  • 142: Chris Aimone | Technologically Enhanced Meditation w/ Muse
Chris Aimone is an inventor, an engineer, and a visionary. The Muse, brain-sensing headband for meditation is a creation of the company he co-founded called Interaxon. Chris' creative and design practices span many fields including architecture, alternative energy, augmented reality, imaging, music, and robotics. Fueled by a masters level education in engineering and computer science from the University of Toronto.

Chris Aimone co-founded Interaxon with a mission to create technology that can support and guide our quest for peace and wellbeing. An inventor at heart, Chris’s creative and design practice has spanned many fields, including architecture, alternative energy, augmented reality, imaging, music and robotics, fueled by a masters-level education in engineering science and computer science at the University of Toronto.

Chris has built installations for the Ontario Science Centre and contributed to major technology art projects featured around the world (including Burning Man). Chris’s science education and lifetime of mind-body practices informed his creation of the Muse brain-sensing headband.

Before Interaxon, Chris spent a decade working with Dr. Steve Mann exploring human-centric and transformative technology. Together they pushed the limits of cybernetic wearables, brain computer interfaces and augmented reality, developing early prototypes of technologies that now support several successful start-ups. They also founded a musical instrument company, producing the world’s first water-based organs, or “hydraulophones,” which have been installed at science museums and splash parks around the world.

  • 141: Lawrence Levy | Journey of Pixar with Steve Jobs to Make History
The never-before-told story of Pixar's improbable success.

"Hi, Lawrence?" the caller asked. "This is Steve Jobs. I saw your picture in a magazine a few years ago and thought we'd work together someday."

After Steve Jobs was unceremoniously dismissed from Apple, he turned his attention to a little-known graphics art company that he owned called Pixar.

One day, out of the blue, Jobs called Lawrence Levy, a Harvard-trained lawyer and Silicon Valley executive to whom he had never spoken before, in the hope of persuading Levy to help him get Pixar on the right track.

What Levy found in Pixar was a company on the verge of failure. To Pixar and Beyond is the extraordinary story of what happened next: How Levy, working closely with Jobs and the Pixar team, produced and implemented a highly improbable roadmap that transformed the sleepy graphics art studio into one of Hollywood's greatest success stories.

Set in the worlds of Silicon Valley and Hollywood, the book takes listeners inside Pixar, Disney, law firms, and investment banks. It provides an up-close, first-hand account of Pixar's stunning ascent, how it took risks, Levy's enduring collaboration and friendship with Jobs, and how Levy came to see in Pixar deeper parallels that apply to all aspects of our lives.

    -----

In 1994, out of the blue, I received a phone call from Steve Jobs to see if I had any interest in running Pixar’s business. Over the next twelve years, I served as Pixar’s Chief Financial Officer, a member of its Office of the President and later as a member of its board of directors. During this period I developed and put in place the strategy that would transform Pixar from a money-losing graphics company into a multibillion-dollar entertainment studio.

I then took a break from corporate life to pursue my passion for eastern philosophy and meditation. I came to see the power of these ideas for realizing our potential as individuals and for creating human-centered organizations that foster creativity, dignity, and excellence.

In 2016, I released my first book, To Pixar and Beyond: My Unlikely Journey with Steve Jobs to Make Entertainment History (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt). The book is An Amazon Best Book of 2016 in Business and Leadership and A Fortune Magazine Best Book of 2016. The New York Times described it as “enchanting…Mr. Levy has quite a story to tell” and Fortune Magazine called it “An epic tale of Levy’s quest to balance the competing interests of the quiet artists and technologists who created Toy Story and the mercurial entrepreneur who controlled their professional fates.”

I recently published an article in the Harvard Business Review entitled Finding the Healthy Tension Between Being Confident and Collaborative. I speak regularly on the Pixar story and these topics including talks at Harvard Law School, Harvard Business School, Pixar and Google.

My education includes a law degree from Harvard Law School. After moving to Silicon Valley in the 1980s and starting the first technology transactions law practice, I became a partner at the law firm Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich and Rosati. From there, I joined Electronics for Imaging as its chief financial officer and vice chairman of the board, a company I took public before joining Pixar.

In 2003, together with four co-founders, I created a non-profit called Juniper Foundation that focuses on bringing Indo-Tibetan meditation practices to contemporary life. I teach meditation weekly and continue to write and speak on a range of topics including creativity and innovation, collaboration, realizing our potential, and building human-centered organizations.

I live in Palo Alto, California with my wife Hillary. I am an avid reader, with a wide range of interests including philosophy, anthropology, and science fiction, and I love to exercise and enjoy the latest in pop culture with my family. Here’s one quote I love, from Patrick Rothfuss’s The Name of the Wind:

  • Live Q&A - I'm Lost Finding My Purpose
I had the honor to host a live question & answer on October 1st. Due to technical issues and my own stupidity, I completely screwed up the recording. This was the only conversation that lived.

Oh man, it was so worth it. I had a blast talking to Matthew, a young 20-year-old in college that is LOST or STUCK in finding his purpose. I'm 21 and I was recently stuck in this mind trap for so long until I discovered the real answer within myself.

Not to mention he was in a class, and took the risk to pick up the call and LEFT!

I run into so many people out there that are facing the same mental ambitious trap.

  • #137 - Corey Jackson | Former NFL Athlete Turned Business CEO
Corey Jackson arrived in the NFL in 2003 from the University of Nevada-Reno, which he had actually attended on a basketball scholarship. Having decided against playing professional basketball overseas in order to instead complete his degree in speech communications, the head coach of the school’s football team offered him a spot on the roster. It was the first time Jackson had played football since junior high school, having participated only in basketball and track in high school.

In spite of his brief experience, in 2003 the Cleveland Browns signed Jackson as an undrafted rookie free agent. He spent three years with the team on the practice squad and was elevated to the active roster for one regular season game. In 2006 he joined the Denver Broncos practice squad, but an injury ultimately led to the end of the road for him in the NFL.

However, the NFL is a place where life-long connections develop, regardless of the time spent. Jackson’s experience was no different. Along with developing those relationships, he also watched as many around him dealt with a variety of challenges that come with being a professional athlete.

“It really was my experience, and my friends’ experiences, of people discouraging us from being independent thinkers and being pushed into the realm of just play football,” Jackson said. “I saw some of my buddies fall into that trap. If you’re not an independent thinker, you start to depend on other people to think for you. I had people call me up and talk about devastating experiences with people they trusted and had relied on to think for them. That’s not the plan. It got me thinking, ‘What’s the solution?’”

The solution Jackson came up with was, Qwerkz. Qwerkz is an app for professional athletes to connect with each other and share ideas, experiences and information about any topic they choose, including business endeavors.

“The goal of Qwerkz is to create the atmosphere where guys can communicate with each other but succeed on their own,” Jackson said. “These guys are going to bring so much more value to each other. When we’re communicating I can find new opportunities for myself and I might not be as dependent on you as you would like me to be" - from Lisa Zimmerman on NFL Player Engagement.
