Minute Forty-Eight: From Taking the Fight Overseas to Steve’s PromotionJoining us on the show today and the rest of the week, it’s Jessica Plummer, author of Sword, Stone and Table as well as the host of Flights and Tights: A Superman Movie Podcast. In the forty-eighth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Colonel Phillips has plans for the SSR that involve Peggy and Howard flying with him that night to London. But how much of this is SOP and how much is Phillips pushing his agenda with the program? And why send Steve to Alamagordo? Speaking of, we talk a bit about the history of Alamagordo. We also talk about Steve’s penchant for not following orders. He’s kind of the worst soldier. Maybe Phillips was right? But Senator Brandt has other plans for Steve and does his best politician pitch to Steve, selling him on plans to join the battle. Why is Steve so naive, especially if he’s from Brooklyn? But he bites and we end the minute with Steve getting ready to start his promotion. Will Steve like his promotion? • CATFA 047: Phillips Was Going to Rub Erskine Out Anyway
Minute Forty-Seven: From Sullen Steve to the President’s Re-Tasking of the SSRJoining us on the show today and the rest of the week, it’s Jessica Plummer, author of Sword, Stone and Table as well as the host of Flights and Tights: A Superman Movie Podcast. In the forty-seventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve and Peggy chat about Erskine, but the real question we have is how far along is Steve in getting used to this new body? Is he running into door frames? He and Peggy join the conversation that Col. Phillips is having with Senator Brandt while Howard works on the Hydra sub. Does it make sense for Hydra to really be this far advanced? And why wouldn’t Senator Brandt have heard of them before? It’s a bit of awkward exposition clearly designed just to fill the audience in but doesn’t completely make sense. And what’s Phillips planning with the SSR now that Erskine is out of the way? We have some debate about that. What are Colonel Phillips’ intentions now that Dr. Erskine is dead? • CATFA 046: Roeder Marks and Schneider Piles
Minute Forty-Six: From Berlin on the Map to Steve’s Blood DrawJoining us on the show today and the rest of the week, it’s Jessica Plummer, author of Sword, Stone and Table as well as the host of Flights and Tights: A Superman Movie Podcast. In the forty-sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We talk about Hutter’s, Schneider’s and Roeder’s expectations for this trip and what Schmidt planned from the start. We also talk about the Tesseract cannon that Schmidt uses on them and what it’s actually doing to them. Plus, we discuss what it leaves behind. From there, we move into a conversation about the Hydra salute and the Hydra comic origins. We debate if the outfits should’ve remained green and goofy like they are in the comics and draw a connection between their salute and Muppets Most Wanted. There’s some discussion about Dr. Zola’s reaction and where he stands with this whole Hydra thing. And we end the conversation returning to the SSR Base where Steve’s sullenly giving blood.Schmidt’s kicking Hydra into high gear and we’re here for it. • CATFA 045: His Own Playpen
Minute Forty-Five: From Schmidt Taking the Team Into His Lab to Schneider Telling Schmidt He’s MadJoining us on today’s episode, we have Colin Parker and James Anderson from the Timeline Scavengers podcast. In the forty-fifth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Schmidt’s decision point. Was he always intending on taking the three SS officers into the lab, or was it Schneider bringing up ‘Red Skull’ that pushed him to it? Realistically, was he in a place where killing these three makes sense? Wouldn’t Hitler be checking up on these three? It really ends up feeling like plot just for the audience so we can see what he’s up to, but knowing there are a few years from here to when we see these weapons in use, it’s either a terribly slow communication system between Berlin and the Hydra Lab, or Hitler is very lethargic about making decisions when it comes to Schmidt. We also get into talking about the crazy level of Schmidt and what defines crazy anyway.Lots of debate in this episode. Minute Forty-Four: From Steve Still Checking Himself Out to Schmidt Changing His TuneJoining us on today’s episode, we have Colin Parker and James Anderson from the Timeline Scavengers podcast. In the forty-fourth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...There’s a debate about the length of shot showing us Steve checking himself out. Why is it such a long shot? We have thoughts. We also jump back to the Austrian Alps so we can talk about A.I.M. surprisingly. We also get to talk about Kraftwerk, which is a big surprise. Why? Well, there’s a connection to our three SS Officers who come to talk to Schmidt. There’s chat about the Hydra officers, about Easter eggs, and about the turning point for Schmidt with these three officers. We’re starting to dig into the chat between Roedder, Hutter, Schneider, and Schmidt. • CATFA 043: Peer [13] Pressure
Minute Forty-Three: From Steve Taking the Plunge to Steve Noticing His New SizeJoining us on today’s episode, we have Colin Parker and James Anderson from the Timeline Scavengers podcast. In the forty-third minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...There was a line in the script that Steve didn’t know how to swim. Clearly, they dropped that because, well, it would’ve been nonsense to have him not only swim but swim really fast! Steve not only catches up to the Hydra submarine underwater, but also smashes the window with one punch, pulls Kruger out, then tosses him up onto the pier. We debate a bit about the toss – was Steve in the water? Already climbing up? Regardless, it feels cartoonish. We then move to a conversation about Hydra, their logo, and their motto. How well do they all tie together? There’s some history, but it all still feels a bit muddled. There’s also reference to The Baader-Meinhof Complex and we start talking a bit about Steve noticing his new self.Another fun minute and great conversation about it. James, Colin and Andy discuss movie references and distracted driving. We talk about Steve’s ability to run really fast and debate his ability to dodge bullets when he can’t see the gun. Minute Forty: From Peggy Taking Aim to Steve Taking a LeapJoining us on this episode, we have Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell from the Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! In the fortieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Agent Carter’s quite a shot, but Kruger’s got another trick up his sleeve as he blows up a car near her. That doesn’t stop her as she aims, shoots, and kills Kruger’s driver. We talk about Agent Carter through this scene and how madly skilled she is. We also talk about the Lucky Star Cab Company. Their logo seems awfully familiar. We talk a bit about the driver. He’s a busy character actor!Steve tackles Peggy. Is he just a dumb oaf or what? We chat a bit about stunt doubles and the amazing work these people do in films like this. Kudos! We also talk a bit about Steve’s bare feet... or are they? Turns out he’s wearing fake feet shoes. Cool yet creepy. We have a link below if you’d like to see them. The sets create a fantastic illusion of Brooklyn streets, but watching a minute at a time, we’re able to spot repeated elements and we talk through that a bit. It’s a minute of running down a convoluted maze of movie set streets with Steve and Heinz.
