Locked On Stars - Daily Podcast On The Dallas Stars

Matt Duchene has a huge four point night in a 9-2 win for the Dallas Stars over the Nashville Predators. The Stars dominated the Preds from start to finish, outshooting the Preds 18-1 in the first period while outscoring them 4-0. Wyatt Johnston had 3 points along with Tyler Seguin and Ty Dellandrea as Dallas flexed their muscles at Bridgestone arena. Jake Oettinger picks up his 7th straight win and did not even play the 3rd period. The Stars reached 200 goals for the season in just 54 games, the fewest amount of games since 1986-87. They have solidified themselves as the team to beat in the west maybe besides the Vancouver Canucks. The Stars did have dissapointing news coming out of the game. Defensemen Nils Lundkvist left the game early in the first after taking what appeared to be an elbow to the head and did not return. He was listed with an upper body injury and did not return to the game. Joey speculates what Dallas may have to do depending on the severity of the injury. To finish the episode off we look at the Stars next opponent, the Edmonton Oilers who are coming off a loss, but playing the best hockey of anyone else in the league over the last month. Connor Mcdavid and Leon Draisaitl are the key players to shut down obviously. Can the Stars scorching offense lead them to four straight victory's?

On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey asks the question are the Dallas Stars starting to find balance in their play? Coming off one of their best wins of the season over Carolina. With Jake Oettinger playing at a high level and the defense playing at their best potential along with a steady dose of offense we have seen this season makes them a very dangerous team. Oettinger has won his last 6 starts, the Stars have a goals against average below three in their last six games and their overall goals against is improving as the weeks move on. Not only is that a great sign, but their overall team defense and physicality came to light against the Hurricanes and it was one of the few times this season you could say the Stars were not over matched physically against a great team. They now sit 3rd in the NHL and have a two point advantage leading the Central division. Dallas must go on the road to face the Nashville Predators tonight in the final game of the season series which has seen the Preds take two out of three so far. The Predators best players have struck the Stars in the three games. Ryan O'Reilly has six points in the three games, Filip Forsberg has three goals and Roman Josi has three assists. The Stars must stop their best in order to win in Nashville. Finally a segment that has treated us nicely the last few weeks, Shooting Star. Joey hit on Roope Hintz and Jake Oettinger out of the All-Star break and tonight he goes with Matt Duchene. Duchene needs his revenge game against the team that bought him out the summer and no better time to do it in their own building.

The Dallas Stars get a huge win over the Carolina Hurricanes by a final score of 4-2 yesterday at home. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey celebrates one of the most complete wins of the season for the Stars against one of the hottest teams in the NHL. The Stars we're really good in different facets of the game, and more importantly closed out the game in the 3rd period. Jason Robertson scored the go ahead goal and Matt Duchene sealed the win with an empty netter. Joey explains how important that game was in giving him confidence in the Stars moving forward and winning games come playoff time. Roope Hintz tallied a goal and Jani Hakanpaa chipped in with two assists. All in all a great night at the AAC. The next topic is about the recent news of Evgenii Dadonov who will be out for 4 to 6 weeks with a lower body injury he suffered against Montreal on the weekend. Not only does this give Ty Dellandrea an opportunity to play on an every day basis, but Dallas may have to make a call up from the Texas Stars. Which begs the question, do we get to see Logan Stankoven of Mavrik Bourque? Joey discusses the options the Stars have moving forward with the Dadonov injury. The final segment highlights Jake Oettinger who made 32 saves in his 3rd straight win and 6th straight win at home which ties a career high. Otter playing some of his best hockey of the season makes the Stars a very dangerous team with the depth they currently have.

The Dallas Stars have some of the best prospects in the American Hockey League this season in Logan Stankoven and Mavrik Bourque, but where does the entire prospect pool rank. Joey takes a look at an article from The Athletic that ranked the Stars prospect pool 21st out of 32 teams. We look at individual players including Lian Bichel, Aram Minnietian and Christian Kyrou who are three young defensemen that have abilities and characteristics that the current Stars are lacking. We highlight some of those traits and how how important it is to his on some of these prospects since you more than likely plan to move off some players like Jani Hakanpaa and Esa Lindell in the near future. The juicy part of the episode revolves around tonights game against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes have been on a role lately and Joey explains the similar styles the Stars and Hurricanes like to play and why it makes such a fun match up. The first period will be a crucial one for Dallas who is coming off a three game road trip. Carolina has been outscored 26-21 in the first period on the road this season. Stars need a fast start and play with a lead in front of Jake Oettinger. The return of shooting star calls for the first time this player has been chosen. Roope Hintz has two points in his last five games. Going up against fellow countrymen Sebastian Aho, will spur on Hintz to a big night and hopefully a Stars win.

The Dallas Stars Power Play is 2-for-15 since returning from the All-Star Break and now both sides of special teams are struggling. The Stars have been able to get away with their struggles in two of the three games due to great goaltending from Jake Oettinger, but it needs to fix in order to close games out. The Stars had four minutes of man advantage time late in Montreal and failed to convert while allowing two shorthanded breakaways that almost came back to bite them. Joey is hoping the Stars make changes to the top unit, such as taking Jamie Benn off the first unit, and adding Matt Duchene or Wyatt Johnston to it in hopes of unlocking some offense. The Stars power play is still around league average, but for a team that was top 5 a year ago, it's important for them to be firing on all cylinders down the stretch. Tyler Seguin, Duchene and Mason Marchment have become the new top line for the Stars. Not only have they been the most consistent and productive of all the trios. They are the one line that has not been changed throughout the season. All three are going to end up with 20 plus goals this season, and a lot of the success has to be contributed to Duchene and what he provides. Finally, Joey looks at the current standings which includes the Stars as one of four teams to have 70 points at this point in the season. They are top 5 in the NHL with a chance to expand their lead in the Central Division as the near the trade deadline.

