Locked On Sharks - Daily Podcast On The San Jose Sharks

After the 2024 NHL Draft, Mike Grier and the San Jose Sharks have built one of the best prospect pools in the entire league. Sebastian High of Locked on NHL Prospects gives his thoughts on the Sharks' prospect pool, how the foundation is set with William Eklund, Macklin Celebrini, and Will Smith, and why Sam Dickinson was exactly what the Sharks needed on the blue line. Then, examine the Sharks' greatest strength in their forward group and who the Sharks could have four first-round picks down the middle, as well as plenty of complementary pieces thanks to their recent drafts. Then, look at the areas Mike Grier will need to focus on as the Sharks continue their rebuild, including finding a high-end goalie prospect and another blue-chip defenseman.

With the offseason all but wrapped up for the San Jose Sharks and the National Hockey League, who were the big winners and losers for the Sharks? Start with why William Eklund has to be the biggest winner this offseason with the additions of Will Smith, Macklin Celebrini, and Alex Wennberg, all considered natural centers. Then, why might Thomas Bordeleau have seen his NHL job evaporate with the additions Mike Grier made this offseason? Then, shift to the bottom six and explain why Givani Smith might be playing with the San Jose Barracuda next year, thanks to the additions of Ty Dellandrea and Carl Grundström. Next, Nico Sturm might have been replaced by old friend Barclay Goodrow and why Sturm could be traded sooner rather than later. Finally, the lack of additions on the blue line was a huge win for Ty Emberson and Shakir Mukhamadullin, who could see big minutes in the NHL this season.

While the San Jose Sharks are set in goal with Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek, could Mike Grier and company look to add some netminder help for the San Jose Barracuda and insurance if Blackwood or Vanecek get hurt? Start by looking at the Shark goalie roster and why adding an AHL goalie who can play NHL games in a pinch is worth it. Start with Ivan Prosvetov, who split time between the Colorado Avalanche and Colorado Eagles and still might have some development left. Then Magnus Hellberg would fit the Aaron Dell veteran mold for an AHL goalie who can play the occasional NHL game. Also, look at Adam Scheel, who played for the Chicago Wolves but has not cracked the NHL yet. Finally, go through the other goalies who played NHL games last year and are still available to be signed.

With Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith signed, which National Hockey League teams have a better duo of forwards than the San Jose Sharks? Start by setting the rules for who is eligible for the exercise, which teams do not have qualifying players on their roster, which teams can't compete, and how most of these teams are viewed as playoff-caliber teams. Then, look at how some teams have players but nowhere near the caliber of Celebrini and Smith, or they can only put up one player worthy of competition. Finally, the teams with players of the same draft stock and skill in the NHL this year, and if the Sharks have a better tandem than their best young gun forwards?

As expected, Macklin Celebrini has signed his ELC and will play for the San Jose Sharks next season. Examine why this was the right move for Celebrini and the Sharks and why the future may be teal, but let's pump the brakes on exceeding expectations for next season. Then, get caught up on some recent signings by Mike Grier and the Sharks, including Carl Grundström and Ty Dellandrea, and where they will fit in with the recent additions in San Jose. Finally, Ty Emberson has elected for arbitration; what does that mean, and why shouldn't you panic?

San Jose Sharks fans showed why the vibes are off the charts right now, as there was a palpable buzz at Tech Cu Arena for the Sharks' annual prospect scrimmage game. With six first-round picks on the ice, headlined by Macklin Celebrini, the Sharks showed why the future is teal. Start with Celebrini's first game in teal, why he showed flashes of what makes him so special, and why his personality will make him successful. Then, Will Smith was the best player on the ice today and showed why he is ready to start his professional career. Quentin Musty continued to show his development and an instant chemistry with Will Smith. Then, bounce around some observations of the other prospects, including Kasper Halttunen continuing to work on his game, Eric Pohlkamp turning pro sooner rather than later, and Gavin O'Connell impressing.

Examine each of their backgrounds and what they should add to the Sharks. Next, could Igor Chernyshov be playing in North America sooner than expected? Look at the rumors surrounding the termination of his KHL contract and his options for next year, including a path similar to Kasper Halttunen's. While Mike Grier has said he is done with any significant additions to the roster, the San Jose Sharks still need a right-handed puck-moving defenseman. With free agency winding down, look at some of the best options on the market for the Sharks. Start with Justin Schultz and why he would provide exactly what San Jose is looking for despite being the oldest player in this group. Look at Schultz's metrics and how they match a huge need for the Sharks. Then, Adam Boqvist has become a popular name among Sharks fans. Is he worth a swing, or are the Sharks looking at a Calen Addison 2.0? John Klingberg lost most of the 2023-24 season due to a hip injury. Is he the perfect bounce-back candidate? Or is the defense going to be an issue? Finally, Tyson Barrie is another popular name among Sharks fans to help fill the void. Do the analytics agree, or are Barrie's best days gone?

General Manager Mike Grier and the San Jose Sharks opened free agency with a splash! The Sharks added two veteran forwards, Tyler Toffoli and Alex Wennberg, who should fill meaningful roles. Start with Toffoli and explain why he is the perfect addition to the Sharks and why his skill sets complement Macklin Celebrini. Then Alex Wennberg might have been slightly overpaid, but he brings insurance for Logan Couture. Examine what Wennberg will bring to the Sharks and why his flexibility will be huge for San Jose. Finally, the San Jose Barracuda made a couple of signings in Jimmy Schuldt and Lucas Carlsson, and look at the areas that Mike Grier needs to attack over the next couple of days in free agency.

The San Jose Sharks made several roster moves ahead of free agency. The Sharks announced the signings of Luke Kunin and Justin Bailey and the termination of Nikolai Knyzhov's contract. Start with what Kunin's re-signing means and why it sets him up for a potential trade piece at the deadline. Then, what are the expectations for Justin Bailey heading into the season, and why could he be a massive upgrade for the San Jose Barracuda's top six? Next, the what if of Nikolai Knyzhov's career and if it wasn't derailed by injuries. The Sharks also made qualifying offers to Egor Afanasyev, Thomas Bordeleau, Brandon Coe, Ty Dellandrea, Ty Emberson, Carl Grundstrom, and Henry Thrun. They also let Calen Addison, Jacob Peterson, Jack Studnicka, and Filip Zadina test free agency. Examine what went wrong for the players who went to free agency and what is next for those getting offers. Finally, do a roster reset to see who is still signed and what Mike Grier should be looking to add when free agency starts.
