Alabama left tackle Evan Neal or NC State tackle Ikem Ekwonu. If all are available at six, who should be the choice? If it's Willis and one of the two tackles available who should be the Panthers selection?

Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and San Francisco 49ers signal-caller Jimmy Garoppol remain on the trading block. Both player's value has dropped in recent weeks. Should the Panthers wait for one of them to be cut before making a decision at quarterback?

Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule spoke to the media Tuesday morning at the NFL Owners Meetings in Palm Beach, Florida. Rhule answered questions addressing the Panthers ongoing search at quarterback. Rhule stated that he believes that the incumbent starter at the position Sam Darnold will "take a huge step this year" working with new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. If that is true then why are the Panthers pursuing other options at the position? Is the Panthers best option at adding competition to the quarterback room by drafting a rookie?

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday that Cam Newton is receiving interest from several teams including the Carolina Panthers. The Athletic's Joe Person also reported that Newton was approached by the Panthers to be a backup had they acquired Deshaun Watson. Should Newton return to Carolina as a backup or should he be offered a real opportunity to compete for the starting job?

Plus, one of the NFL overtime rules proposals easily passed 29-3 on Tuesday, meaning that in the playoffs both offenses will have a chance to possess the ball. Was this the right move for the NFL?

The Carolina Panthers headed east to Chapel Hill on Monday to check out quarterback prospect Sam Howell. Could Howell be an option for Panthers if they're able to trade back into the second round?

The NFL Owners meetings are taking place in Palm Beach, Florida this week. Panthers owner David Tepper, who was vocal during his first few seasons of owning the team, has been mysteriously silent since last speaking publicly in December of 2020 following the dismissal of then-general manager Marty Hurney. The Charlotte Observer's Jonathan Alexander tried speaking to Tepper on Monday but he declined. Should Tepper address the fan base or is he justified in his silence?

During the NFL Owners meetings, there will be a discussion on the overtime rules that became a major topic of discussion following the Kansas City-Buffalo playoff game. Should the owners agree to change the rules? If so, which of the two proposals makes the most sense.

Carolina Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer spoke to the local Charlotte media on Friday to discuss where the organization stands post-free agency. Fitterer stated the team is open to exploring all options at quarterback as Sam Darnold is the current leader in that room to start Week 1. What are the odds that Darnold is the Week 1 starter for Carolina?

Fitterer also discussed how free agency has allowed the Panthers to have plenty of options when it comes to what to do with the sixth overall pick. Is it becoming more likely that the Panthers draft a quarterback with that pick?

How likely is a return to Carolina for Cam Newton? If the Panthers offered Newton a chance to compete for the starting job would he have already have re-signed?

Shi Smith gets arrested. What's the likelihood that he puts on a Panthers uniform again.

Plus, post-NFL free agency Vegas win totals.
