  • CATFA 008: The Tesseract!
Minute Eight: From A Secret Compartment to a PredictionJoining us on the show today and all week, we have Kurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast. In the eighth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Schmidt very easily figures out the secret button for the secret compartment on the secret wall in the secret tower. And there it is – the Tesseract. We saw this during the post-credits sequence in Thor and it definitely was glowing like this, not dull and lifeless like that first one Schmidt found. That’s how we know this is the real one.
    That blue glow is fantastic.
Meanwhile, he and the Tower Keeper debate about who’s meant to see this. Doesn’t seem like Schmidt gives a damn. He’ll look anyway because, you know, he’s the bad guy. But is the sound we hear diagetic? Or is it just for us?
Weaving has a great look, by the way. We give shout outs to the costume designer and production designer.
We end on a prediction the Tower Keeper makes to Schmidt. We don’t quite hear Schmidt’s full response, but the prediction that Schmidt will burn certainly is menacing
There’s of course the nod to Raiders of the Lost Ark, which of course is a nod to Hitler’s actual digs in the desert. And all of that is perfect coming from director Joe Johnston, who worked on visual effects for Raiders.
It’s a fun minute of blue discoveries and threats. Tune in!

  • CATFA 007: A Return to Yggdrasil
Minute Seven: From Shattering the Tesseract to A Snake in the RootsJoining us on the show today and all week, we have Kurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast. In the seventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Schmidt, the bumbling fool, drops the Tesseract and shatters it! His lieutenant is shocked! But wait, what’s this? It was a fake?!??! That Schmidt turns out to be one smart cookie. And the Tower Keeper knew it all along. They know you don’t bury something like that.
We talk about Schmidt’s threat and the Tower Keeper’s almost-too-subtle gesture that tells Schmidt that it’s hidden in the bas-relief of Yggdrasil on the wall. But where?
Schmidt seems to know an awful lot about the world tree, and we do as well thanks to Thor last season. But turns out there are snakes in its roots. We talk a bit about the snakes and what they’re up to.
Schmidt seems to know what he’s looking for. Did he know all along and was fooling with the Tower Keeper? He zeroes right in on the snake head as he talks about Asgardian history.
He’s getting closer and closer to what he’s looking for. Tune in!

  • CATFA 006: The Pier One Version
Minute Six: From Schmidt’s Big Entrance to a Fake TesseractJoining us on the show today and all week, we have Kurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast. In the sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We play the IMDb game with Schmidt (or is it Shmidt?) himself, Aussie actor Hugo Weaving. This is his big reveal, after all. Well, as Weaving with a human face. You know what we mean.We chat about his conversation with the Tower Keeper, and of course talk about the trope of the villain’s “we’re two sides of the same coin” speech. There seem to be Hydra logos everywhere, by the way. Schmidt’s buttons, his hat, his lapel pin. Then we get to see just how strong he is. That lid on the sarcophagus his troops couldn’t budge? He pushes off with one small heave. So there’s clearly something going on with this guy. He reveals the dead Nordic King mummified inside the sarcophagus, and what’s it holding?Lo and behold! Is that the Tesseract? He calls is such, but then the minute ends.Quite the cubic cliffhanger. While something’s happening to Tower Keeper Filch, the Uber Tank backs up and Schmidt’s Coupe pulls up in all of it’s ridiculously cool glory. Those headlights. So cool. We see jackboots walking toward the building and a silhouette in the hole in the wall, but who is it?

  • CATFA 005: The Fist of God
In this minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ the walls come tumbling down at Castle Rock Tower. Jan’s crushed. Hydra troops invade. And a silhouetted figure emanating pure evil shows up in a ridiculously cool Coupe.

  • CATFA 004: SHIELD and the Shield
Minute Four: From Ship Exploration to Castle ProtectionIn the fourth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Our lieutenant’s busy looking at the chair in the cockpit, but the SHIELD tech discovers Captain America’s shield. But how do they know what it is? Is the history of WWII SHIELD operations part of SHIELD school? Why does SHIELD Lieutenant Gorman assume Captain America’s alive?
We don’t get to find out because we cut back in time to 1942 in Tønsberg, Norway – a location we discussed early last season when King Laufey and his Frost Giants invaded Midgard and froze all the villagers, ships, and houses in Tønsberg before Odin stopped him. But now, we focus on a tower. This tower is Castle Rock Tower, a real place in the real Tønsberg but designed more as a cathedral in this MCU version of Tønsberg. Here, we find Jan and the Tower Keeper Filch talking about something they’ve been hiding. It’s all very mysterious. Plus, a lot of rumbling’s going on.
And a deleted scene! Our first one includes a reveal of Hydra’s Uber tank.
We’re still in mysterious setup land. Fun times. Tune in!
Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!NOTE: Andy does some crazy math to calculate how long it's been since we last were in Tønsberg, Norway. It's not 2907 years, but 977 years. Andy was going BC for some reason, even though it's clearly stated as 965 A.D. at the start of Thor. Sorry for any confusion!Film Sundries

  • CATFA 003: A Snowy Interior?
Minute Three: From Outside the Plane to Inside the PlaneIn the third minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...This minute is all about SHIELD tech and ship exploration. Where did they get this fantastic laser? Can you really drill with lasers? How long have they been here excavating this plane? And do they have any sense about what they’re entering?
We get the initial exploration of the interior with our SHIELD Lieutenant and SHIELD tech, and we debate about how canted the plane is. Should it be more tilted?
It’s a snowy episode filled with mystery. Tune in!

Minute One: From Logos to a Silhouette in the SnowIn the first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...It’s still Paramount! It’s still Marvel’s flipbook logo. But there’s a lot of wind and some of Alan Silvestri’s music.
Pete and Andy are hosting this season, and kick things off with a bit of their history of this film and the Captain America character in general. We talk about the snowy mystery we have as a setup for this film, and what we knew about Cap’s origins getting frozen.
We talk about threading the needle and truck headlights, as well as HMUVs. Plus how red light is more visible from longer distances and weird vehicle POVs.
It’s about time we get things kicked off for this season. Tune in!

  • Thor 115: So... How Did Loki Get to Earth So Quickly?
Minute One Hundred Fifteen: From Legends to Loki’s PuppetryIn the one hundred fifteenth minute of Kenneth Branagh’s 2011 film Thor...
    • “Legend tells us one thing, history another.” What the hell is Fury actually saying here? Is this just a line that’s meant to sound cool? It’s not that clear when taken by itself.
    • And then we have the Tesseract set up in some sort of case that makes it look like a bomb. What the heck? Why introduce it to us like this? It’s very confusing.
    • Does this mean Steve’s awake now? No, we’ve gone through the timeline and he’s definitely still frozen.
    • This may be the first time Nick Fury smiles in the MCU.
    • But then Loki shows up. As a reflection. So that means he’s invisible? How long has he been tailing Erik? Or was he drawn here by the Tesseract itself? None of this makes that much sense.
    • But Loki ain’t looking that good, so at least there are signs he’s been flying through space for a very long time.
    • It’s not one of our favorite post-credits scenes, but it works well enough.
It’s Whedon’s frustrating dip into nonsense to end this season. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries
