  • Keeping Your Word in Marriage: Stop Saying One Thing and Doing Another
Let your yes be yes: the gap between what we say and what we do, and how it quietly erodes trust.

    About This Episode

How often have you intended to do something or change in some way, but did not follow through? Whether it is a promise to your spouse or to yourself, words have power, and when we use them to make commitments we should take them seriously. Our vows may not sound like I promise; they may sound like I'll be there at 10 or I'm going to read my Bible every morning. In this episode, Aaron and Jennifer talk about the discrepancy between what we say and what we do, why it happens, how it hurts the people we love, and how to walk in integrity by grace.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

    In This Episode

Everyday vows — Why I'll be there at 10 and I'll pray for you are promises too
The word discrepancy — The gap between what we say and what we do
Real-life examples — Jennifer's coffee habit and Aaron's promise to wake the kids for workouts
Why we make hollow promises — Pleasing people, disordered lives, and simply forgetting
Let your yes be yes — What Jesus and James teach about oaths
The sacrifice of fools — Ecclesiastes on rash words and unpaid vows
Words and trust — How broken promises erode self-perception and a spouse's trust
Practical steps — Saying yes or no instead of maybe, and taking time before committing
Grace for the journey — Only Jesus perfectly controlled His tongue, and God never goes back on His word

  • 7 Ways To Strengthen and Maintain Your Marriage
The grass is greener where you water it: seven qualities from 2 Peter 1 that keep a marriage from decaying.

    About This Episode

There is a spiritual truth that goes like this: what we feed will be nourished, what we sow we will reap, what we pursue we will find, and what we water will grow. The opposite is true as well. Stop watering something, and it will eventually die. In this episode, Aaron and Jennifer talk about the importance of continual spiritual and relational maintenance. Marriages rarely fall apart all at once; they decay over time when they are not tended. Using 2 Peter 1, they share seven qualities to maintain so your marriage and your faith stay strong, effective, and fruitful.

What we water grows — The spiritual truth of sowing, feeding, and pursuing
The abandoned building — Why anything that is not maintained slowly decays
The grass is greener where you water it — Taking responsibility for our action and our inaction
Exhort one another daily — Guarding against a heart hardened by the deceitfulness of sin
Virtue and knowledge — Pursuing purity and growing in knowledge of God and His Word
Self-control and steadfastness — Training the flesh and standing firm in unity and faith
Godliness and brotherly affection — Devotion to God and loving your spouse as a brother or sister in Christ
Love — Not simply maintaining love but earnestly seeking it
Salvation and maintenance — Our salvation rests in Christ alone; we labor to walk it out
A new owner — Letting Christ renovate your marriage

  • Self-Discrepancy: Who We Are vs Who We Want To Be
The gap between who we are and who we want to be, and why the answer is Christ, not a better version of you.

    About This Episode

If we are honest, we all recognize a discrepancy between who we are and who we desire to be. Aaron and Jennifer kick off 2023 by confessing a difficult season of irritability and disconnection in their own marriage, and how God used it to highlight the gap between their words and their walk. Jennifer shares why discrepancy became her word for the year, and together they explore self-discrepancy theory, the frustration it produces, and the freedom of Romans 8:1. The answer, they say, is not striving toward a better version of yourself, but surrendering to Christ and abiding in Him.

Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

  • The Power of Forgiveness in Marriage: How To Forgive Your Spouse When You Don't Feel Like It
Why Jesus commands forgiveness, why it feels so unnatural, and why reconciliation takes two

    About This Episode

Forgiveness is the relief of tension in a relationship that has endured offense or conflict. Aaron and Jennifer compare holding onto an offense to stretching a band across your chest until your muscles ache, and letting go brings relief to the one who forgives. They work through the questions so many spouses wrestle with: why forgive when I feel they are wrong, how can I forgive if they have not repented, and what if they do it again? Looking at Matthew 6 and the parable Jesus told Peter in Matthew 18, they show that forgiveness goes against our natural defenses and can only be done in the power of the Holy Spirit, out of obedience to God's Word. They close by separating forgiveness from reconciliation and praying that couples would be quick to forgive and quick to reconcile.

