Locked On SEC – Daily College Football & Basketball Podcast

On today's show, Greg Sankey and the SEC would like to move the Early Signing Day up to the first week of December ahead of conference championship weekend to declutter the month of December, but wouldn't that be even MORE of a burden? Also there's a thought to move the Transfer Portal, to only have it post spring - is that the right move?

We discuss that with our buddy Chris Marler, as we also get his thoughts on the tumultuous offseason for Alabama, as well as a possible 14-team playoff, how hard it will be to win a National Championship moving forward, & more.

We also ask Marler if he could attend ONE Spring Game this year in the SEC, which school would he choose? And we break down the upcoming return of the College Football Video Game, as dozens of big name players are opting in to be included in the game!

On today's show, we discuss the possibility of the CFP management committee discussing the 12-team CFP expanding to a 14-team playoff by 2026, while the SEC & Big10 push for several automatic qualifying bids for their conferences, & much more. It's time to start realizing how much more difficult it will become to win a National Championship. Gone are the days of the BCS where all you needed to win was ONE game for a title, now you'll need to win three or even four!

We also run through ESPN's piece breaking down the "Biggest Spring Questions" for their Top 25 teams, which includes NINE teams from the SEC. Questions pertain to Georgia rebuilding its secondary, Texas retooling their passing game, Ole Miss transitioning with a ton of transfers, and more.

And we go Around The Conference as Alabama ousts the voice of the Crimson Tide Eli Gold, as he says he's still healthy and still wants to work. Also, it sounds like Georgia State is eyeing some Georgia assistants for their head coaching job, and Johnny Manziel has some interesting comments regarding his time at Texas A&M.

On today's show - the College Football Playoff goes with the 5 plus 7 model for the 12-team playoff, what does it mean for the SEC? How many teams can the SEC regularly get into the playoff? The playoff will automatically move the highest-ranked conference champions to the Top 5, is that the best approach? What if the SEC has multiple 11-1 and 10-2 teams? Shouldn't some of them be ahead of a three-loss Big12 or ACC champion?

Also, we run through the latest news Around The Conference as Georgia football sets a date for their G-Day Spring Game, Kalen DeBoer adds a big piece through the transfer portal in Michigan safety Keon Sabb, while Bama announces they've finalized their co-offensive coordinator moves.

And we get you caught up on Paul Finebaum's thoughts on which SEC teams can make the playoff in 2024, and Daniel Jeremiah's latest NFL Mock Draft has ten SEC players going in the first round.

Who has higher expectations this upcoming season – Steve Sarkisian or Kalen DeBoer? Obviously both Texas and Alabama are coming off of CFB Playoff appearances. Sark brings back QB Quinn Ewers in Austin, but how difficult will the transition be into the SEC? And for DeBoer taking over for Nick Saban is a tough task, but he did just make it to the Championship Game at Washington, can he keep the dominant run going at Alabama?

Also we get you caught up on assistant coaching news Around The Conference as Auburn's Cadillac Williams jumps to the NFL, Georgia loses their WR coach to the NFL, details of Shawn Elliott's contract leaving a head coaching job to be an assistant back at South Carolina and much more!

And we recap the weekend that was in SEC basketball and the first weekend of SEC baseball!

On today's show, we hit on the latest rumors that the SEC will indeed move towards a nine-game SEC conference schedule very soon. Texas AD Chris Del Conte admitted as much this week, but will we have to wait until 2026, or is it possible that could be changed as soon as next year in 2025?

Also, we hit on the latest assistant coaching moves Around The Conference as Kentucky finalizes their new OC in Bush Hamdan, Kalen DeBoer gives Freddie Roach and Robert Gillespie new titles, South Carolina adds a former head coach to its staff in Georgia State's Shawn Elliott. And other topics include an LSU running back arrested for murder, while Tennessee announces a significantly limited spring game due to stadium construction.

On today's show, we talk all things recruiting with our Recruiting Insider Brian Smith, as we put a cap on the 2024 classes, asking him which schools impressed the most with these classes as Georgia and Alabama finish in the top two, while Texas A&M and LSU made some nice last minute additions.

We also discuss with the Brian the concerns about Kalen DeBoer when it comes to recruiting and how tough that challenge will be at Alabama, with a lot of guys on his staff from areas outside of the south - can he make Alabama the destination for recruits across the region much like Nick Saban did?

And we start to look at how the 2025 classes are shaping up with schools like Georgia, LSU and Oklahoma already doing work. Is recruiting well what could buy Brent Venables more time in the SEC, and is recruiting going to be the undoing for Sam Pittman at Arkansas?

On today's show, Alabama has their new offensive coordinator... again. With Ryan Grubb jumping to the NFL after never coaching a game at Alabama, new head coach Kalen DeBoer will turn in-house to tight ends coach Nick Sheridan who has experience as a play-caller from his time at Indiana, and knows DeBoer very well from their time together at numerous stops. Also, it sounds like Bama will lose assistant Paul Constantine, while it seems like Mizzou will keep Kirby Moore as their OC.

ESPN and the College Football Playoff agree on a new 6-year extension worth an astounding $7.8 billion. Greg Sankey and the SEC are paired up with the Big10, and it seems pretty clear they will want a bigger chunk of the pie when it comes to revenue distribution. But first order of business - the schools need to agree on the new CFB Playoff model and how many conferences and teams get automatic bids.

Lastly, we have a ton of stars from the SEC getting invites to the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, while the SEC Women's basketball Tournament sells out of ticket books already.

Before he even coaches a game, Alabama loses new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb to the NFL as he become the OC for the Seattle Seahawks. Grubb was seen recruiting for the Tide the past few weeks, but in the end he gets to remain in Seattle with his family. Reports also say that offensive line coach Scott Huff will follow him to the Seahawks, which leaves two big holes for new head coach Kalen DeBoer at Bama.

So where does the Tide go from here? They could stay in house, and promote within with several candidates like WR coach JaMarcus Shepard or TE coach Nick Sheridan. Some have even floated the idea of Deboer naming himself the new offensive coordinator. But a lot of signs point to the Tide targeting Mizzou OC Kirby Moore who was outstanding last year for the Tigers, and he worked with DeBoer at Fresno State.

We also touch on some of the other news Around the Conference as Kentucky targets a Boise State assistant as their next OC, while Tennessee loses their running backs coach, and Auburn sets a date for their Spring Game.
