  • FLOW #47 - Are Affirmations Real or BS?
You're listening to the 47th episode of the Humans 2.0 podcast, solo-series, FLOW! Today's episode is on the concept of affirmations. Many people have mixed feelings about this concept. Is it new-age hippie material or real ancient articulated wisdom?

    Science and Non-Science of Affirmation

Repeatedly being exposed to radio advertisements, TV advertisements, and billboards with key messaging could be considered an unconscious imbibing of affirmations, which if accepted by the subconscious, could influence decisions (positive or negative) towards the advertised product or service.

Affirmations are positive statements. When properly formed, affirmations can counteract some of our negative thoughts and habits, resonating with the alpha brain waves and enabling us to achieve empowerment. I frequently ask students and clients to give me examples of a positive affirmation.

    Some of these examples include:

    “I am strong”

    “I am healthy”

“I am in control of my life”

“I have set my goals and I am moving towards them”

This is a great start, as affirmations with words and valuable phrases can be quite powerful, imprinting positive messages in our subconscious mind. These affirmations can help with rewriting the thoughts in the files, where often-negative messages that originate from a repeated phrase can be stored, The only barrier to achieving our personal goals is ourselves and we often need to retrain our thought patterns to see the joys, opportunities, and possibilities in life rather than the limitations.

Our thoughts can drive our attitudes, our actions, and our behaviors. We can use this powerful chain reaction for empowerment, achievement, success, and self-actualization.

  • #124 - Chip Conley | Wisdom @ Work: The Making of a Modern Elder
At age 52, after selling the company he founded and ran as CEO for 24 years, rebel boutique hotelier Chip Conley was looking at an open horizon in midlife. Then he received a call from the young founders of Airbnb, asking him to help grow their disruptive start-up into a global hospitality giant. He had the industry experience, but Conley was lacking in the digital fluency of his 20-something colleagues. He didn't write code, or have an Uber or Lyft app on his phone, was twice the age of the average Airbnb employee, and would be reporting to a CEO young enough to be his son. Conley quickly discovered that while he'd been hired as a teacher and mentor, he was also in many ways a student and intern. What emerged is the secret to thriving as a mid-life worker: learning to marry wisdom and experience with curiosity, a beginner's mind, and a willingness to evolve, all hallmarks of the "Modern Elder."

In a world that venerates the new, bright, and shiny, many of us are left feeling invisible, undervalued, and threatened by the "digital natives" nipping at our heels. But Conley argues that experience is on the brink of a comeback. Because at a time when power is shifting younger, companies are finally waking up to the value of the humility, emotional intelligence, and wisdom that come with age. And while digital skills might have only the shelf life of the latest fad or gadget, the human skills that mid-career workers possess--like good judgment, specialized knowledge, and the ability to collaborate and coach - never expire.

Part manifesto and part playbook, Wisdom@Work ignites an urgent conversation about ageism in the workplace, calling on us to treat age as we would other type of diversity. In the process, Conley liberates the term "elder" from the stigma of "elderly," and inspires us to embrace wisdom as a path to growing whole, not old. Whether you've been forced to make a mid-career change, are choosing to work past retirement age, or are struggling to keep up with the millennials rising up the ranks, Wisdom@Work will help you write your next chapter.

  • #123 - Jeremy Ryan Slate | Create Your Own Life and Break the Chains of Ordinary
Jeremy Ryan Slate is the Host of Create Your Own Life Podcast and CEO of Command Your Brand Media and Slate Media Productions.

    Jeremy's Auto-Bio

I have. I think we are a different breed, we work for a vision that not everyone understands; sometimes that can be a lonely journey. At 19 I tore three major ligaments in my knee, and had what was supposed to be an easy surgery. Turned out not to be so easy, freaked my parents out and led to me getting a hospital visit from a priest. What should have been a life changing event but wasn’t…

I received my masters degree in ancient history from Seton Hall University, studied literature at Oxford University and graduated into one of the worst job markets in history. I ended up continuing as the weekend manager at the same gym I worked at for 8 years. I also took on a job painting houses which led to about 8 months of 16 hour days. I ended up teaching at a private school for two years, but burned out pretty quickly…

I had the brilliant idea of running a personal training company, MLM business and selling life insurance at the same time…

    Hello even more burn out.

