Locked On Raptors - Daily Podcast On The Toronto Raptors

In Episode 1226, Sean Woodley by Oren Weisfeld (Complex) to kick off a series of shows set to drop while he's away on vacation with a look at the first of five great heartbreaks in Toronto Raptors history that'll be discussed in the coming weeks: the day DeMar DeRozan was traded for Kawhi Leonard. Oren details while the trade of DeRozan hit him so hard when it first happened, as well as how long it took for him to fully buy into the Leonard trade. Plus, they look back at DeRozan's emotional return to Toronto, and how Oren's philosophy on superstar deals has totally changed in the four-plus years since the trade and how it's affected his thoughts on the potential of the Raptors trading for Kevin Durant at any cost.

In Episode 1225, Sean Woodley is joined by Jamar Hinds (Raptors Republic) to discuss their biggest concerns about the Toronto Raptors heading into the 2022-23 NBA season. Off the top, they chat about the complicated dynamics at play on a team with six core pieces, five of whom are going to be on the search for plenty of offensive touches, and whether the challenge of dispersing those touches in a way that keeps everyone happy could be a risk to the overall vibes of the team. In particular, how might Gary Trent Jr. and OG Anunoby cope with being the fourth and fifth options? And is there a pathway to keeping everyone happy this season, perhaps beginning with Fred VanVleey adapting his role to become more of a table-setter than shot-taker? Next, Sean and Jamar dig into the issue of minutes management. Will Nick Nurse be able to keep Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam and Scottie Barnes from being near the top of the league in workload again with some newfound depth? And will the Raptors approach to the regular season change from the balls-to-the-wall approach they look to 2021-22? Lastly, they discuss the issue of three-point shooting, how much improvement the team can count on, and whether the half court offense as a whole can tick up from its 26th-ranked status last year. If so, will the defense get a little more conservative?

In Episode 1224, Sean Woodley goes solo to react to the signing of Juancho Hernangomez aka Bo Cruz to power rank the 20 players the Raptors are now projected to bring to training camp in September. Off the top, Sean ranks the six core players on the team: Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, Scottie Barnes, OG Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa and Gary Trent Jr. Next, Sean digs into the surefire bench rotation pieces that should round out a very sound nine-man rotation: Chris Boucher, Otto Porter Jr. and Thad Young. Will that trio be the key to Nick Nurse being a little more conservative with the minutes totals for his star players? Next, Sean assesses where the guys on the fringes of the rotation -- Khem Birch, Justin Champagnie, Dalano Banton and Malachi Flynn -- sit in the franchise hierarchy, before rounding out the show with a look at the guys who will likely spend a good chunk of time with Raptors 905 in the G-League, and sizing up the battle for what will likely be one roster spot between four players.

In Episode 1223, Sean Woodley is joined by Freddie Rivas (The Pick-up, Confederacy of Dunks) to discuss three things they're each excited to watch once the 2022-23 Toronto Raptors hit the floor in the fall. Off the top, Freddie digs into why he's so thrilled to watch the Raptors core pieces finally play together for more than just short bursts of time, after the starting five managed to play just 21 games together over the whole of 2021-22. Meanwhile, Sean is excited to watch another season of Scottie Barnes, point blank, period. Next, Freddie digs into the joy of watching the Raptors play gimmicky basketball, as the two discuss the ways in which the Raptors might layer more differing gameplans and play styles into their day-to-day now that the team is a little deeper and loaded with some more complementary skills. Sean, also talks about why he's excited to watch the Raptors go toe-to-toe with the East's heavy hitters, as they've done quite admirably in recent years. Lastly, Freddie details why he's getting Bench Mob-adjacent vibes from this team, while Sean looks at the Raptors performance in crunch time last season, and wonders if it could be a sign of things to come in close games once again in 2022-23.

In Episode 1222, Sean Woodley is joined by Amit Mann (Yahoo! Sports Canada) to discuss the Toronto Raptors offseason to date and whether they'd deem it a success, even if they don't pull off a trade for Kevin Durant. Off the top they dig into why the addition of Otto Porter Jr. was such a perfect move for this team considering their playing style and need for shooting. Next, they dig into the Fred VanVleet extension situation, how the lack of an extension despite previous reporting is probably caught up in the Kevin Durant saga, and whether it would be a failure for the Raptors to not have him inked to a new deal before the summer concludes. Plus, should the Raptors have an internal walkaway date from the Kevin Durant trade negotiations in the interest of heading into the season without too much uncertainty hanging over the team? Lastly, Sean and Amit discuss whether there are other things they'd like to see the Raptors address, whether internal development is actually the most likely avenue for them to address team needs, and talk about whether it's disapppointing that a seemingly quiet offseason has turned dramatic ever since the KD trade demand.

