  • Boundaries With the Opposite Sex - Part Two
The practical boundaries we keep with the opposite sex, plus your questions on friendships, work and prayer.

    About This Episode

In part two of Boundaries With the Opposite Sex, we get practical. We share the specific boundaries we keep to protect our marriage, from not being alone with someone of the opposite sex in a house or car to how we handle social media, messages and even doctor's appointments. Then we answer your questions about close friendships, work relationships, praying with the opposite sex and the Billy Graham rule. Maybe your spouse isn't at this place yet, and that's okay; it's a growing process, and we are walking this out day by day too. We pray this starts a healthy conversation between you and your spouse, and if your heart is already here, walk it out and fervently pray for your spouse's heart.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

    In This Episode

Never alone in private — why we avoid being alone in a house or car with the opposite sex.
Open communication — copying each other on messages.
Social media boundaries — why Aaron unfollowed every woman on his personal accounts.
Everyday situations — doctor's appointments, massages and other practical choices.
Opposite-sex friendships — answering your questions about close friends.
The Billy Graham rule — boundaries for pastors and at work.
Praying with the opposite sex — why we recommend accountability or another person present.
Two questions to ask your spouse — how does this relationship make you feel, and would you like it to be different?

  • Boundaries With the Opposite Sex - Part One
Why honoring your spouse (Hebrews 13:4) means no close friendships with the opposite sex once married.

    About This Episode

In this episode we're talking about hard conversations again, but this time we get very specific: boundaries with the opposite sex. We start by asking whether there is any area of our lives God is not allowed access to. Then we dig into the word 'honor' in Hebrews 13:4 and what it means for your spouse to hold a set-apart place no one else occupies. We define what a close friend is and share why we believe married people shouldn't have close friends of the opposite sex, along with personal examples from our own life. As Proverbs 3:13 says, 'Blessed is the one who finds wisdom.' We hope you listen with a teachable heart and are inspired to be a light in this world.

Full access — is there any area of your life God isn't allowed into?
Honor in Hebrews 13:4 — giving your spouse a distinctive, set-apart place.
What is a close friend? — alone time, intimate details and deep conversation.
Opposite-sex friendships — why we believe married people shouldn't have close friends of the opposite sex.
Real-life examples — asking a husband who arrived early to wait in his car.
What we'd do differently — a carpool situation we'd handle differently now.
Teaching others to honor your marriage — humility and protecting your marriage.

  • 7 Battle Verses for Overcoming Sin - Part Two
Condemnation vs. conviction, Christ's intercession, and the power of confession: battle verses three to seven.

    About This Episode

The word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword; it pierces to the soul and it is what transforms us. In part two, we go through the rest of our battle verses to meditate on when you are trying to overcome sin. We talk about the difference between condemnation and conviction, how the Spirit and Jesus intercede for us, how God has given us everything we need for life and godliness, and what it means to practice righteousness as children of God. As Aaron puts it, if you're a believer and you're practicing sin and getting better at it, think long and hard about what you know of God and to whom you belong. We pray this equips you to overcome sin and to encourage your spouse when they're wrestling with it.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. No condemnation — what Romans 8 says to believers fighting sin.
Condemnation vs. conviction — feeling cast out versus the Spirit lovingly pointing you home.
Christ intercedes for us — the Spirit and Jesus praying for us (Romans 8:26, Luke 22:32).
Everything for life and godliness — God's divine power and promises in 2 Peter 1:3-4.
Practicing righteousness — what 1 John 3 says about children of God.
The power of confession — James 5:16 and why confessing to your spouse kills the flesh.

  • 7 Battle Verses for Overcoming Sin - Part One
Temptation is not sin: how 1 Corinthians 10:13 and Romans 6 give you a way of escape and real freedom

    About This Episode

The word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword, and it is what transforms us. In part one of this series, we walk through anchor verses to meditate on when you are trying to overcome sin. We start with the right perspective on sin from 1 John 1-2, then look at 1 Corinthians 10:13, which reminds us that no temptation is uncommon, that God always provides a way of escape, and that temptation itself is not sin. Then Romans 6 breaks the lie that believers are still slaves to sin. As Aaron puts it, this is a conversation for believers who are already saved and being sanctified through the knowledge of the Word. Our desire is that this episode equips you to fight temptation and prepares you to encourage your spouse when they are wrestling with sin.

A biblical perspective on sin — The Christian life is neither sinless perfection nor a license to keep sinning (1 John 1-2).
Battle verse one — 1 Corinthians 10:13 and the promise that no temptation you face is uncommon.
Temptation is not sin — Jesus was tempted yet without sin, so being tempted is not the same as falling.
Your way of escape — Heeding the Holy Spirit before you click, walking out the door, or making a phone call.
Battle verse two — Romans 6 and the truth that believers are no longer slaves to sin.
The elephant and the peg — Why we stay bound by lies we have already been freed from.
An open prison — Living like the prison doors have already been blown open.
Sanctified by the Word — Growing in holiness and hating sin the way God does, because sin destroys us.

