  • How To Comfort Your Spouse During Hard Times
Why comforting others doesn't come naturally to Aaron, and what Scripture says about showing up anyway

    About This Episode

We all need to be comforted at times, and many of us have not been comforted when we needed it most. In this episode we get honest about how hard comforting others has been for Aaron, who tends to jump to solutions, fill the silence, or push people to move on. Then we walk through what Scripture says: we are told to comfort one another, we can comfort because the God of all comfort has comforted us, and we need to rise up and go to people instead of waiting to be asked. We also talk about boundaries that protect your marriage, discerning the right response, and simple ways to take the edge off someone's pain.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

    In This Episode

Why comforting doesn't come naturally — Aaron's honest struggle with compassion and awkward silence
The most comforting things we've done for each other — holding close and praying
We are told to comfort — 2 Corinthians 13:11 as part of every believer's job description
Boundaries that protect your marriage — comforting others as a team, not alone with the opposite sex
We comfort because we've been comforted — the God of all comfort in 2 Corinthians 1
Rise up and go — why we shouldn't wait for hurting people to ask
When comfort is refused — don't let rejection stop you from trying
The appropriate response — weeping with those who weep and knowing when to be silent
Practical ways to lift a burden — groceries, a text, flowers, childcare, a phone call, and always prayer

  • Your Identity in Christ: Don't Forget Who Is at Work Within You
Every believer is a necessary part of the body of Christ, filled with the same Spirit and called to be used

    About This Episode

Are you a Christian? Do you love God and His Word? Then you are a vital and necessary part of the body of Christ. In this episode we want to encourage you in your identity in Christ, to remind you that you are not lesser no matter what part of the body you are, and, if you are struggling with doubt, to trust that God has given you His Spirit just like every other believer. We look at how old identities melt away in Christ, why comparison and self-disqualification are really pride, how God filled the whole temple in 2 Chronicles 7, and why the answer is simply to say yes to God with what He has given you.

Everyone has a purpose — each part of the body is unique and necessary, your marriage included

A heart check on comparison — why "I'm not the one for the job" is actually pride
Members of one another — Romans 12 and the connected body
No lesser portion of the Spirit — God filled the whole temple, not part of it
You are God's temple — 1 Corinthians 6 and 2 Corinthians 6 on His dwelling in us
The power at work within us — Ephesians 3 and Christ in you, the hope of glory
Say yes to God — offering your table, skills, and time for His use

  • What Real Love Looks Like in Marriage: Are You Really Loving?
Love is easy to say. Scripture shows the proof is in how we act, starting with our spouse

    About This Episode

In our modern-day culture, the word love is used for everything from pizza and board games to our kids and our spouse, and as a result it has been diluted. So who gets to define love? In this episode we look at how God, who is love, defines it, and why the proof of love is in our actions, not just our words. We share the first mention of love in the Bible, in Genesis 22, as a picture of the gospel, walk through 1 Corinthians 13 as a heart check on patience and kindness, and talk about initiating love instead of waiting for your spouse to go first, because we love because He first loved us.

Words that match actions — why a disconnect between them breeds distrust
The first mention of love — Abraham, Isaac, and a foreshadow of the gospel
Initiating love — we love because He first loved us
The 1 Corinthians 13 heart check — was I really being patient and kind?
Don't let your love grow cold — abiding in God's Word

  • Sabbath Rest: What the Bible Says and How Our Family Practices It
From Genesis 2 to Hebrews 4: why Jesus is our true Sabbath and how our family practices weekly rest

    About This Episode

Rest is a wonderful and amazing idea, and we are so glad God came up with it. The word rest in the Old Testament is Sabbath, so in this episode we talk about rest, the Sabbath, and why it matters in our lives. We trace rest from God resting on the seventh day, through a Hebrew word study on sabbath, to Israel coming out of 400 years of work. We explain how the Fourth Commandment is fulfilled in Christ, who invites the weary to come to Him, and why keeping a Sabbath is good but never makes us holy. Then we share the simple rhythms our family uses to rest each week.

