  • CATFA 038: The Thirstiest Minute
Minute Thirty-Eight: From Full-On Hotness to Full-On SuspiciousJoining us on this episode, we have Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell from the Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! In the thirty-eighth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...It’s the movie’s hottest, thirstiest minute! As Nathan says, there’s Before Minute 38 in the MCU and After Minute 38. This is that moment when we finally see the new and improved Steve Rogers in all his sweaty, glistening glory. So how much did Chris Evans have to work out to get this look for us to enjoy? But why did they pick those pants for him to wear? And what happened to the belt and pads that were holding him down? Did his sudden growth push all of them off him?We talk about the nature of getting actors to look this way and how challenging it is for the actors – and potentially harmful to their health. And how does this compare to how women’s bodies were treated in the 80s and elsewhere? And is it healthy to keep one-upping the adonis figures? Where’s the line with male gaze and female gaze? How would this scene have played if it was Captain Carter stepping out of the Vita-Ray Chamber?Speaking of Peggy, how about that fantastic moment where she can barely contain herself from touching Steve’s chest? It’s one of Nathan’s favorite moments in the movie. But why is Howard’s reaction to say Dr. Erskine did it, not him? Is he disregarding his own involvement? Or is this what we need to believe the Super Soldier Serum’s formula dies with Erskine?Anyone have some water? Cuz we’re all thirsty! Tune in!

Minute Thirty-Seven: From Some Random Doctor’s Appearance to Howard Stark’s Expectant Glasses RemovalJoining us on this episode, we have Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell from the Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! In the thirty-seventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...The experiment continues. We talk about side shields and eyewear, particularly about those not wearing any. Why not? Was it in the Tucch’s contract? What about Jones or Atwell and everyone else upstairs in the observation booth? Is the glass treated so it’s not so bright for them? But then why is Phillips squinting? It’s a bit baffling. It’s pretty funny that Steve says, “I can do this.” Why not all day, Steve? We talk a bit about Joe Johnston as a director and the new docuseries Light and Magic. Quite the background he has! This minute has us so close to finding out if Dr. Erskine’s mad science experiment will work. What will happen? • CATFA 036: Goodbye, Skinny Steve!
Minute Thirty-Six: From Painful Injections to 40%!Joining us on this episode, we have Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell from the Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! In the thirty-sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve’s dosed up with super soldier serum. What’s up with that breaking the fourth wall as he opens his eyes in shock or pain or both? Turns out, it was scripted that his eyes were glowing blue. Yeah. Very much like Hulk, but blue. We’re glad Johnston didn’t go that route. We talk about Steve’s charm, always ready with a witty line even when he’s about to be transformed. But how much does he actually know is about to happen to him? We love on the Tucch and Dominic a bit as Steve’s benevolent father figures, and we love the period look. Plus, we talk about cheats in movie making and say goodbye to the Leander Deeny/Chris Evans blend.Things are in motion. What’s going to happen to Steve? Minute Thirty-Five: From Another Step Towards Annihilation to Serum Injection!Joining us on the show today, we’re joined by Matthew Costello, author of ‘Secret Identity Crisis: Comic Books and the Unmasking of Cold War America’.In the thirty-fifth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Needle-phobics beware! This is an injection-heavy minute. But first, we have Erskine’s speech. We feel it invokes certain elements from famous American speeches from days of yore. It’s his Ends Justify the Means speech for sure. But does he know this will actually work? How does he know the serum’s ready now? And what’s he told Steve? But this is science in wartime. It does seem rushed though... Maybe that’s why there are no needles going into his legs and why he’s still wearing his pants? There’s also a discussion about the origins of VitaRays and how they fit into Cap’s backstory. The penicillin’s not so bad, but how about the blue serum, Steve? Tune in!