  • The Return Of Christ
Live like there's no tomorrow, plan like you'll be here 100 years: why Christ's return brings hope, not fear

    About This Episode

In this episode, we discuss the return of Christ and how it is meant to encourage us as believers. Jesus' coming should stir in us an urgency to love people and share the gospel, not out of fear but out of hope. We talk about the church age we are living in now as a season of God's patience, meant to lead people to repentance, and we walk through 1 Thessalonians 4, 2 Peter 3, and Acts 1. We also look at the Jewish wedding picture of a bride waiting for her groom, and at Jesus returning bodily on the Mount of Olives as a lion and king. Our takeaway: live like there's no tomorrow, but plan and live your life as if you'll be here for 100 years, building a godly legacy.

  • What Is the Gospel? The Basic Building Blocks Explained Simply
Creation, sin, and Jesus the second Adam: a simple way to understand the gospel and share it with confidence

    About This Episode

The gospel is the foundation of everything we believe as Christians, and the reason we started Marriage After God. In this episode we discuss the single most important topic we will ever discuss on this podcast. There is both infinite simplicity and complexity in the gospel, but our goal today is to simplify it: God created man, man sinned, and God sent Jesus, the second Adam, to die and rise again for all who believe. Aaron shares vulnerably that he became a Christian at 17 and was raised in a Christian home, yet it wasn't until a few years ago that he could fully verbalize the gospel. Our goal is that this episode clarifies the gospel for you and helps you get comfortable sharing it with others.

Why simplify the gospel — Aaron's confession that he couldn't fully verbalize the gospel for years.
God created man — The gospel begins with God as Creator.
Man sinned — Why all of us stand under God's just wrath apart from Christ.
Jesus, the second Adam — Christ died as the propitiation for our sins and rose again.
Believe and confess — Salvation for all who believe and confess Jesus as Lord.
Reading Romans — Chapters 1-7 as man without Christ, chapters 8-16 as man in Christ.
Grace, not works — Ephesians 2:8 and the grace God gave us, whose name is Jesus.
The gospel and freedom — How believing he was truly free (1 Corinthians 10:13) broke Aaron's pornography addiction.

  • What Does God Love?
From John 3:16 to Hosea 3:1: seven things Scripture says God loves, and why we should love them too

    About This Episode

I was reading in Psalm 37 and came across the line "For the Lord loves justice," and I thought how cool it is that the Word directly tells us what God loves. So we went looking for more places in the Bible that tell us directly what God loves. If God loves it, maybe we should too. And since Psalm 107 tells us God's steadfast love endures forever, He still loves today the things He said He loved back then. In this episode, we walk through the world, a cheerful giver, justice, righteous deeds, the children of Israel, the disciples, and His Son, and we talk about what it looks like to love the things God loves, including how spouses give cheerfully to one another.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. In This Episode

The world — John 3:16 and God's love for the people He created in His image.
A cheerful giver — 2 Corinthians 9:7 and what cheerful giving looks like between spouses.
Justice — Psalm 37:28 and God's justice fulfilled at the cross.
Righteous deeds — Psalm 11:7 and walking in the good works God prepared for us.
The children of Israel — Hosea 3:1 and praying for the Jewish people and for revival.
The disciples — John 16:27 and the Father's love for those who believe.
His Son — John 10:17 and the Father's everlasting love for Jesus.
A prayer — Asking God to let His steadfast love transform our hearts and our marriages.

  • Tips For How To Say Something Difficult To Your Spouse
Bad timing, "you always," and needing to be right: how to have hard talks that end in reconciliation

    About This Episode

There comes a moment in every marriage, if not many moments, when a couple needs to have a hard conversation. Confronting sin, parenting differences, in-law conflict, big decisions, and areas of growth or change all require more than chatting over dinner. We have had our share of these, so in this episode we share how we have experienced these conversations in our own marriage and what we have learned. We walk through the wrong ways to approach them, from emotionally charged generalities to bad timing and needing to be right, and then the biblical way: praying first, choosing kind timing, making undistracted time, being specific, and always aiming for reconciliation. Our hope is to encourage you when these moments come up in your marriage.

"You always" and "you never" — Why generalities derail hard conversations.
Partner, not enemy — Staying on the same side instead of opposing sides.
Needing to be right — Pride, personal agendas, and mixing in other issues.
Timing is kind — Why right before a date or a romantic moment is bad timing.
Pray first — Asking God whether you're even right, and praying your spouse receives it.
Undistracted and specific — Setting aside time, putting phones away, and taking notes.
Know your end result — The goal is always reconciliation and unity, not winning.