God rested first — the seventh day in Genesis 2
A Hebrew word study — what the letters of sabbath reveal about the Father
Israel's first Sabbath — rest for people who had only known 400 years of work
Lord of the Sabbath — "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath"
The Fourth Commandment fulfilled — Jesus himself is our rest
Resting from our works — Galatians and not going back to earning what Christ finished
Sabbath and holiness — why keeping it is good but doesn't make us holy
How our family rests — no agenda on Sundays, fellowship, no technology, and chores wait until Monday

Delight is an active verb: choosing joy in God, your spouse, and your kids instead of just coexisting

    About This Episode

Do you delight in the Lord? How about your spouse? In this episode we talk about the joy of delighting in the Lord and your spouse rather than simply existing with them. God is not looking for a dry and gray relationship with us, and neither is our spouse. We break delight down as an active verb in three parts: delighting in the Lord and His Word, delighting in your spouse, and delighting in your children, with a bonus reminder that the Lord delights in us. Along the way we share some favorite stargazing memories and talk about what intentional attention looks like at home. Let's learn to delight in each other and the Lord!

  • Sanctification in Marriage: God's Not Done With Us
A snarky question on a new leather couch and what sanctification really looks like in a marriage

    About This Episode

If you are a Christian, then you are being sanctified. But what does that mean, why does it need to happen, and what might it look like? In this episode we discuss how the Lord sanctifies us because He loves us, often using our spouse, our friends, and our circumstances to draw sin out of us. We share a snarky moment over coffee on our new leather couch and the day a friend told Aaron he needed to stop talking to his wife like that. We talk about humility, true repentance, shame versus condemnation, and why we shouldn't play Holy Spirit to our spouse. He's not done with us, and He's not done with you.

    About Aaron & Jennifer Smith

Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. • Making Changes Together In Marriage
Pray, seek wise counsel, count the cost, decide as a team, and remember it's okay to change the change

    About This Episode

Change is inevitable. Some love it, some hate it, and sometimes it can't be avoided. In this episode we talk about how we make changes together as a married couple, whether change is forced on us from the outside or comes from an inner conviction. We share our practical framework: pray and surrender, get objective wise counsel, go to Scripture, think soberly about what a change will cost, listen well, and decide as a team, remembering it's okay to change the change. We also share a change we're making with Marriage After God: ending the season early to focus on our family and on writing children's books and a family devotional.

Avoiding or chasing change — Aaron's long-beard story and the pull of fleshly cravings
Pray and surrender — keeping in step with the Spirit
Seek wise counsel — objective friends instead of building a one-sided case
Go to Scripture — Joseph's story and learning how to respond
Count the cost — the full glass of water and the ice cubes
Listen and decide as a team — no wishy-washiness and no root of bitterness
Bring your kids along — preparing their hearts for change

  • Our Role In Cultivating The Soil Of Our Children's Hearts
What the Parable of the Sower teaches parents about preparing kids' hearts to receive the gospel

    About This Episode

Parenting is not always easy, yet it is a worthy and noble task. In this episode we look at the Parable of the Sower and ask how each kind of soil got that way, and what that means for us as parents. We can't save our children, but it's our job to work the ground of their hearts so they're ready to receive the gospel. Drawing on Deuteronomy 11:19 and Proverbs 22:6, we share practical ways to do that: teaching the Bible throughout the day, giving kids opportunities to pray, teaching them who God is, modeling repentance and redemption, and living out our faith. Our garden, hard soil, and sunflowers following the sun help paint the picture.

  • Marriage Inspiration From Some Unlikely People In The Bible
What Epaphras, Jethro, Lois, Eunice and the Ethiopian eunuch teach couples about faith and marriage

    About This Episode

What can a few overlooked people in the Bible teach us about marriage? In this episode, Aaron and Jennifer Smith model how couples can casually dig into Scripture together by looking at four lesser-known figures who have encouraged them lately. Epaphras was a beloved, faithful servant who planted the church in Colossae, struggled in prayer for the believers there, and spoke well of others. Jethro gave Moses bold, wise counsel to delegate and multiply leaders rather than burn out alone. Timothy's grandmother Lois and mother Eunice passed down a legacy of faith. And the Ethiopian eunuch was a humble, teachable seeker who was baptized as soon as he heard the gospel. Each story is applied to marriage and everyday faith.
