  • CATFA 028: And YOU Get a Bottle of Schnapps!
Minute Twenty-Eight: From Strength and Compassion to Wagner and ZolaJoining us again, we have Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg from the Ghouls in the House Podcast! In the twenty-eighth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We finally get to the actual reasons Dr. Erskine picked Steve – he’ll understand the strength and compassion. Based on the drills we saw, were those the right things to figure this out? Perhaps it speaks to the nature of Erskine having to work with the military team in their search. Our favorite moment of this minute – and probably this whole week – is the Schnapps scene. It’s so funny how the Tucch handles it. We get a little dose of opera here as Zola walks into the lab too. Does it actually feel like 1943 though? We really want some Schnapps but Erskine won’t share. Tune in!

  • CATFA 027: A Modern Fairy Tale About the Guy Who Went Wrong
Minute Twenty-Seven: From a Superior Man to a Weak ManJoining us for the episode, it’s Doctor of the Dead himself, Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg! In the twenty-seventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...It’s still the flashback montage about Schmidt. He and Erskine obviously knew each other and Schmidt wants Erskine to give him the super soldier serum. But it’s Erskine’s perspective so should we trust it? Is Schmidt brilliant? And what about the sepia? Do we wish we saw him morph here? What about the change to the character from the comics? And of course the ‘two sides of the same coin’ conversation comes up yet again, but is that just the foundation of storytelling? And how about this magic elixir? We dig into the foundations of storytelling in this episode. • CATFA 026: We Need a Schmidt-age!
Minute Twenty-Six: From Hitler Invading Germany to Power in the EarthJoining us on the show, we have Dr. Arnold T. Blumberg, Doctor of the Dead!In the twenty-sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Why did they hide the Swastika in the film for the most part? What was Marvel afraid of? We do see it during the montage about Schmidt. There certainly are plenty of Hydra logos! But how about the exposition dump we get here? The Stucch handles it well and we’re not surprised. Is there a sense of father/son dynamic with him and Steve? Does Marvel have a thing for daddy issues? We look at flashbacks in the MCU. We’ve had a number of them by this point. But is this flashback tainted by Dr. Erskine’s perspective? We also talk about Joe Johnston as a director and the structure the MCU’s been using bringing indie directors on and what that means with effects. Does Johnston deliver better here because of his VFX background? And what about Schmidt being a brilliant scientist? It’s a Schmidt-filled flashback minute. • CATFA 025: The Lone Gerbil in the Quonset Hut
Minute Twenty-Five: From a Dummy Grenade to a Bottle of SchnappsJoining us on the episode is Father David Mowry, chaplain of the movies-by-minutes community! In the twenty-fifth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...The Love Feud continues as Father Mowry debates Agent Carter’s feelings for Steve. Is it love? Or is it for science? There is a love dolly for sure with Carter that we don’t get with Col. Phillips or Dr. Erskine. But what about Hodge’s reaction? So they’ve picked their recruit. It’s Steve, of course. So where did the rest of the recruits go? Are they just with the rest of the privates now? And by the way, nice SSR shirt, Steve!Steve has one question for Dr. Erskine. Just one. We won’t get to hear the answer, but we do get to hear the question, which allows for a lot of conversation. And Father Mowry talks about Divine Selection in today’s Christ and the Cape. Minute Twenty-Four: From a Debate About Niceness Versus Guts to the Sacrificial SteveJoining us on the episode is Father David Mowry, chaplain of the movies-by-minutes community! In the twenty-fourth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We learn that Camp Lehigh is Col. Phillips’ base. We also learn he thinks of Steve as a gerbil. But we love that there’s a real sense of peer-to-peer relationship between these two.Again, why do they only do physical tests here, particularly if Dr. Erskine is looking for something more than the physical? And what is the point of this grenade test? Was Phillips expecting it to be tossed in a particular direction? Is the goal to have someone throw themselves on it as a sacrifice? Regardless, can anyone shout “GRENADE!” like Tommy Lee Jones? And what does Father Mowry have to say about altruistic suicide in the Christ and the Cape segment? What’s going to happen with the grenade? • CATFA 023: No Such Thing as a Done Muffin
Minute Twenty-Three: From A Flagpole Fail to A Doubting ColonelJoining us on the episode is Father David Mowry, chaplain of the movies-by-minutes community! In the twenty-third minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We’re enamored with Sergeant Duffy. His throwaway lines always make us laugh. The flagpole challenge is presented and the soldiers fail wonderfully. But what happened 17 years ago? Who got up the flagpole? And what was the prize in those earlier years before Agent Carter was here? This flagpole scene wasn’t scripted so we discuss why it was presumably shot during pickups. That likely explains why Agent Carter’s hair looks different. The big question is does this end up being part of the test to determine who they pick? But where does Carter stand on picking Steve? We know Erskine is pro and Phillips is anti. And is what she’s seeing in Steve in this moment her falling for him or just excited about finding the right recruit? Why is Agent Carter running drills? Shouldn’t she be observing like Dr. Erskine and Col. Phillips are? And why does this feel again like they’re in basic training?Whatever’s going on in this minute, Sergeant Duffy shines today. • CATFA 022: What Exactly Does This Have to Do With the Hand Jive?
Minute Twenty-Two: From Training Montage to Flagpole ShenanigansJoining us on the episode is Father David Mowry, chaplain of the movies-by-minutes community! In the twenty-second minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We’re gonna need a montage! We continue that training montage that we started with Steve in the last minute. Col. Phillips continues monologuing over it and we get a sense as to how inept Steve really is. But what are they looking for exactly? Is there a reason we only see basic training types of strength and agility tests? Shouldn’t we be seeing other types of tests as well for this particular recruitment? And are they getting eliminated as this goes along? Or are they here until Erskine picks someone? But to that point – they’re picking in just a week?!?As for the montage, we lose track a bit of what Col. Phillips is saying because we’re so focused on the images. Could they have done that better? We also have Sergeant Duffy yelling at Rogers, competing against Phillips. But Duffy’s a lot of fun and clearly the actor is having fun. The fact that he’s more concerned about the rifle in the mud than with Steve says a lot. But why doesn’t Hodge get reprimanded for knocking the beam out of the obstacle course? They get to the flagpole which turns into a Mulan flag moment. Is this a trope? Turns out, it’s a real military thing.Lots to discuss in today’s montage minute. Tune in!

