Locked On Raptors - Daily Podcast On The Toronto Raptors

In Episode 1216, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl (DIME, Yahoo Sports Canada) to talk about the Toronto Raptors signing forward Justin Champagnie to a two-year contract, and dig into her biggest takeaways after a week on the ground in Vegas covering the Raptors. Off the top, they react to the Champagnie signing, and dig into why they think he stands a great chance of landing a rotation job at some point next season thanks to his inherent Raptorsiness. Next, they dig into Katie's biggest takeaways from Summer League, including thoughts on Dalano Banton's growth even in just the year since his first trip through Summer League, and why the surprise play of Jeff Dowtin is a great story, though likely not one that will impact the Raptors' 2022-23 roster. Lastly, Sean grills Katie with some rapid fire Vegas-related questions, including: what was the strangest NBA interaction she had while there? What's her casino game of choice? And what was the best and worst thing she ate while down there. It's a fun show!

In Episode 1215, Sean Woodley goes solo to react to the Toronto Raptors second Summer League game -- a 93-83 loss to the Chicago Bulls -- before examining the rumours that Donovan Mitchell could be on his way out of Utah for the right price, and why the Raptors should not be the team to pay it. Off the top, Sean discusses Dalano Banton's 18-point, five-assist effort and why his future role with the Raptors is finally starting to come into view. Next, Sean offers thoughts on Christian Koloko's second appearance in Vegas, where the gulf between his defensive and offensive ability has been proven to be quite stark as he gets his NBA career started. Plus, DJ Wilson's struggles, Jeff Dowtin making a push for the Raptors' second two-way spot, and more. Lastly, Sean digs into the rumours that Donovan Mitchell could be on his way out of Utah if the Jazz get the right offer, and why the Raptors should stay out of a potential bidding war with a team like the New York Knicks, despite having the players on hand to make a compelling offer for the Jazz' All-Star guard.

In Episode 1214, Sean Woodley goes solo to talk about what a Deandre Ayton deal with the Indiana Pacers would mean for the Toronto Raptors pursuit of a Kevin Durant trade, and why would it be a good development for those hoping the Raptors can land the former MVP. Sean digs into why it would leave the Raptors in a clear position of power in the Durant sweepstakes, taking away one of the prime avenues by which the Suns could land Durant, and leaving Toronto with the best offer likely to be on the table for KD -- without having to even include Scottie Barnes in a deal. Next, Sean takes a look at the Raptors' outlook for 2022-23 in the event they do not land KD, and why he's bullish on the Raptors being in the hunt for a top-four seed with a much deeper roster that should see a lot of internal development from year-to-year as well. Lastly, Sean examines the incoming rule changes for the NBA, including the death of the take foul (which should benefit a transition-heavy team like the Raptors more than most), the permanent institution of the play-in tournament, and the potential in-season tournament reportedly on the horizon for 2023-24.

In Episode 1213, Sean Woodley is joined by Vivek Jacob to recap the Toronto Raptors' 97-77 win over the Philadelphia 76ers in their first taste of Las Vegas Summer League action on Saturday. Off the top, they share their biggest takeaways following Christian Koloko's debut with the team, in which he scored 12 points while also collecting three steals and three blocks. His offense has a long way to come along, but his mobility was a real stand-out. Next, they discuss the Raptors signing DJ Wilson to a standard NBA deal, and examine how his inclusion could change things in the battle for the Raptors; final roster spot. Could Wilson nudge out someone like Justin Champagnie or Svi Mykhailiuk? Or is he at long odds to make a team that now has four centers on the roster. Lastly, they about Dalano Banton's big effort in the LVSL opener, and try to determine which back end roster player stands the best chance of nudging into the regular rotation this coming season as the 10th man behind Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, OG Anunoby, Gary Trent Jr., Scottie Barnes, Precious Achiuwa, Otto Porter Jr., Thad Young and Chris Boucher.

In Episode 1212, Sean Woodley goes solo to answer a bucket full of a mailbag questions about Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant and the Toronto Raptors' reported pursuit if the two-time Finals MVP. Off the top, Sean digs into the potential concerns about Durant looking to ask out of Toronto before the 4 years on his contract are up, and whether a verbal commitment from KD to stick around for the life of his contract would change the calculus on what the Raptors should be willing to part with. Next, Sean answers a question about the emotional toll that may or not be exacted on the players rumoured to be sent out for Kevin Durant in a deal, as well as the potential for the Raptors to be invovled in the KD sweepstakes as a third team that lands Deandre Ayton from the Phoenix Suns -- something that becomes a little less likely as the Indiana Pacers reported Ayton interest ratchets up. Lastly, Sean discusses who the 5th starter would be in the event Precious Achiuwa, OG anunoby and Gary Trent Jr. are the price of landing KD, whether the Raptors would load manage the 34-year-old, and what his favourite preparations of Kraft Dinner are.

In Episode 1211, Sean Woodley is joined by Adam Armbrecht (Locked On Nets) for a Locked On crossover episode to discuss the state of the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets franchises as they theoretically dive into Kevin Durant trade talks. Off the top, Adam grills Sean on where the Raptors are positioned in a KD negotiation, and whether there is any world in which the Raptors would part with Scottie Barnes to get a KD deal done. Unforunately for Nets fans, that seems super unlikely at the moment. Next, Sean picks Adam's brain on whether the Nets are in a position of power seeing as they currently have a Top-5 player on the trade block and can demand an exorbident asking price, or if they're actually in a bind because of the low number of realistic landing spots for the former MVP. Will the Nets have to settle for a deal below their stated asking price? Could they even bring Durant and Kyrie Irving back next season if they don't get the deal they want? Lastly, Sean and Adam go back and forth in a mock trade negotiation to see if there is any common ground to be reached. It's a tough one to iron out, but they try their darndest!

In Episode 1210, Sean Woodley is joined by William Lou (The Raptors Show, Sportsnet 590 The Fan) to talk about the case for the Toronto Raptors ponying up and going all-in to acquire Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant, even if it costs Scottie Barnes or Pascal Siakam. Off the top, they dig into how far they'd go in negotiations to land KD, with the one inescapable fact of it all being that... it's Kevin Durant. Is it worth giving up Scottie Barnes and all the potential he has? Or is the sure thing that is Durant worth the gamble -- especially if he can moved later in his contract for at least some form of return if things don't work out in the early days of his contract. Next, Sean and Will talk about the idea of including Precious Achiuwa in an OG Anunoby, Gary Trent Jr. and draft picks package, and whether it would be a dealbreaker to trade three valuable pieces for one. Counterpoint: it's Kevin Durant. Lastly, Sean picks Will's brain on the Raptors' off-season moves, and why keeping Thad Young and Chris Boucher while adding Otto Porter Jr. sets the Raptors up to hit the ground running the event the team they have today is the one they roll out on opening night. Somehow that segment spirals into a Kevin Durant conversation as well, because these are the times we live in. It's Kevin Durant, man.

In Episode 1209, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl (DIME, Basketball Feelings) to discuss the potential downsides of the Toronto Raptors trading for disgruntled Brooklyn Nets star Kevin Durant, before taking a look at the Raptors' Summer League roster. Off the top, Sean and Katie talk about the risks involved with a Durant trade, and why any comparisons to the plunge Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster took in acquiring Kawhi Leonard from the San Antonio Spurs simply don't compute. Next, they talk about whether the Raptors should be wary of becoming known as the franchise that will quickly ship off beloved franchise icons in the interest of superstar acquisitions. Doing it once with DeMar DeRozan made some sense and led to a championship -- but is it worth gaining that reputation even further for a KD deal, especially if it comes at the cost of one of Scottie Barnes or Pascal Siakam? Lastly, Sean and Katie take a look at the Vegas Summer League roster the Raptors announced on Monday, which includes some fun names like Dalano Banton, Justin Champagnie, DJ Wilson and CEBL standout Christian Vital, but also includes Rodions Kurucs, whose history of domestic violence combined with his very clear lack of NBA-level talent is a puzzling and disappointing inclusion on the team.

Be sure to read Katie's piece making the case against a KD trade for the Raptors here: https://uproxx.com/dimemag/toronto-raptors-kevin-durant-nba-trade-rumors/

In Episode 1208, Sean Woodley and Vivek Jacob (Raptors.com) discuss the ongoing Kevin Durant saga and some possible iterations of a deal in which the Toronto Raptors could land the Brooklyn Nets' star, perhaps without parting with either of Scottie Barnes or Pascal Siakam. Off the top, they discuss the position of strength the Raptors find themselves in, with no pressure to pull off a deal unless they can get the exact right deal that keeps both a short-term title window and long-term sustainability on the table. Next, they discuss which theorized trade framework would leave behind the best team for the Raptors to compete with for a title in the immediate future -- a deal centered around Scottie Barnes and likely Gary Trent Jr., a deal with Pascal Siakam as the main outgoing piece, or a deal based on the duo of OG Anunoby and Trent? Lastly, Sean and Vivek examine the possibility of the Raptors jumping in as the third team in a Nets / Phoenix Suns trade for Durant, in which they include some pieces and receive Deandre Ayton, who is clearly talented, but is the fit right? It's Kevin Durant Week on the podcast, baby! Buckle up.

In Episode 1207, Sean Woodley goes solo to break down the Toronto Raptors re-signing forwards Chris Boucher and Thad Young, inking forward Otto Porter Jr. to a two-year contract, and examine whether the possibility still exists for the Raptors to trade for one of Kevin Durant or Deandre Ayton from the Brooklyn Nets or Phoenix Suns. Off the top, Sean talks about the Boucher and Young deals, which weren't terribly surprising but great to see nonetheless, as they should have been the front office's top priorities coming into the off-season. Next, Sean talks about the Otto Porter Jr. addition as he jumps shit from the Golden State Warriors, and why if he is the final addition to next season's roster, that is a perfectly fine place for the still growing Raptors to be. Lastly, Sean talks about the Kevin Durant trade demand, why he would not part with Scottie Barnes to get KD in the door, and whether Deandre Ayton could still be a stealthy possibility for the Raptors to land if the market bares out in a favourable way.