In Episode 1221, Sean Woodey is joined by Jake Fischer (Bleacher Report, Please Don't Aggregate This, Built to Lose) to discuss the latest in the Kevin Durant trade saga and where the Toronto Raptors are sitting as KD's request to be dealt from the Brooklyn Nets lingers on. Off the top, they discuss the stalemate that seems to be forming between Durant, the Nets, and the rest of the league as Brooklyn waits for a team to meet their sky high asking price to part with the former MVP. Where do the Raptors find themselves in the conversations? Have they made their best offer to Brooklyn? And how motivated are they to go all-in for Durant when the prospect of internal development is still very much on the table. Next, Sean chats with Jake about the challenge of getting information out of a team like the Raptors that doesn't leak much, and why they are known to be one of the more busy teams in trade talks around the league. Lastly, will the wild trade market that is seeing boat loads of picks as the common return for stars ever course-correct? All that and more today with Jake Fischer, the People's Insider.

In Episode 1220, Sean Woodley is joined by Locked On Celtics host John Karalis to discuss the state of the Eastern Conference after most of the off-season maneuvering has been completed (minus the impending Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell trades) and try to sort out where the Toronto Raptors fit into the hierarchy of the conference the Boston Celtics won last season. Off the top, they talk about the contender class. Are the Celtics the obvious favourites? Or did the Philadelphia 76ers off-season moves vault them into favourite status? Plus, are the Milwaukee Bucks being slept on? And are the Miami Heat headed towards some regression? Next, John details just how annoying he finds the general good of the Raptors to be, as both he and Sean declare the Raptors to be, at minimum, locks to make the East's top-six, with some room to potentially slide into the home court conversation if the Heat falter. Plus, which teams on the outside of last year's play-in picture stand the best chance of climbing into the playoff conversation? And which of the Atlanta Hawks or the Cleveland Cavaliers is more likely to join the East's elite ranks?

In Episode 1219, Sean Woodley goes solo to answer some listener questions about the Toronto Raptors and what things could look like for them in the upcoming 2022-23 season. Off the top, Sean digs into a great question about the players the Raptors should be expecting leaps from next season, and in particular two guys whose leaps are going to be essential if the team wants to continue its upward trajectory: Scottie Barnes, and Precious Achiuwa. Next, Sean tackles a question about a particularly weird possible lineup combo that could get some major run next season, and spins off into a discussion of all the delightful strange lineups Toronto's versatile and complimentary nine-man rotation should make possible. Lastly, Sean talks about whether there are any alternative team names he'd like to see the Raptors adopt if they were to abandon the dinosaur theme, jersey designs he'd like to see from the next round of Raps City Edition uniforms, and which type of hat most suits each member of the Raptors' starting five.

In Episode 1218, Sean Woodley goes solo to field some mailbag questions about the Toronto Raptors past, present and future. Off the top, Sean examines with Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers is someone the team should circle back on now that the off-season has cooled down. Could he be the center the Raptors have purportedly being poking around for? Or is he a little too far below the level of Deandre Ayton and Rudy Gobert to be worth the investment? Are the Raptors better off just rolling with Precious Achiuwa as their primary big man? Next, Sean talks about how bullish he is on the 2022-23 Raptors' ability to be a regular season wins machine as well as how the minutes are likely to be allocated across all five positions. Lastly, Sean is tasked with plucking three players from Raptors history and adding them to the roster of today, before addressing a question about the Raptors fandom as a whole.

In Episode 1217, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob (Raptors.com) to react to the Toronto Raptors' final Vegas Summer League game, discuss Malachi Flynn's 73-point game in a Pro-Am over the weekend and whether he has a role on next year's Raptors, and discuss the idea of Donovan Mitchell on the Raptors. Off the top, Sean and Big V give their final assessments of a 4-1 Summer League run for the Raptors, which they don't think changed the big picture of the Raptors all that much. Christian Koloko looked as stout defensive as he looked raw offensively, just as was expected; Dalano Banton expanded his game in an interesting way, and Jeff Dowtin might compete for a two-way deal and a camp invite after a strong showing -- but there's very little that happened that changes the Raptors' day one plans, which will heavily feature a tough-to-break-into nine-man rotation of established guys, health provided. Next, Sean and Vivek react to Malachi Flynn putting up 73 in a game at Jamal Crawford's Pro-Am event out in Washington State, and whether it changes anything about his role with the team going into next season. Sean sort of melts down a little bit in this section. Lastly, Sean and V talk about Donovan Mitchell, his theoretical fit on the Raptors, and whether they'd entertain a deal for Mitchell involving OG Anunoby going out the other way.