  • CATFA 021: You Little Rascal!
Minute Twenty-One: From Breaking In Gilmore to Colonel Phillips’ MonologueJoining us on the episode is Father David Mowry, chaplain of the movies-by-minutes community! In the twenty-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...It’s Agent Peggy Carter! And who is that talking back to her? It’s Gilmore Hodge, of course. Even this small character was pulled from the comics, and we talk about him. And the actor’s name is Lex Shrapnel, which sounds like it’s from the comics. But back to Carter. It’s Hayley Atwell! We love her as this character. Apparently, there was a jiu jitsu joke at one point. We’re glad it’s not here. But we look at her comic background as well as a few other actors considered for the role. And we love that she does deliver a great punch to Gilmore. What were those clipboards they were filling out? Turns out those are last wills and testaments for the recruits. Yowza. That leads us to question to entire conceit that they’re recruiting essentially privates – newbies – instead of soldiers who have already proven themselves in the field of battle. Sure, there’s an element to the concept of finding the ‘weak link,’ but it does seem a bit strange. And did you know that Bucky was the camp mascot for Camp Lehigh? That’s where we first meet him in the comics, and also where he first discovers Steve’s secret that he’s Captain America. Ah, the good ol’ days of secret identities. We debate the start of the relationship between Steve and Peggy. She doesn’t even register him here. We wonder how strong their connection is. Is it only because he’s strong later? Does she have an attraction to him at this point? Or is she just looking at him as a great option for their recruitment?Tommy Lee Jones makes his entry in the film as Colonel Phillips and we look at his career as well as the character he plays here. We also chat about the SSR and the ranks. How are all of these people fitting into this hierarchy? There’s a General Patton quote we discuss, and we get to see how Col. Phillips reacts to the scrawny Steve. And we get a montage! Tune in!

Minute Twenty: From Dancing Blue Energy to Agent CarterJoining us for the last time this season, we have Will Johnson and Don Shanahan from the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast. In the twentieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...What’s with the screaming blue Tesseract energy? Are those sounds the throes of Norse passion from centuries ago?We talk about Hugo Weaving and what he brings to the role. There’s also greatness in Zola as he gets quite excited about the success of their experiment. Believe it or not, we also compare Zola and Erskine to characters in Akira Kurosawa’s Stray Dog.And then we’re in Camp Lehigh. Great shot setting up Steve and the rest of the recruits, plus we get to very briefly meet Agent Carter!Energy’s in the air and Queen Victoria’s getting the new recruits ready. Tune in!

Minute Nineteen: From Tesseract Glow to Tesseract ScreamsJoining us again, we have Will Johnson and Don Shanahan from the Cinephile Hissy Fit Podcast! In the nineteenth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...When Schmidt opens the drawer, we hear the sounds again. Is this proof that the Tesseract does in fact make these noises? It seems to be the case. And again, we have the Pulp Fiction similarities. But where did they get the specs to make the machinery so it fits the Tesseract so perfectly? To that end, we give mad props to the props department. They have to come up with quite the array of crazy tools and items not just for this scene but the entire film. And mad science kicks in here as they crank the Tesseract machine up to 11, flooding the room with crazy blue energy... screams? We debate if Joe Johnston should’ve stayed on to direct the remaining Captain America films or not.Quite a fun minute with Tesseract energy screams and directorial debates.
