Marvel Movie Minute • Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Minute Fifty-Eight: From Parachute to PrisonersJoining us, we have Michael Gravagno, host of the podcasts The Superhero Show Show and Movie of the Year.In the fifty-eight minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve and Peggy continue their adorable banter and he’s got a great line as he then jumps out of the plane, parachuting down to the forests of Austria. But how does he know where to go? Are his mapping skills that super? As for Peggy, would you go running to the open door of a plane, under fire or not? We didn’t think so. The real question is... are they now off to Switzerland for some fondue? We talk about the Hydra factory floor and ponder Zola’s role in all of this. How much is he buying into Hydra’s goals now? And how does he measure 60% more? We’re closing in on confrontation between Steve and Hydra. We get Mike’s thoughts on Tommy Lee. We also talk about the conversation between Peggy and Steve in the rain and the fact that it wasn’t scripted. Minute Fifty-Five: From Phillips Reminding Steve That He Can Spell to Phillips Reprimanding CarterJoining us on the show today, we have Travis Bow and Robin Burdge! In the fifty-fifth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Phillips remembers Bucky’s name but there’s a grammatical issue and we’re here for it. We talk about the relationship between Colonel Phillips and Steve Rogers, and wonder if there’s enough of Phillips to really call him a change character. Why is he being so ridiculously diminutive to Steve? But he does give Steve and idea. And Peggy’s face sure seems to say that the filmmakers’ intentions weren’t to have us read that Peggy came here just to get Steve moving. So confusing.Grammar talk and more. Was it strictly a plot requirement? Did we need more time between them? Regardless, we’re here for them. Steve rushes off to talk to Colonel Phillips and we get plenty to discuss about Tommy Lee Jones, and the coincidence that also puts him right here. It’s a minute of so many coincidences. Minute Fifty-Two: From Italian Crickets to a Circus MonkeyJoining us on the show today, we have Travis Bow and Robin Burdge! In the fifty-second minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve gets nothing but silence from the troops. Clearly, the USO team didn’t prepare him for a different audience. Like they should’ve done. and why is Brandt’s aide still the one managing Steve? Is he like the road manager now? We talk about the hecklers and butts in the MCU. And Steve finds a new use for the shield. We also dig into USO tour history and Tinkerbell. We’re going gritty. Minute Fifty-One: From A Punch in Chicago to A Quiet ResponseJoining us on the show today, we have Movies by Minutes regulars Travis Bow and Robin Burdge! In the fifty-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We talk about the Menken/Zippel song some more and discuss descants and the genius word-smithing of things like ‘napped in America’ to rhyme with ‘Captain America.’ Steve gets his own comic book and movie series, and we talk about those as well. The comics, in particular, give us a lot to discuss – the joy of kids reading them, the changes to the cover, the time it came out, the ad on the back. We do find Steve in the movie theatre watching himself in the movie. Does no one recognize him? And how great would it have been to have a callback to our Loud Jerk? But Steve’s so popular that he’s regularly signing autographs, including for one beautiful fan. Could she be Peter Quill’s grandmother? Why is that moment so emphasized? We love the grand finale to the show, and the transition to Italy is perfect. Plus, we have a deleted scene showing Bucky, Dum Dum, and Gabe fighting Nazis then getting caught by Hydra. We promise, you won’t be able to get ‘Star-Spangled Man’ out of your heads. Minute Fifty: From The Director Cutting to Punching Hitler in PhiladelphiaJoining us on the show today and the rest of the week, it’s Jessica Plummer, author of Sword, Stone and Table as well as the host of Flights and Tights: A Superman Movie Podcast. In the fiftieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...The montage continues and we’re loving every minute of it. Steve and the actors who look curiously like the Howling Commandos get reprimanded by the director for looking into the camera. We love this Easter Egg and others like it. Plus, it’s a fun way to paint a picture of how performers like Steve were used in this period. The musical numbers get bigger and we enjoy the Busby Berkeley aspect to it. Clearly Joe Johnston does as well. No issues with the rhymes or meter in Menken’s and Zippel’s song today either! There’s some talk about the origins of wipes like the bar and radial wipes we see in the montage. And we question the strange travel pattern Steve and the Tour seems to be taking. And let’s not forget the inclusion of ‘Adolph Hitler’ in the tour now! Someone to punch!Where else will Captain America punch Hitler? Minute Forty-Nine: From Steve Not Knowing If He Can Do This to The Star-Spangled Man With a PlanJoining us on the show today and the rest of the week, it’s Jessica Plummer, author of Sword, Stone and Table as well as the host of Flights and Tights: A Superman Movie Podcast. In the forty-ninth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...It turns out that Senator Brandt’s plan was to have Steve perform in the USO tour selling Series-E Defense Bonds. Brandt’s Aide gives Steve a bit of a pep talk – BING BANG BOOM. How does it work for us to have Steve used in this way? And how recursive is the story becoming as the character in the movie is becoming reflective not just of the character in the comic books but also of how Captain America was actually used during WWII to sell war bonds. Once things get going, we turn to our love for Alan Menken. We celebrate him and David Zippel, his collaborator on the Star-Spangled Man song, and the work they did with this song. But what about the rhyming patterns? And the meter? There might be a few complaints to lodge for those in the know.Regardless, it’s still a spectacular minute that celebrates musicals and the 40s USO Tours and we’re here for it.Should Chris Evans be in a musical?
