Locked On Saints - Daily Podcast On The New Orleans Saints

New Orleans Saints training camp is right around the corner, so John Hendrix of Saints New Network joins today's episode of Locked On Saints.

First, Ross and John break down everything you need to know around Michael Thomas' timetable and the young wideouts on the roster who will need to step up and produce in the All-Pro's absence. Tre'Quan Smith made his name as a deep threat on the outside in college, now he'll be asked to show he can still operate downfield. Marquez Callaway flashed in big moments last season, he now has the chance to show he's more than just a flash in the pan. Meanwhile, more players on the market remain that could be impactful for the Saints. Even though they signed Chris Hogan, names like Alshon Jeffrey, Kenny Stills, and more are still available.

John and Ross then discuss the value of the recent Brian Poole signing. Even though Poole bring value to a team that may need to ask Patrick Robinson to move from the slot to outside, the Saints shouldn't be done at the position with boundary corners still available for pursuit.

Finally, John breaks down what he's excited to see on the offense and defensive sides of the ball in camp as well as under-the-radar storylines to watch. The quarterback battle between Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill may headline camp, but the wide receiver position, Adam Trautman's ascension atop his position group, and several talented young names on defense are worth your attention. Along with a QB battle, there will also be a punter battle to enjoy between Blake Gillikin and Nolan Cooney.

From the signal callers to the special teamers, Saints camp in no way lacks of intrigue.

The New Orleans Saints have a clear need at cornerback opposite from, and possibly temporarily in place of, Marshon Lattimore. This weekend, they signed former New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons cornerback Brian Poole. Here's how he fits into the Saints secondary, could shake it up, and how the signing could affect a versatile chess piece like C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Even with the signing of Poole, the Saints may still be in the market for an outside cornerback. With Steven Nelson having now signed with the Philadelphia Eagles,, which corners are still on the market? Dre Kirkpatrick has already been brought in, but how about a young option like Gareon Conley? Still some potential out there to address a position of need with a career outside cornerback.

Michael Thomas will be unavailable for the opening of the 2021 season, but for how long? We now have a timeline to track, as well as further details on exactly how things went down that led to the receiver's ankle surgery not happening until June. Who steps up in his stead?

Big news out of the New Orleans Saints facility with Michael Thomas expected to miss the start of the 2021 NFL season. Host Ross Jackson breaks down the timeline, what happened, and what's next in today's Locked On Saints.

Which free agent options the New Orleans Saints could pursue to pacify the loss of Michael Thomas to start the season? The key will be focusing on adding the WR core as opposed to trying to replace MT. Options like Josh Gordon and Larry Fitzgerald are "what if's" based on availability. But could Alshon Jeffrey or Kenny Stills be an option?

The Saints shouldn't limit themselves to the free agent market. They have the draft capital and money to pursue trade options as well. Patriots WR N'Keal Harry's fracture relationship in Foxboro could be a cheap price to pay for the Saints. Chicago Bears WR Anthony Miller has been rumored to be on the market, and an established relationship with the Miami Dolphins could also come in handy.

Breaking down the New Orleans Saints edge rusher position. Who they lost over the offseason, who they've added, who returns for camp, and finally, a look at what the position's depth chart might be in 2021.

There's a chance that the Saints' answer at DT with David Onyemata out for six games, may be on the roster already just at a different position. Could Tanoh Kpassagnon be the guy?

News and notes to catch up on: The Superdome gets it's name, Kwon Alexander's visit seems to have concluded, and Ceedy Duce likes the idea of Xavien Howard to New Orleans.

Linebacker Kwon Alexander is reportedly visiting the New Orleans Saints to see if a possible reunion could take place. What factors will play a part in the decision, what a return would mean for the team, and how it impacts the young linebackers Pete Werner and Zack Baun the Saints have invested day two draft picks to add.

Another free agent option has been cleared for football activities with DT Kawann Baker. Why he would and would not make sense for the New Orleans Saints if they look to the free agent market to fill in the gap left in David Onyemata's suspension.

Mid-week fundamentals takes a look at DVOA, what it means, how to read it, and what specifics can be gleaned regarding the where the Saints have the biggest needs on the defensive side. Which players were nearly immoveable on the defensive line in 2020 and which defensive back could make all the difference for the Saints in 2021.

Breaking down the news and notes of the day including the retirement of former New Orleans Saints WR Ted Ginn Jr., nerdy numbers that show how unique the Saints have been on defense and how much they've been hurt by penalties, and look at David Onyemata's suspension and what it means for the New Orleans Saints salary cap.

ESPN dove in on how prepared teams are to find success in the next three years. Their projections are kind to the Saints but one major inconsistency doesn't make much sense. Why the Saints' drafting abilities were severely undervalued in this piece.

What if the NFL had an NHL-style expansion draft that allowed you to protect 11 players outside of your most recent draft class? Which five offensive, five defensive, and lone specialist would you protect?