In late 2015, I started the Create Your Own Life Podcast and life very quickly took off and did a total 180. Now in addition to interviewing many of the people I admire most, I run Command Your Brand Media and Slate Media Productions.

I have been a teacher, personal trainer and finally found my place in marketing. I enjoy helping people reach the level that they believe they can, because I believe they can get there. Through this blog, and my podcast, Create Your Own Life, I seek to help you build the business and the life that you dream of. Dream big. Its been my biggest flaw and biggest asset.

In this podcast, I want to give you actionable things that you can do, not just more fluff, there’s too much of that out there. CYOL will give you the steps and skills that successful entrepreneurs, business people and artists applied to create life on their terms.

Are you ready for the ride?

  • #122 - Dr. David Friedman | Food Sanity: How to Eat in a World of Fad Diets
Dr. David Friedman is a #1 National Bestselling author, Doctor of Naturopathy, Clinical Nutritionist and Chiropractic Neurologist. He received a post-doctorate certification from Harvard Medical School, is a Board Certified Alternative Medical Practitioner (AMP), Board Certified in Integrative Medicine (BCIM) and a registered Naturopathic Diplomate (RND).

He's a former teacher of neurology and author of the college textbook, "Understanding the Nervous System." Dr. Friedman is a contributing writer for many leading health and fitness magazines. He's been a guest on over a hundred syndicated radio and television shows and his bestselling CD, America's Unbalanced Diet, has sold over a million copies, helping raise awareness about the unhealthy foods people are consuming.

His list of patients have included top celebrities including John Travolta, Jenny McCarthy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Val Kilmer, and Paul Newman, to name a few. As the Health Expert for Lifetime Television's morning show, millions of people have enjoyed his weekly, cutting edge features.

Viewers favorites include: Artificial sweeteners cause obesity; milk causes brittle bones and how some vitamins may actually contribute to disease. Dr. Friedman also hosts the nationally syndicated program To Your Good Health Radio, which has changed the face of talk radio by incorporating entertainment, shock value and solutions to everyday health and wellness issues.

The show is heard coast-to-coast and podcasts are available on iHeart Radio, iTunes, TuneInRadio, SketcherRadio, SlackerRadio, RadioMD, and Sound Cloud. Each show features interviews from world-renowned doctors, celebrities, sports figures, and New York Times bestselling authors who all share one common goal - finding a healthy lifestyle in the unhealthiest developed country in the world.....the good ole U.S.A.

Dr. Friedman's holistic health clinic has been honored in the National Who's Who Directory for Distinguished Businesses since 2002 and his memberships include:

    Naturopathic Medical Association
    American Dietetic Association
    American Association of Drugless Practitioners
    American Holistic Health Association
    Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
Academy of Integrative Health & Medicine
Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research
    American Nutrition Association
    American Chiropractic Council on Neurology

As health expert for Lifetime television’s syndicated morning show and radio host, Dr. David Friedman has spent 18 years interviewing hundreds of health advocates, scientists, doctors and bestselling authors. His goal has always been to share research-based advice to help his audience reach their optimal health. Unfortunately, that’s not what happened.

Instead, every guest would leave his audience (and himself) more confused. The proponent of a vegan lifestyle would contradict the Paleo enthusiast. Those who swear by the Mediterranean eating style would be opposed to what the Gluten Free experts reported. Every week it was a new thing.

Frustrated with so much biased and conflicting information, Dr. Friedman dove into the research and took a common sense meets common science approach. In his award-winning, #1 national best-selling book, Food Sanity, how to eat in a world of fads and fiction, Dr. Friedman clears up the contradictions and misconceptions about what we are (and are not) supposed to eat.
