  • #136 - Loretta Breuning | Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain Your Brain to Boost Your Serotonin, Dopamine, Oxytocin, Endorphin Levels
Loretta Graziano Breuning, PhD is Founder of the Inner Mammal Institute and author of Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain your brain to boost your serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin levels. She's Professor Emerita of Management at California State University, East Bay.

As a teacher and mom, Loretta was not convinced by prevailing theories of human motivation. Then she learned about the brain chemistry we share with earlier mammals, and everything made sense. So she began creating resources to help people manage their inner mammal. Her work has helped thousands of people rewire themselves for more happy chemicals.

Her work has been featured on Forbes, NPR, Fox, the Wall Street Journal, NBC, Psychology Today, Cosmopolitan, Inc, Men's Health, Fast Company, Dr Oz and Real Simple. She has been interviewed on a large number of podcasts, including James Altucher, Brainfluence, Recovery Unscripted, YogaBody, FatburningMan, and Primal Blueprint. She has spoken at the International Coach Federation, the Latin American Positive Psychology Network, the Relational Center, and Imagery International. Her books have been translated into Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French and Turkish.

Dr. Breuning holds a BS from Cornell University and a PhD from Tufts University. She's married with children who are tax-paying adults. In her free time she likes to visit historic places and watch Spanish and French videos while exercising.

Get ready to boost your happiness in just 45 days! Habits of a Happy Brain shows you how to retrain your brain to turn on the chemicals that make you happy. Each minute offers simple activities that help you understand the roles of your "happy chemicals" - serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and endorphin. You'll also learn how to build new habits by rerouting the electricity in your brain to flow down a new pathway, making it even easier to trigger these happy chemicals and increase feelings of satisfaction when you need them most. Filled with dozens of exercises that will help your reprogram your brain, Habits of a Happy Brain shows you how to live a happier, healthier life!

  • #134 - Ed Andrew | Destroying Cancer with the Power of the Mind
Ed has been working with and helping people in one form or another for over 25 years. He brings with him extensive and varied experience of working around the world in different industries and cultures.

Starting his career as a barrister in London in the mid 1990's, Ed became a headhunter over 20 years ago. He moved to Sydney in 2001 to set up his first legal recruitment business EA International. Opening EA's Delhi office in the mid 2000's at the time when our client Clifford Chance was pioneering alternative legal services a few miles down the road in Gurgaon.

He sold EA in 2010 moving back to England with his next business a Saas recruitment platform and community for financial and professional services which had roots in behavioural profiling. Returning to Sydney in 2012 Ed started consulting to SME's and technology start ups in Asia while embarking on a personal journey of awareness brought on by a fluke discovery of cancer. Taking time out to repair and recharge Ed learned about nutrition, meditation, human behaviour and how to change disruptive patterns - to enjoy a more simple and uncluttered life.

Within a year he and his wife founded a fashion and e-commerce business later moving to the rice fields of Bali to be closer to their factories and to practice a healthier way of life where they lived for eighteen months.

Having spent 2 years in England Ed and his family now live back in Sydney. Ed has advised businesses and law firms and continues to mentor people going through change. The Human Consultancy was borne from the knowledge that regardless of technology business is built on its people and that people need to come first, to be nurtured and respected and that their career, interests, and needs will change over time.

Ed and his family live in Sydney, Australia where you may well find him elbow deep in making raw chocolate.

  • #133 - Josh Perry | Pro BMX Athlete & Multiple Brain Tumor Survivor
Tufts Medical Center in Boston just called with my latest MRI results: There are two new masses on the right side of my brain the size of peas (about 8mm in size from residual growth), where the surgery was done. My options are to follow it and see if it changes in growth, MRI no sooner than six months, Gamma Knife radiosurgery or full-on open cranial surgery. Haha, yay."

The message arrives in text form from Josh Perry, a 27-year-old professional BMX rider about to enter the 2017 competition season. A week before, we had spoke on the phone for an hour about his life as a professional BMX rider currently living and training in Cary, North Carolina, and how he was aiming to push himself into a larger role as an advocate for nutritional health and positive thinking, working with brands outside of BMX to help expose larger audiences to the passion that he's devoted his life to.

A week later, the above message arrives. Ordinarily, the news has the potential to derail an entire day or year, let alone positive ambitions for the future. But Perry isn't like anyone I've ever met before. On top of all of the common injuries that accompany the life of a pro BMXer, this isn't Perry's first experience with masses in his brain. In fact, this is his third time.

Perry quickly follows up with another text message: "Just rode a morning session and rode just as well as I've been riding. Nothing has changed if I don't allow it to." This from a guy who has already had his skull cut open to remove a large tumor, while doctors stopped the flow of blood to his brain through an artery in his groin.

"If I didn't hit my head riding, I'd be dead."

Perry's history with brain tumors began in March of 2010.

Perry was attempting to learn a new BMX Park trick on a quarterpipe when he over-rotated and landed off the bike, crashing down on his shoulder and head. Although he was wearing a helmet, Perry decided to undergo an MRI because of the fear of traumatic brain injury. But this wasn't Perry's first bout with injury as a BMX professional. There were lingering, unanswered issues in his recent medical history. Throughout that past year, he had been experiencing periods of intense headaches coupled with bouts of temporary blindness. After repeated doctor visits and an attempt by doctors to get Perry on pain killers, nothing had been diagnosed.

Essentially, it took a BMX crash (the exact outcome Perry aimed to avoid) to get him to undergo a brain scan, and discover the source of his symptoms.

But the outcome of the examination was not anything that he had expected. "I wanted to get an MRI to make sure my brain wasn't swelling and the doctors told me 'Yeah, you have a large mass that shouldn't be in your brain and it's a tumor, and we're not sure it's cancerous or benign but it needs to come out.'"

''Wake up to the miracle you are,'' he directs. ''Here's what you've forgotten: You're a fu*king miracle of being.'' It isn't other people that are standing in your way, it isn't even your circumstances that are blocking your ability to thrive, it's yourself and the negative self-talk you keep telling yourself.

In Unfu*k Yourself, Bishop leads you through a series of seven assertions:

    I am willing.
    I am wired to win.
    I got this.
    I embrace the uncertainty.
I am not my thoughts; I am what I do.
    I am relentless.
I expect nothing and accept everything.

  • Public Speaking #1 at LinkedIn Local Boston
I gave a talk for the first time on a panel at LinkedIn Local in Boston. This is a snippet of my parts of the event and what we talked about how to grow and spread your business or personal message with LinkedIn.

I've been actively posting content for the past 6 months on LinkedIn - out of all of the clients I've landed...this seems to be a major pattern I've noticed.

Almost every successful client call usually always starts like this -

"Mark, Every time I open my phone you are always the first post I see. You are everywhere."

Whether it's business relationships or friends I get this all the time.

    - Be a content machine. Look at Gary V's content pyramid engine. Use content like a magnet for like-minded people.

    - Post every single day but don't lose the value or message. For some people it's possible, others haven't learned how.

    - Engage like your life depends on it. If you're not starting conversations why would somebody start one with you?

    - Respond to your damn comments. Imagine if someone in real life asks you something or says something...would you just walk away?

    - Collaborate with people walking the walk on LinkedIn. Leverage brand equity.
