Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

Lots of rumors continues to swirl around the New Orleans Saints and Sean Payton. Payton, who has several years left on his contract as the Saints' head coach is rumored to be potentially mulling a mini-retirement. Why these reports are extraneous until they aren't any longer.

If Sean Payton did end up leaving, what would happen next for the New Orleans Saints? Two excellent coaching candidates to consider in defensive coordinator Dennis Allen and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. Why both would be solid options and how a potential ripple effect could get started if Payton were to depart.

An early look at Mock Draft Monday: going wide receiver in this draft is very important for the future of the New Orleans Saints offense. Why Alabama's Jameson Williams, despite his injury, could be exactly what the New Orleans Saints need.

Should the New Orleans Saints lose defensive coordinator Dennis Allen to one of the NFL's open head coaching positions, they have two excellent in-house options to take over the role. Ryan Nielsen and Kris Richard both have what it takes to carry on the success of Allen's defense and add their own spin and fire to the position. If the Saints choose to go out of the facility to fill the spot, they could look to an old friend of head coach Sean Payton's in former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer.

Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill both exceeded expectations in 2021, but one finite detail can be missed about Winston's passing distribution that speak positively of his decision-making, which was previously in question. How targeting players at all positions impacts our read on Winston's development.

Along with Dennis Allen, Jeff Ireland has also drawn interest from the Chicago Bears. With the New York Giants having hired their GM in Joe Shoen, the pool for Chicago thins with one less top candidate. How this impact New Orleans. Meanwhile, across the division, the Carolina Panthers have hired Ben McAdoo to fill their offensive coordinator position and confidence in Charlotte is not high. Saints add WRs Jalen McCleskey and Kirk Merritt ahead of free agency.

The New Orleans Saints and Alvin Kamara were expected to be a dominant run team going into 2021, but with a lack of availability along the offensive line and in tandem with Kamara, too many roles were impacted to allow the ground game to keep its early season steam.

Mark Ingram, Tony Jones Jr, and Ty Montgomery all helped as much as they could behind Alvin Kamara, but were limited by injuries, illness, and more. Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston were top-four rushers for the team. Should the Saints have maintained Latavius Murray at his price tag?

Why running back is a sneaky position to watch in this year's draft for the New Orleans Saints. Georgia's James Cook, Iowa State's Breece Hall, and others should all be on the Saints radar as they look to rebuild their strength at running back along with the offensive line.

The New Orleans Saints named Jameis Winston their starting quarterback ahead of the 2021 NFL season following his offseason QB competition with Taysom Hill. After that, all the narratives focused on which QB was the right choice, often times grounded in the projected failed either or both. Turns out, both quarterbacks would get starting time due to the enormously complicated season faced by the Saints. And in each of their own rights, Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill exceeded expectations.

As for 2022, there's a chance that both Jameis and Taysom are back int he facility, or the Saints could target one of the big names that might become available via trade. Russell Wilson, Derek Carr, Jimmy Garoppolo and others could all be options for New Orleans. And while they'll turn every stone and inspect every possibility over the offseason - all eyes will be on what's next for the Saints.

What's the difference between unrestricted, restricted, exclusive rights, and street free agents? Mid-week fundamentals breaks down everything you need to know about free agent contract ahead of the offseason.

The New Orleans Saints will be looking for solutions at the quarterback position. They could look to reunite with Jameis Winston or trade for other proven commodities like Russell Wilson and Derek Carr. But the Saints value on draft picks will be the potential deciding factor.

If the Saints do make a move for Russell Wilson, it would likely run them at least a couple of first-round picks. So if they went that route, they could still land an immediate impact WR in the second day of the NFL Draft. John Metchie of Alabama and Wan'Dale Robinson of Kentucky could be interesting options to pair with Wilson due to his previous success with players of similar skillsets.

Is there more than just smoke around the Sean Payton offseason chatter? Why we should be paying attention to it and what could be the solution if the unexpected happens. Demario Davis and JT Gray both named to All-Pro lists, but Saints brass not getting the head coaching and general manager attention that was expected.

