Dream-pop band The Marías have captivating audiences since their nimble, lush EPs Superclean Vol. I and II, in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Led by frontwoman Maria Zardoya’s slinky, sultry vocals and anchored by Josh Conway’s cinematic grooves, their music feels instinctual and familiar, with lyrics that go for the emotional jugular. Slot them seamlessly between Cigarettes After Sex and Mazzy Star and you’re getting there. Fast-forward eight years and they’re streaming millions and have collaborated with everyone from Bad Bunny to Benny Blanco and Selena Gomez.
Maria joins us in the studio for the first time to discuss all this, plus how and why she left Puerto Rico for Snellville, Georgia, ultimately winding up in LA (and the crazy way she did so!), meeting Josh by chance, falling in love, and forming the band. But how does a band — completed by Jesse Perlman and Edward James — survive the break-up of its key songwriters? Maria and Josh navigated these choppy waters in the creation of 2024’s Submarine, their story lingering on recent singles ‘Back to Me’ and ‘Nobody New.’
The 29-year-old opens up about the therapy, the heartbreak and the healing. Is love worth it? What is love without possession? We go deep and talk psychedelics, underwater photoshoots, the upcoming record which will complete this three colors trilogy (a nod to director Krzysztof Kieślowski), plus much, much more.
