Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins

The first round of the NHL Draft is tonight, and the Penguins (for now) have just one pick, so who will they take? Patrick and Hunter begin the show discussing the state of play going into the first round of the NHL Draft tonight, and the likelihood of whether or not Kyle Dubas and the Penguins can move up from 22nd overall. (0:00) Then, there has been considerable buzz surrounding RFA forward Jason Robertson out of Dallas, so can the Penguins find a way to acquire him or will the cost be too high? They also go over who they think, realistically, the Penguins could take at 22, should they not move up. (14:09) Finally, they give a couple of quick thoughts about what they think will happen tonight for the Penguins that few may see coming. (25:47)

The Penguins had a busy day, introducing the Hoffmann Family to Pittsburgh, and making a depth trade! Hunter and Patrick begin the show by reacting to the Hoffmann Family’s introductory press conference. (1:15) They talk about the Hoffmanns' commitment to Pittsburgh, how they plan to support the hockey operations staff, and what comes next for the ECHL affiliation agreement. Then, Kyle Dubas sent two picks to the Capitals in exchange for Hendrix Lapierre. (16:12) They figure out where he fits, why Dubas made the move, and go over his NHL tenure. Finally, after so many draft profiles, it’s time for some players to avoid when the Penguins make their pick on Friday. (24:50)

The trade market in the NHL over the past few days has been bonkers, but the Penguins might be able to win by simply not playing. Patrick and Hunter begin the show with another draft profile, taking a look at Swedish forward Elton Hermansson, who played well in MoDo this past year. While he could be available at 22, he certainly wouldn't be among the Penguins' first choices. (0:00) Then, with all of the big moves made across the NHL in the past few days, many find themselves asking, "Kyle, where are the trades?" However, when you look at the players and assets that have been moved, the Penguins may not be able to make similar moves, but that could work out in their favor in the long run. (14:21) Finally, the NHL Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale of the Penguins to the Hoffmann Family of Companies this week, and Patrick and Hunter discuss what they hope to see from the new ownership. The Penguins aren’t expected to be very active on July 1, but a former second overall pick could be available for them! Hunter and Patrick begin the show with another draft profile, taking a look at forward Adam Novotny, who had a big year with the Peterborough Petes and has a lot of upside. (1:40) They then discuss the idea of the Penguins pursuing former second overall pick Patrik Laine, who could play the role of this year’s Anthony Mantha. (13:33) Despite missing a lot of time over the past two years due to injury, he still possesses a great shot and value on the power play. Finally, they touch on a couple of news and notes, including the preseason schedule, development camp, and an update on the Penguins’ ownership situation. (25:10)

Kyle Dubas and the Penguins have said they're looking for mid-20s players who could be part of the team for the long run. Does Elias Pettersson fit that bill? Patrick and Hunter begin the show discussing whether Elias Pettersson from the Vancouver Canucks is worth acquiring. He's 27, he makes just a shade over $11 million for the next five years, and while he's seen a decline in his numbers the past two seasons, it could be more attributed to his environment rather than his talent. They touch on what they think it would take to get him, and where he would fit on the Penguins if acquired. (0:00) Then, the NHL Draft is just a few days away, and the Penguins still hold the 22nd overall pick, so they profile a big, powerful forward out of the QMJHL, Maddox Dagenais, who could be available when Kyle Dubas steps to the podium. (16:27) Finally, the Penguins have hired Ron Francis as a special advisor for the hockey operations staff. They talk about how even if this is just a franchise legend coming home, it's a smart move for the hockey ops department. (25:54)

We're a week out from the 2026 NHL Draft, and that means it's time to dive into some of the top prospects even more. Hunter and Patrick are joined by Jesse Marshall, and the three of them go very in-depth with some of the top prospects. They start with Nikita Klepov and why some people are a bit more down on him, despite the high-end skill that he has flashed. (1:22) They quickly move to JP Hurlbert's game (14:20) and why he'd be a solid pick at No. 22 overall before looking at a few other prospects (32:40) and even getting Jesse's prediction as to who the Penguins will draft in the first round. All that, plus much more, is on this episode of Locked On Penguins.

Bo Byram is reportedly on the trading block, so should the Penguins be making calls to Buffalo? Patrick and Hunter begin the show, before getting into a potential Byram trade, by finishing up the season-in-review series. They take some quick looks at players such as Filip Hallander, Ryan Graves, Jack St. Ivany, and Caleb Jones. They talk about their limited action with the Penguins, where they fit moving forward, or if they're on their way out. (0:00) Then, according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, Ryan Shea will be testing the free agency market on July 1. While that doesn't immediately mean he won't be back, it does appear that he's priced himself out of a Penguins' uniform. (15:15) Finally, with Byram reportedly on the trade market, should the Penguins target the 2019 4th-overall pick? (25:46)

After getting a 9-game tryout, it was clear Harrison Brunicke wasn’t quite ready for full-time action in the NHL, but will he be this year? Hunter and Patrick begin the show by continuing their season-in-review series, this time focusing on Brunicke. (1:35) He showed some flashes at the NHL level in nine games, but ultimately wasn’t ready for the big time. After success at the junior and AHL levels, it’s time for him to take the next step. Then, the QMJHL’s Defenseman of the Year, Tommy Bleyl, could be available at 22 for the Penguins in about a week, so should he be the pick? (15:00) They dive into one of the more exciting prospects at this year’s draft. Finally, Taylor Gauthier re-signed this week to a one-year deal, and the ECHL standout will look to take the leap to the AHL next season. (25:30)

JP Hurlbert had a breakout year with the Kamloops Blazers, and if he’s available at 22, that could be the Penguins’ pick. Hunter and Patrick continue their pre-draft profile series today by looking at Kamloops Blazers’ forward, and teammate of Penguins’ prospect Harrison Brunicke, JP Hurlbert. (1:42) A shifty forward with a scoring touch could provide the Penguins’ prospect pool with another skilled asset, should he be available at 22. Then, the Penguins made a small trade over the weekend, sending Emil Pieniniemi to Florida in exchange for Oliver Okuliar. (13:30) The Penguins are reportedly working toward a contract with Okuliar after a rocky relationship with Pieniniemi this past season. Finally, former Penguin Jordan Staal is a Stanley Cup champion once again, and they give their thoughts on what was a great final series. (21:00)
