  • CATFA 018: Schmidt’s Schmee is Whichcock?
Minute Eighteen: From Brooklyn Actually to the Return of the Snake DrawerJoining us again, we have Will Johnson and Don Shanahan from the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast. In the eighteenth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Erskine finds out Steve is actually from Brooklyn. Was this part of the test all along?Steve finally gets that 1A stamp he’s been waiting for. What a great sigh Steve gives. We debate if it’s a Chris Evans sigh or a Leander Deeny sigh. Hard to tell. Regardless, it’s a great end to this scene. The story shifts to the Austrian Alps where we find Schmidt in his mountain lair with Dr. Arnim Zola, his #2. The lair is a ridiculously impossible villain lair but we kinda love it. They work on harnessing the Tesseract energy but Zola’s a bit concerned. We chat about Toby Jones and his films, as well as the character history of Dr. Arnim Zola. It’s a big character change. Are we fine with this version? What is Erskine doing though? Is this camera a key part of the Tesseract science? Or is he prepping cameras for the Valkyrie? And is he being overly cautious? What would’ve happened if he had been recruited instead of Erskine? There are similarities...Schmidt pores over old images involving cosmic cubes. We discuss these images and why he’s still looking at them.We wrap up our scene with Steve and Abraham then head to the Alps to meet Dr. Zola. Tune in!

  • CATFA 017: I Don’t Like Bullies
Minute Seventeen: From Questions About His Tests to A ChanceJoining us again, we have Don Shanahan and Will Johnson from the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast! In the seventeenth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Dr. Erskine has a folder about Steve. What’s in it? Should Steve be more concerned? Dr. Erskine seems very nice so maybe he’ll be okay? This is a big minute because of the conversation between Erskine and Steve. Dr. Erskine wonders if Steve wants to kill Nazis, but Steve’s reply surprises a bit – “I don’t want to kill anybody. I don’t like Nazis.” What great motivation for this character! It’s a big moment – perhaps one of the biggest for this character’s setup – and we’re here for it.There’s a nature to setting Steve up this way where he’s already the hero. He’s just not a superhero yet. That’s powerful and is a different story than what we’ve had so far with Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, or Thor Odinson. That speaks to the nature of this type of story as well where Steve isn’t changing in the film – he’s changing those around him. And they do it without falling into the traps of jingoism.Steve passes the test as Dr. Erskine says he can give him a chance... but only a chance. It’s perfect. We love this moment. Big minute for Steve that defines so much of his character throughout the MCU. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • CATFA 016: Steve the Criminal
Minute Sixteen: From Caught! to GermanyJoining us on this episode, we have Don Shanahan and Will Johnson from the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast! In the sixteenth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve’s busted! His criminal past has caught up with him. We talk about the nature of an ego crime in this case and why it’s deemed okay. To a certain extent, there’s also FOMO. But it also plays a lot into the world of WWII propaganda... even if it’s not too overt. (Well, the posters on the walls have certainly been overt.)But is this entire thing actually a part of Dr. Erskine’s test? And has Erskine been watching Steve for a while now? Either way, Dr. Erskine is such a nice guy and sets us all at ease.We talk a bit about restrictions to getting into the army or navy, including pimples. Pimples? Of course, all of these lists really were dependent on where we were in the war and how badly they needed men.And how about the Strategic Scientific Reserve? How did they come about? What about SHIELD?We chat about Dr. Erskine’s address. Is that really there? Should Steve react more to his accent? And how will he react when he finds out Dr. Erskine is from Germany? We kick off a great week of conversation with Don and Will in today’s episode. • CATFA 015: The Little Hugger
Minute Fifteen: From A Goodbye Between Friends to Wrapping Up the ExamJoining us one last time, we have Rob Kubasko and Kyle Olson from seasons two and three. In the fifteenth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Bucky and Steve are at odds. Again. This feels like a conversation they’ve had many times before, and likely are only having it again now for the benefit of the audience and for Erskine. But it works so it’s okay.
Bucky starts to leave, but they each say a catchphrase and that reminds them how much they mean to each other, so they have a nice goodbye hug. It’s a great moment, and Bucky gets to walk off with both Bonnie and Connie. Not bad for his last night before deployment.
Steve heads in for his physical and Erskine follows along. What could he be up to?
It’s goodbyes and recruitment shenanigans. Tune in!

Minute Fourteen: From I WANT YOU to Erskine Wants SteveJoining us again, we have Kyle Olson and Rob Kubasko from seasons two and three. In the fourteenth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve sees the iconic I WANT YOU Army recruitment poster. We talk about the design of J.M. Flagg’s poster as well as some other characters created to inspire Americans – Columbia and Brother Jonathan. We talk about more posters once Steve goes inside – one recruiting for the Navy and another for the Marines.
We chat a bit about monorails. And stilts. And we try to figure out what that device would be called that reflects Steve’s face in the blank face of the soldier, but no luck.
Abraham Erskine turns up lurking in the hall, but why? Is there a reason he’s here? We talk about Stanley Tucci, who we just love.
It’s a minute where Steve’s being pulled ever closer to his destiny. Plus, monorail! Tune in!

  • CATFA 013: Nobody Talks About Poor Gerard
Minute Thirteen: From Howard Stark to Something Catching Steve’s EyeJoining us again we have back from seasons two and three, it’s Rob Kubasko and Kyle Olson! In the thirteenth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Howard Stark shows up, and it’s the third actor we’ve had play him so far in the MCU – this time it’s Dominic Cooper. We do a little IMDb game with him, but it’s pretty tough. We talk a bit about the Howard Hughes vibe they imbue him with in this movie.
Howard’s trying to make a flying car with Stark Gravitic Reversion Technology. Phew! That’s a mouthful! And clearly it doesn’t quite work well. C’est la vie.
Remember those peanuts Steve mysteriously bought before entering the pavilion? Well, he tries offering some to his date who gives him a look of revulsion which just seems... too much. So Steve looks around and something catches his attention. But what is it?
Nothing like a return to Howard Stark for Kyle and Rob. Tune in!

  • CATFA 012: The Synthetic Man
Minute Twelve: From Cheering Steve Up to the Start of Something StarkyJoining us on the show today and all week, it’s Kyle Olson and Rob Kubasko from seasons two and three! In the twelfth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve’s glum, so what’s Bucky supposed to do? He tries cheering Steve up, of course! But let’s face it – it’s his last night here before shipping off so he doesn’t want to hang out with his blue friend. So why not take Steve to the future?
Bucky shows Steve his newspaper. Turns out, the World Expo of Tomorrow’s happening and so they head off through a wonderful dissolve. There, they meet Connie and Bonnie, though it really seems like Bucky has two dates and Steve has none. At some point, Steve mysteriously buys some plot peanuts and we get to talk about the fantastic Synthetic Man Easter egg.
We end the minute with the introduction to Stark’s show and have a brief chat about a subtle but interesting line change from script to screen.
Rob and Kyle love talking about Expos. Tune in!

Minute Eleven: From Trying to Do This All Day to Bucky’s OrdersJoining us on the show today and all week, we have Rob Kubasko and Kyle Olson from seasons two and three! In the eleventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve says possibly his most iconic line from the MCU – “I can do this all day.” Yes you can, Steve. Yes you can. But Bucky won’t let you because he interrupts! That’s right! It’s time to meet Sebastian Stan as James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes.
We bid a fond farewell to our Loud Jerk as Steve and Bucky talk about Steve’s failed attempts at enlisting, and the fact that Bucky got his orders. Plus, we look at posters on the wall which leads us down a Brooklyn Dodgers rabbit hole.
Bucky and Steve together at last! Okay, for the first time! Tune in!

  • CATFA 010: Why Are the Loud Jerks Always So Big?
Minute Ten: From 4F to a Trash Can LidJoining us on the show today and all week, we have Kurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast. In the tenth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...The doc seems to think he’s saving Steve’s life, but this is Steve’s movie so we know it doesn’t end here. Steve takes solace by going to the pictures. We find him as they’re watching the newsreel. And that just seems even more of a knife in the gut for Steve as it reminds him that even little Timmy is helping the war efforts, but Steve can’t. It works great.
We discuss the other people in the audience and how the newsreel’s affecting them all. And we talk about the Loud Jerk and how Steve again shows his heroic side by telling the bully to shut up.
That means Steve has to now fight this guy in the alley. And he picks up a trash can lid that looks awfully like a shield. Hrm...
We’re liking this Steve kid more and more. Tune in!

  • CATFA 009: The Crimson Octopus
Minute Nine: From The Killing of a Nordic Tower Keeper to Asthma IneligibilityJoining us on the show today and all week, we have Kurtis Findlay from the Epic Marvel Podcast. In the ninth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Turns out, Schmidt was telling the Tower Keeper that he already has burned. Is that metaphoric, like that he’s so evil he’s already in Hell? Or is he referencing the experiments he underwent to become Red Skull? Or both? Certainly seems that way as he kills the Tower Keeper in cold blood and orders the village executed.
Plus, there’s a nice hint regarding the impending red skull.
We jump through time and land a few years later in Brooklyn to see a puny Steve Rogers trying to get approved for army duty. So much to discuss about Chris Evans, the effects to create the puny version of him, and of course Leander Deeny, who is Evans’ body double for the smaller body size. We also talk about newspapers and historical events, trying to gauge when this likely happened.
Even though we know this is Flag Day, 1943.
The 4F Doc doesn’t admit Steve, even though he seems eager. But we learn more about his parents and get a sense of him as a hero. And he tells Steve he’d be rejected for his asthma alone.
We finally get to meet Steve Rogers. Tune in!