The Dallas Stars prospect Logan Stankoven is having an incredible season with the Texas Stars in the AHL this season. As a rookie, Stankoven leads the league with 51 points in 41 games this season and just competed in the All-Stars Game last weekend. Via JD Young, another Locked On NHL host, took some videos of a media scrum with Stankoven where he talked about his path to the NHL and his success in his first season in Texas. Joey listens and comments on Stankoven’s answers and how exciting it is to know the Stars have young talent awaiting in the wings. It’s not everyday you see a rookie come in and have the success he’s having, Stankoven admitted how tough it is to score, but he seems to have an understanding on how to get the job done. Next up, Joey gives awards away for the Most Valuable Player, Most Improved Player, Most Surprising and Disappointing Players for the Stars this season. Which players do you agree or disagree with? The final segment is a quick preview of the Montreal Canadiens, a team the beat the Stars in their first meeting back in Dallas. Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield both had big games for Montreal. Special teams have had a hand in both games coming out of the All-Star Break. Hopefully the Stars can be on the right side of those results this Saturday.

The Dallas Stars penalty kill gives up three goals for the second time this season as they fall 5-4 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Today's episode of Locked On Stars revolves around a pk that has fallen since the new year. Since Jan. 1st the Stars have a 74% penalty kill percentage which is the 26th worst in the NHL and have given up eight goals in last 13 chances. Joey states they can fix it if they want to. Miro Heiskanen is a world class talent and he needs to start killing penalties. If not, then Thomas Harley needs to, no more exclusive pk work from Esa Lindell and Jani Hakanpaa. At one point they were one of the best units in hockey, but now it's not and they can fix it by playing their best players in those situations. Next up is the underwhelming play on the blue line. Last night's game answered the question if you need another defensemen? The Stars gave up three power play goals, had a backup goalie in net and still almost won the game. Adding another piece would make them a true contender with the offense they already have. Finally we finish taking a look at the central division race and what would be the best first round outcome for the Stars come playoff time.

Jake Oettinger makes a career high 47 saves as he dazzles in Buffalo to shutdown the Sabres. The Dallas Stars hung on for a 2-1 victory after an onslaught from the Sabres thanks to the heroics of Oettinger. It was his best start of the season and great to see him be in a groove. His rebound control was great and had to work hard because the Stars we're not great in front of him. Joey states how important it is to see that Otter can have performances like this, yes he needs to be more consistent, but when he's on his game he's one of the best net-minders in the NHL. Matt Duchene scored on the power play to start the scoring and Sam Steel got the other, but the Stars could not find the insurance goal late. In a special teams 3rd period, Dallas had a couple of 2 man advantages and failed to come through. The power play was 1-for-5 and needs a find a way to pull through and close out games. Buffalo doubled up the Stars in shots in the first period and even more in 2nd as the Stars took a while to get their legs back from nine days off. Now the Stars return to action against a dangerous Toronto Maple Leafs team that has Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander. Goaltending will play a key factor with backup Scott Wedgewood in net for the Stars with Toronto coming off an OT loss on Monday.

The Dallas Stars come out of the All-Star break on the road against the Buffalo Sabres tonight. However, General Manager Jim Nill did a Q&A with Mike Heika and he spoke about the trade deadline and more. He was asked about how aggressive the Stars might be and if he believes the need another defensemen. Joey for the most part agrees with the answers Nill gave and understands he will not be 100% transparent about their plans because at the end of the day it's about leverage to make deals. The more concerning answer was that the next month will determine if the Stars need a defender. The last four months should determine that the Stars need one, not the next month. Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley can only do so much and with them playing together, that can leave holes in other pairings. It's very clear where the Stars struggle and need to address issues to make it to a Stanley Cup Final. Something Dallas does not struggle with is offense. The second segment documents the Stars incredible offense this season, but they do not generate many power plays because of it. For a team that maintains possession and spends a lot of time generating chances and scoring the majority of the them, Dallas is fourth to last in power play opportunities this season. It's hard to give a clear cut answer why, but if the Stars can do more to get more power plays, it adds another layer of an already lethal offense. The final segment we preview tonight's game with the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo did not make the next step many thought they would and find themselves 6th in the Atlantic Division. One of the few bright spots is Casey Middlestadt, who leads the team in scoring, but only has 12 goals this season.

The Dallas Stars return from All-Star break and face the Buffalo Sabers tomorrow night. Jake Oettinger returns as the lone representative for the Stars this season and also returns on the winning team, Team Matthews! Oettinger also stopped 8 out of 10 shots in the Skills Competition against Eilias Pettersson. Joey begins the episode taking a look into Otter's change in routine after having ankle surgery in July. He's had to practice less on the ice and do more off the ice like video work. Joey thinks this may has led to some of his inconsistencies in his play this season and once it becomes more comfortable his play and numbers will return to what we've seen in previous seasons. The 2nd segment is a preview of the February schedule for the Dallas Stars. The Stars play a total of 13 games against nine teams in the playoff picture and three back to backs. They take on top teams such as Carolina twice, Boston, New York and two division opponents in Colorado and Winnipeg. This will be a very important stretch for the Stars who want to win the Central Division and a trade deadline that looms in a month. The All-Star break came at a good time for the Stars, but they have to beat quality opponents to keep pace in with the Avalanche and Jets. The show wraps up discussing the NHL's plans to have a Four Nations in season tournament in 2025 consisting of Canada, United States, Sweden and Finland plus having NHL players compete in the World Cup and returning to the Olympics. This will be a great way to grow the game and to see the best players compete against each other on a more consistent level.
