  • CATFA 078: Wearing the Shell
Minute Seventy-Eight: From Private Lorraine to Howard StarkJoining us today, we have Jason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’.In the seventy-eighth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Private Lorraine kisses Steve on behalf of all the wives in America but... it still feels written. The forced kiss. The lady scorned. The attempt at a comeback. Everything feels like the rom-com tropes they’re pulling from. It doesn’t work for us. But we do get to talk more about fondue.Howard clears things up for Steve, but really just tells him that his problem is that he’s thinking – the bane of every male. Again... very written. But we do get to talk about how his lab feels like the progenitor of Q’s labs in the Bond films. It’s a minute that feels very written, but allows for a lot of great conversation. • CATFA 077: Post-Explosion Crazy Hair
Minute Seventy-Seven: From Post-Explosion Reaction to Pre-Kiss ReactionJoining us today, we have Jason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’.In the seventy-seventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Ah, mad scientists and the mussed hair paired with the ashy face trope. We talk about Stark’s test with the Tesseract energy and what happens to him and his assistant. But really, this minute largely deals with Steve as he figures out how to handle Private Lorraine. Natalie Dormer makes her mark on the MCU with this moment of heavy flirtation with Steve, and he just seems struck dumb. Is this puny Steve’s mental return? Is this how he acted with any beautiful woman when on the USO tour? It’s odd and feels written. Clearly, it’s just here to create rom-com drama between Peggy and Steve, but to what end?We have a lot of questions about this minute. • CATFA 076: A Totally Different Steve
Minute Seventy-Six: From Setting Up an Appointment to Blowing Himself UpJoining us today, we have Jason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’.In the seventy-sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Ah, the red dress. Hayley Atwell looks stunning in it and clearly, Bucky and Steve react the way Peggy wanted them to. We chat about both of their reactions here and why it works well. We also discuss Bucky’s expectations with women – particularly when Steve’s around – and how he’s dealing with shifts in their dynamics. We also talk about Howard Stark testing the Tesseract peas. How does this work? We struggle with the science behind this a bit. Why does he throw shade at Steve? And why does the Tesseract pellet react to the wire but not to the robotic arms holding it? Ah... Marvel science.... Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • CATFA 075: The Two Steves
Minute Seventy-Five: From The Two Steves to Lady in RedJoining us today, we have Jonathan and Tabitha Carlisle!
In the seventy-fifth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Chris Evans gets to share the screen with Leander Deeny, and we’re 110% here for it. We love that they gave them the opportunity to share the screen together in some capacity other than through the CG body combination.
We talk a bit about pub songs and debate what makes a pub song a pub song. We also talk about Steve and his conversation with Bucky. How much of their old friendship do we read through this small chat?
We also talk about Peggy and that red dress. Tune in!

  • CATFA 074: You Can Call Me Colonel America.
Minute Seventy-Four: From Setting the Fire to Opening a TabJoining us today, we have Jonathan and Tabitha Carlisle!
In the seventy-four minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve and Colonel Phillips chat about attacking the weapons factories, which leads us to go down some interesting conversational roads relating to Red Skull. We also talk about hierarchy and the written feel this script has throughout this week.
Then we transition to the Whip & Fiddle Pub where we meet Steve’s tentative team. They seem interested enough, but why are Dernier and Jones so dark? Is there more to their story?
Will Steve open a tab for them? Tune in!

Minute Seventy-Three: From The End of the Movie? to Attack StrategizingJoining us today, we have Jonathan and Tabitha Carlisle!
In the seventy-third minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Senator Brandt tries to give a medal of valour to Captain America, but Cap’s a no-show. We do get the Stan Lee cameo instead, but where does this take place? Why does it look so fake? And what’s up with the terrible stand-ins they have play Stan and his friend in the wide shot? We talk about barrage balloons and the Daily Mail, not to mention Steve’s new-found photographic memory and his humble brag.
Plus, we have an extended scene to discuss. Tune in!

  • CATFA 072: The John Hughes Ending
Minute Seventy-Two: From a Bi-Directional Approach to A Rousing CheerJoining us today, we have Jonathan and Tabitha Carlisle!
In the seventy-two minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve turns himself in but Colonel Phillips says he’s fine. He then comments to Agent Carter about faith. Is this the end of Colonel Phillips’ turn? Is that why this moment feels so much like a John Hughes ending? It’s strange how final everything feels here – even the not-quite-but-close-to-kiss that Peggy and Steve don’t share. They sure want to!
And perhaps that’s why no one pays any attention to all the Hydra tech the troops are bringing in. Who knows? And what’s up with the strangeness coming from Bucky?
This minute certainly leaves us with a lot of questions. Tune in!

Minute Seventy-One: From Stepping Out to Arriving
Joining us today, we have Jonathan and Tabitha Carlisle!
In the seventy-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We talk about Steve’s triumphant return leading the missing soldiers from the 107th. But how did they grow to be such a big group? Were there more troops there we never saw? Or were they gathering POWs along the way? And why did they take so long to get back? It’s a mind twister. We also chat about the repeated shot of Steve at the head of the troops. Does that make sense?
And how about Gilmore? He’s finally stepping out of his tent, but what does that mean exactly? Tune in!

Minute Seventy: From KIA to Goings-OnJoining us on the show, we have Andrew and Joe Darowski returning from last season! In the seventieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We talk more about Col. Phillips’ letter to Senator Brandt. So Steve is, in fact, a captain now? And why does he talk about the 3rd of November in such a strange way? Peggy enters – through the small door instead of the open side of the tent – just in time to hear Phillips’ assertion that Rogers was killed in action. We talk about the two actors, this conversation, struggles we have with it, as well as some positives as well, including Johnston’s smarts in staging a conversation like this cinematically. We wrap the week up with this conversation. Minute Sixty-Nine: From Bucky Balancing to Phillips DictatingJoining us on the show, we have Andrew and Joe Darowski returning from last season! In the sixty-ninth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve and Bucky work their way across this gantry. Why this way out? And who cleaned Bucky up? How about that continuity error with the bent railing? And why end the scene this way in a dissolve out on Steve leaping through a fireball? It’s peculiar and we certainly have our questions...We also get to talk about Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Phillips and his voice. It’s great for reading condolence letters. And how about that middle name of Steve’s?The action sequence comes to an end. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries
