Locked On Pirates - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Pirates

Welcome to the first episode of Locked On Pirates in 2024 folks.

2023 was a massive year and host Ethan Smith thanks you all, but its back to business.

The Pirates have done some adding this off-season, but things have been rather quiet since re-signing Andrew McCutchen a few weeks ago. Ethan poses the question though, not if, but when do the Pirates make their next off-season move?

Also, the outfield saw the addition of Edward Olivares, but should the Pirates be done adding to the outfield group? Should they add another starter to sure up the rotation for good in 2024?

Finally, its a new year which means we all have our thoughts on how 2024 will be for the Pirates. What are some New Year's resolutions the team should have and how does Ethan feel about the team right now?

All of that and more on today's episode of Locked On Pirates.

The "An Eye at the Future" series concludes today on Locked On Pirates.

On today's show, host Ethan Smith discusses the outfield of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

For starters, we know Bryan Reynolds will likely occupy left field and Jack Suwinski will likely man center field primarily, but other questions arise about right field and the options the Pirates have available. Do they go with Joshua Palacios? Maybe the newly acquired Edward Olivares? How about Connor Joe, or even a player who could rise out of the minors?

Ethan talks about that, what the outfield means for this team in '24 and how the group could take shape by season's end this upcoming year.

The "An Eye at the Future" series continues today on Locked On Pirates!

Host Ethan Smith has already talked about the stacked farm system for starting pitching, questions at 1B, the plethora of young players at 2B, but now he moves to the left side of the infield, the part of the field for Pirates fans that will be getting the most eyes for the next half decade.

Ke'Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz are two young, outstanding players for the Pirates organization, but just how far can each of them take the club and what should their expectations be going into 2024 and beyond?

We talk about that on today's show.

Welcome back to Locked On Pirates!

Today, host Ethan Smith discusses the rumor mill a bit, talking about Dylan Cease and the Sox's high asking price, some of Miami's young controllable pitchers potentially being available and how the Pirates could factor into both of those rumors.

Also, free agency has some decent pitching available still, so should the Pirates be done adding pitching?

Finally, Cutch is back and he wants to win. Being in a role model role, how much will that help the Pirates young players as they continue to climb the ladder?

Folks, I've been calling for this signing for the entire off-season and it happened Monday, as the Pirates signed veteran left-hander and 2022 All-Star Martin Perez, adding another veteran to the starting pitching staff.

Does this move ignite new life into the 2024 rotation? Are the Pirates done adding arms or is there more work to be done? What's the rotation look like now? We try and answer those questions today w/ Ethan Smith being joined by Gary Morgan.

Also, it appears clear that Andrew McCutchen will return for 2024, but what exactly will his role be, how much will he play and what else could we expect from him next season?

Tons of news came our way Tuesday.

The biggest came internally on the roster as young, up and coming catcher Endy Rodriguez is slated to have UCL surgery and will miss the entirety of the 2024 season. Pair that with the Johan Oviedo news we received earlier this off-season, and it may be time to evaluate the Pirates goals differently for next season.

Along with that, the Pirates made another signing, bringing in Rowdy Tellez on a major league deal. Tellez's performance in 2023 left much to be desired, but if he can rekindle some of his 2022 form, did the Pirates find a cost effective diamond in the rough?

Finally, it was announced Wednesday that the Pirates will now be apart of SportsNet Pittsburgh alongside the Pittsburgh Penguins. What does this mean moving forward and what dots need connected to fully understand the way we'll watch the Pirates short-term?

On today's episode of Locked On Pirates, host Ethan Smith is joined by Gary Morgan in the continuation of the "An Eye at the Future" series.

Today is all about the second base position for the Pirates, a position that will likely have 2024 Spring Training's most heated battle for rights to be the starter. With players like Liover Peguero, Nick Gonzales, Ji-hwan Bae and Jared Triolo all viable options for the position, what does each guy offer the Pirates and who ultimately wins the starting job out of spring?

And when talking about second base, you have to talk about Termarr Johnson? Is he the be all end all at the position or will someone step up before he arrives? All of that and more on today's episode of Locked On Pirates.

Late Tuesday night, we finally got some encouraging off-season news out of Pittsburgh as they traded for LHP Marco Gonzales from the Atlanta Braves for a PTBNL and cash considerations.

Host Ethan Smith breaks down the move, why its another stab at a soft throwing lefty, why the Pirates will continue to add to the rotation and the impact Gonzales could have in 2024.

Also, the Rule 5 Draft concluded without much fuss from Pirates fans, but they did add Seth Beer. Is Beer depth in the system or could he impact the 1B spot for the Pirates in 2024?

Finally, the draft lottery was won by the Cleveland Guardians last night, with the Pirates slotting in at No. 9 overall in the 2024 Draft. Who do Jim Callis & Johnathan Mayo think the Pirates take at No. 9 in their very early top-10 mock draft?
