Locked On Panthers - Daily Podcast On The Carolina Panthers

While the Carolina Panthers have made additions to multiple positions of need this offseason, tight end remains the lone position to not be properly address. Now, with the NFL Draft just over a week away, will the Panthers finally add to a lackluster position group?

The first thing the Panthers will have to ask themselves is whether Tommy Tremble, heading into the final year of his rookie deal, can show that he's a true TE1 at the NFL level. If not, does that mean it's time to find someone who can upgrade the position group?

The top tight end in the draft is Georgia's Brock Bowers. Bowers was an All-American at UGA and helped lead the Bulldogs to back-to-back national championships. Those accolades now have Bowers projected to be a top 10 pick. Is it worth it for the Panthers to trade up for Bowers? Or is there another player available in Day 2 who can address their needs?

Plus, where does tight end rank among the Panthers needs and when are they most likely to address the position?

The Carolina Panthers will have to wait until Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft before making their first selection. Day 1 of the draft is sure to be a stressful night for the Carolina brass as they wait to see which players will be available to them atop the second round. As we see every year, there's always a few players who were expected to go in the first round that fall to the second round. Of these potential players, which one is a no-brainer selection for the Panthers if they fall to 33?

Julian Council answers this question among other listener questions in this week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

The 2024 NFL Draft is two weeks away and the hype continues to build about what will happen at the top of the draft. But what about what will happen in the later rounds on Saturday afternoon? The Panthers have both Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders under contract for this season but could be on the hunt for a long-term option in the backfield. Should the Panthers consider taking a back with one of their late round picks?

Julian Council provides his thoughts and potential prospects that the Panthers could select.

WR and EDGE are considered to be among the top needs for the Carolina Panthers entering the 2024 NFL Draft but what about linebacker? The Panthers enter the draft with Shaq Thompson and Josey Jewell slated to be their starters at the two insider linebacker spots but both of those players will be 30 by the end of the 2024 season. Is it time to find a long-term option in the middle of the Panthers defense?

Hillsborough native Payton Wilson concluded a stellar career at NC State by being named a unanimous All-American, first-team All-ACC, and ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He also won the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker, and the Chuck Bednarik Award, which honors college football's best defensive player. But Wilson comes with an extensive injury history dating back to high school, which could have an impact on his draft stock. Should Wilson be the Panthers top option at LB?

If Wilson isn't the answer for Carolina, who are the other options?

The Carolina Panthers went to work to rebuild its offensive line this offseason. During free agency, the Panthers spent big money on Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis to take over as the teams starting guard. The Panthers also decided to keep Ickey Ekwonu at left tackle, in favor of moving him inside to guard, and brought back Taylor Moton for another season at right tackle.

The remaining starting offensive line position will be held by Austin Corbett, who moves from right guard to center. Corbett has experience playing center but its limited to a few weeks during OTAs with the Los Angeles Rams. Considering his overall lack of experience and the regime change, will the Panthers look to draft a center? Julian Council discusses why he believes it's time.

According to ESPN's Jordan Reid, there's a possibility that all of the starting caliber centers will be drafted prior to the 3rd round. Can the Panthers afford to wait until 65 to select a center?

The 2024 NFL Draft is expected to boast a deep class at WR. Despite the addition of Diontae Johnson, the Carolina Panthers remain in need of more difference makers at the position. Unfortunately for Carolina, they aren't scheduled to make a selection until Day 2 of the draft when they lead off the second round with the 33rd overall pick. Other teams like the Chiefs, Bills, and Chargers sit toward the end of the first round and could look to add receiver help. How would a run on receivers in the first round impact the Panthers?

While the focus from fans and draft experts is on the Panthers adding to the offense to begin the second round, would it be wise for the team to sure up the defensive line, much like they have the offensive line?

Julian Council answers these questions among other listener questions in this week's edition of the Weekly Friday Mailbag.

The NFL news cycle was at it again as the Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills agreed to a trade sending All-Pro WR Stefon Diggs to Houston. Upon hearing this news, many Carolina Panthers fans wondered whether this is a deal that Carolina should've made. Julian Council discusses why the Panthers didn't miss the boat on Diggs and what fans real takeaway from the trade should be.

While the Panthers didn't trade for Diggs, that doesn't mean they aren't interested in trading for another WR ahead of the draft. Several reports indicated that Carolina would likely be players in any trade for Tee Higgins if he became available. Higgins has requested a trade from Cincinnati and depending on the Bengals willingness to placate Higgins, he would on his way out prior to the draft. Julian determines the likelihood of the Panthers making a big move at WR ahead of the draft.

Thanks to the Brian Burns trade, the Panthers now own two second round picks. Would it be feasible for the Panthers to double dip and draft two receivers with those picks?