The band analogy — why holding onto an offense hurts the one who holds it
Hard questions — forgiving when you feel they are wrong, when they have not repented, or when it happens again
Why Jesus commands forgiveness — Matthew 6:12-15 and why forgiveness is not a natural response
Seventy times seven — Peter's question in Matthew 18 and the 490 connection to Daniel's 70-week prophecy
Forgiveness vs. reconciliation — forgiveness takes one, reconciliation takes two
Trusting God with the other person — forgiving even when reconciliation is not possible
Weekly challenge — go on a fun date night together, even when it's cold outside

    Scripture Referenced

    Matthew 6:12-15; Matthew 18:21-35; 1 John 2:1-2; Matthew 26:28; Acts 10:43; Ephesians 1:7; Daniel 9

  • Doing Hard Things Together in Marriage: Lessons From Our Chicken Coop
What a 400-square-foot chicken coop taught us about counting the cost and finishing hard things together

    About This Episode

This episode is not a chicken coop how-to. It is the story of what Aaron and Jennifer learned about working together to finish a hard thing. After taking in 23 chickens, they built a 400-square-foot coop out of recycled pole-barn lumber, and the project stretched them. They share the wisdom they gained in hindsight: count the cost before committing, value your spouse's wise insight, avoid throwing a wrench in the project by starting something new halfway through, and lean on each other's encouragement when you feel like quitting. Every marriage will face hard things together, whether a DIY project, a job, a ministry opportunity, or raising kids, and they hope their story helps you persevere and remember that your children are watching how you finish.

Don't start something new mid-stream — how a landscaping detour slowed the coop down

  • Does Your Past Baggage Affect Your Present Marriage?
The hurts, fears, and lies we carry into marriage, and four steps to let God clean them out

    About This Episode

Using the picture of a backpack or laundry bag, Aaron and Jennifer discuss the kinds of baggage we might still be lugging around in life and marriage: past hurts, addictions, fears, and lies we believe about ourselves. Often these things are subconscious, but for the believer, God eventually works them to the surface. They share personal stories, including Aaron's harsh and argumentative communication style and the identity markers he held onto out of insecurity, and they talk about the difference between a thoughtful response and a quick reaction. Because it is easy to see our spouse's faults and hard to see our own, they offer four actionable steps for cleaning out baggage and invite you to let God adjust, heal, or eliminate whatever is holding you back from a peaceful, joyful marriage.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Aaron's baggage — a harsh communication style and the insecurity behind it
The plank in your own eye — why we see our spouse's faults more clearly than our own
Four steps to clean it out — humble yourself, confess it, pray for transformation, and request accountability

  • Questions to Ask Your Spouse: A Light and Candid Conversation
Unscripted questions about childhood, fears, parenting, and purpose, and how light talks build closeness

    About This Episode

Sometimes all we need is a light and candid conversation with our spouse. In this episode, Aaron and Jennifer take turns answering questions and give their unscripted, candid answers about childhood memories, favorite foods, irrational fears, parenting, careers, and moments they would relive. They even discuss whether to have a sixth child. The format models how easy, lighthearted conversations can build closeness and quality time in marriage, no matter how long you have been together. They reflect that what makes them unique as a couple is their flexibility and willingness to throw ideas at the wall and enjoy the journey more than the end result, and they close by talking about purpose: following Christ as the one purpose that permeates marriage, parenting, and work.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. • God’s Plan vs Ours
When missions, family, and business didn't go as planned, and what God was really after: obedience

    About This Episode

How do you respond when your plans are not fulfilled as you hoped? Aaron and Jennifer look back on how missionary work, having five kids, and homeschooling all went differently than they first imagined, and they share a business example where orders from Hobby Lobby surged and then shrank, forcing Aaron to surrender his sense of security. Aaron pushes back on oversimplified open-door, closed-door discernment and suggests that God is mostly after our obedience and how we respond, which is our sanctification, rather than simply revealing which path to take. They offer trust, humility, and stillness as antidotes when life doesn't go to plan, anchored in Proverbs 16:9: the heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

    Resources from This Episode

This week's episode is brought to you by our book "Marriage After God: Chasing Boldly After God’s Purpose for Your Life Together." One of our motivations for writing Marriage After God was to help inspire couples to consider how they can use what they have to serve God together. Sometimes we need that “out of the box” thinking to get us to see the bigger picture or possibilities that lay right in front of us. Instead of seeing ministry as a Sunday service practice, we encourage couples to see their marriage as a ministry, a reflection of God’s love in this world.