The New Orleans Saints will draft 18th in the NFL Draft this season (for now) giving them a ton of options where they could address key positions. Quarterback, offensive line, and of course, wide receiver. Ohio State University has put out two phenomenal options in Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson. Is Wilson the best fit? Locked On NFL Draft sends him to the Saints in their latest mock draft.

Locked On Saints 7-round mock draft explores the scenario in which the Saints draft offensive line first round. Which potential pass catchers could have an immediate impact if drafted on the day two of the NFL Draft? Purdue's David Bell and Ohio State's Jeremy Ruckert should be atop those lists.

Will Alabama's Jameson Williams be a top WR prospect still? How the Saints receiver options go deep into day three and how the deepest parts of this draft in the trenches work to the favor of the New Orleans Saints.

The New Orleans Saints have been connected very often to wide receivers over the course of the offseason so far, especially in the draft. Alabama WR Treylon Burks has been a popular name, but so too have the Ohio State duo of Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, along with Purdue's David Bell and other names. But it's not limited to wideouts, offensive line and quarterbacks have been a popular pick as well. The most trendy pick? Ole Miss' Matt Corrall

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Denis Allen still hasn't gotten much attention with all of the open head coaching positions around the NFL, but could that change soon depending on the Minnesota Vikings GM search? And could there be another suitor at a later time? If Allen goes, the potential exodus of defensive coaches could be challenging for the Saints to overcome.

In case you missed it, rounding up all the biggest New Orleans Saints stories of the week. Blake Bortles, Kawaan Baker, Malcolm Roach, and 11 others return on future/reserve deals. Jeff Ireland has his interview scheduled with the Chicago Bears for their open GM position, and Alabama's Jameson Williams declares for the 2022 NFL Draft.

Pending injury rehab, the New Orleans Saints should reunite with QB Jameis Winston. The Saints may not be able to land Russell Wilson or Aaron Rodgers, but they may have who they need in their sights already. Why reuniting with Jameis Winston would be wise form a roster building, culture building, and financial standpoint.

While many seem to expect Terron Armstead to be out of New Orleans this offseason, there is one key factor that could keep him around with some other high-priority free agents like Marcus Williams, Kwon Alexander, and Deonte Harty.

A rapid-fire look at each and every New Orleans Saints free agent form drafted players like Tre'Quan Smith to in-season additions like Jalyn Holmes and highly respected players who's season ended too quickly like Jalen Dalton.

The New Orleans Saints defied the odds in 2021, but looking ahead to 2022, the offensive struggles cannot persist. Particularly in the passing game. Rookie cornerback Pauslon Adebo and the Saints' retooling of the cornerback position should be an indication of how impactful the team can be if they do focus on this high-value position, even if Michael Thomas is expected to return from his injury.

Alabama Wide Receiver Jameson Williams was easily the top WR on many NFL Draft evaluator boards. But now that he's suffered an ACL injury, it could potentially impact the availability of other top wideout prospects like Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Drake London, and Treylon Burks.

With the Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, and Denver Broncos all in the head coaching search, could the Saints lose defensive coordinator Dennis Allen this offseason? He and assistant GM/director of college scouting Jeff Ireland should be hot names in the searches around the NFL following Black Monday and the coach firings around the league.

While the rest of the NFL is focused on coaches being fired amidst Black Monday, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is already preparing for the 2022 season, his 16th in the Big Easy. On the heels of one of the most unprecedented seasons, Payton led the Saints to a 9-8 record despite losing their Hall Of Fame quarterback in Drew Brees, digging themselves out of their +$100M salary cap deficit, having personnel limited throughout the season to the point in which they set the NFL record for most starters in a season, plus COVID issues and being relocated by Hurricane Ida. An impressive resume for a head coach that has matched the criteria for coach of the year on many occasions. This year, he should not be overlooked.

No coach has been selected for this award with single digit wins since Bruce Arians in 2012, taking over for Chuck Pagano and leading the team to a 9-3 playoff run. Back in 1990 Jimmy Johnson rebounded the hapless 1-15 Dallas Cowboys to a 7-9 season and was also given the honor. Could Coach Payton be the next?

Also in this episode: Taysom Hill will undergo offseason procedures for lisfranc injury, further complicating the Saints quarterback conversation headed into 2022. They also bring back eight players on future/reserve contracts helping to fill out the 90-man training camp roster for next season.