Minute Thirty-Four: From Climbing into the Rebirth Device to the Start of Erskine’s SpeechJoining us on the show today, we’re joined by Matthew Costello, author of ‘Secret Identity Crisis: Comic Books and the Unmasking of Cold War America’.In the thirty-fourth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We kick this minute off with a discussion about accents. Whose works the best in the film? Steve lays down in the cradle of the rebirth device and finds out that Dr. Erskine drank all the Schnapps. How does Erskine do at making Steve feel comfortable? Do you think Steve’s nervous when he sees Howard Stark’s involved? Is Howard nervous about his abilities to get the job done? Or is he just frustrated by the city of Brooklyn’s ability to live up to his standards? How about the microphone feedback trope? How about Erskine asking Agent Carter to leave? And we discuss the connection between Walt Disney and Howard Stark.Steve’s getting ready for the big procedure! Tune in!

They head down the steps into the rebirth lab where Dr. Erskine greets them. What do we think of this space? But how much have they actually told Steve as far as what he should expect? Does he ever seem scared? If he is, he hides it and remains stoic. Meanwhile, Colonel Phillips arrives in the observation booth upstairs where he greets Senator Brandt and complains about funding, then meets Fred Clemson from the State Department. Do we buy the Senator being so clueless? We’re getting ready to party in the rebirth lab. Minute Thirty-Two: From an Antique Entrance to a Secret Lab EntranceJoining us on the show today, we’re joined by Matthew Costello, author of ‘Secret Identity Crisis: Comic Books and the Unmasking of Cold War America’.In the thirty-second minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Is it an antique shop? Or shoppe? Or something else? How do they remember the secret conversational code? We certainly get a laugh out of the original scripted version. It’s very much a journey from the past to the future. There’s the antique shop owner as played by Amanda Walker, who we love. She’s also got a secret button and a tommy gun. What do we think of that greenish medical look? How much does the SRR actually own on this block? But why Brooklyn and not an Army Base?Time for a secret army base. Tune in!

Minute Thirty-One: From Doors Shut in Faces to an Antique EntranceJoining us on the show today, we’re joined by Matthew Costello, author of ‘Secret Identity Crisis: Comic Books and the Unmasking of Cold War America’.In the thirty-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Peggy and Steve continue their drive to a mystery destination. Is this where the romance starts? Or is she still just seeing him as a scientific research subject? We discuss a bit about Matthew’s interest in the Cold War and how he’s integrated pop culture and comics into his studies and teachings. We also dig into Steve’s role as the everyman and how he works in this film as well as the franchise – as well as his twinning w/the Red Skull. But why would the everyman need a super soldier serum injection? To that end, what’s authentic in Steve? His heart? It’s very juju. We do ponder the fact that this is only eight days after we first met Steve. Is this where the connection really begins? • CATFA 030: He’s Gone Full Baby-Man!
Minute Thirty: From Schmidt’s Answer to Peggy Knowing a Little of What That’s LikeJoining us for the last time this week, it’s Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg from the Ghouls in the House podcast. In the thirtieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Schmidt reveals that he’s already given the order to find Dr. Erskine. Is that a hint of jealousy we see from Zola? Or is his ego bruised? Then is Schmidt’s turning on of the lights part of a test? And how about when he asks him how the portrait looks? We love the clear relief on the portrait artist’s face. He’s happy with Zola’s answer for sure! And with that, we’re back in Brooklyn. Stickball. Signs. And a car carrying Steve and Peggy. But what do we think of puny Steve here? And where are we with buying her draw to him? Do we buy the chemistry? Does the MCU have a couples problem? The romance starts here. Or does it...? Tune in!

  • CATFA 029: Red All Over
Minute Twenty-Nine: From Zola’s Entrance to Zola’s QuestionJoining us for this episode, we have Doctor Arnold T. Blumberg from ATL Publishing! In the twenty-ninth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We talk opera in this minute. What’s going on with the opera edits here? Did opera fans complain? Regardless, it’s big and emphatic for the scene. Zola sees the portrait and if you freeze the movie at just the right moment, you get a flash of Red Skull. But has Zola not seen this look? Is it just too shocking? Is Schmidt ashamed of his look? Or perhaps it’s a power relationship thing? And how about that portrait artist? He’s a pure delight and the actor delivers in his wordless performance. So what exactly is Dr. Zola’s role? And we now know that Schmidt is trying to find Dr. Erskine, but it’s not to get him back. Seems he’s keen on destroying him and his experiments.Plenty of opera talk in this one. Tune in!
