  • CATFA 068: Oh Yeah... I Forgot You Were Here.
Minute Sixty-Eight: From Running Up the Stairs to Walking Across the GantryJoining us on the show, we have Andrew and Joe Darowski returning from last season! In the sixty-eighth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...This is a minute all about escape. Red Skull and Dr. Zola take the elevator up to the Triebflügeljäger, but why don’t they just both take the car? And would Red Skull have left Zola behind if he didn’t want his car? We talk a bit about Nazi engineering and their actual development on a flying vehicle like this, as well as the ridiculous size of Schmidt’s coupe.Meanwhile, Steve and Bucky run up toward the gantry. How high are they really? It seems wicked high. And why do they go up instead of down and out? It’s an odd choice. We have a lot to debate in this minute. Minute Sixty-Seven: From Flipping the Switch to Spotting a Way OutJoining us on the show, we have Andrew and Joe Darowski returning from last season! In the sixty-seventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...It’s the Scooby Doo minute! That’s right, Johann Schmidt pulls his human Hugo Weaving mask off revealing the Red Skull reality underneath. We are so here to talk about all of this mask-wearing, latex-ripping, fire-incinerating, and villain monologuing in this minute.Get your own latex mask on and tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • CATFA 066: Shape Inside of Shape Inside of Shape
Minute Sixty-Six: From Zero on the Clock to Schmidt on His BackJoining us on the show, we have Andrew and Joe Darowski returning from last season! In the sixty-sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...The timers go off and the factory erupts in explosions. We still wonder why Schmidt needs so many switches. Where’s the logic? And why no blue tesseract energy in the explosions? There’s a fantastic shot in this minute involving concentric ovals and another involving concentric squares. Some stunning production design, direction, and camera placement going on that really wowed all of us.Wouldn’t it have been nice to have a moment betwen Dr. Zola and Bucky? There clearly has been some recent history there worth at least a look. We chat about the punch, Schmidt’s face, and Cap’s choices of weapons here and in the future. It’s the first confrontation between our hero and villain. • CATFA 065: Let’s Start Our Banter Again
Minute Sixty-Five: From Finding Bucky to Two Seconds LeftJoining us, we have Matthew Fox, the voice behind The Ethical Panda and our host from last season! In the sixty-fifth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Cap finds Bucky! And as it turns out, the schematic on Dr. Zola’s desk showing presumably the experiments he was doing on Bucky was to turn him into the version of Dr. Zola that we get in the comics. How intriguing... When Cap saves Bucky, he does say, “I thought you were dead.” So was he, in fact, looking for other POWs? Apparently, it doesn’t matter because those countdown clocks keep ticking down and Steve has to get Bucky out of there. Which they work to do while bantering the whole time. We discuss the nature of the Steve/Bucky banter and how it fits in their relationship, the military, and the MCU. We also talk about the countdown clocks – is a second actually a second on those or are they running fast? We touch on the Howling Commandos saving the troops out front of the compound and chat about some of Matthew’s favorite moments with Cap. Lots to discuss, and the perfect cliffhanger. • CATFA 064: Set It to ‘Chickens’
Minute Sixty-Four: From Zola Running to the Experiment Rom to Steve Entering the Experiment RoomJoining us, we have Matthew Fox, the voice behind The Ethical Panda and our host from last season! In the sixty-fourth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We talk more about Schmidt and Zola. Schmidt has to spend an inordinate amount of time flipping switches for his self-destruct system. Zola, meanwhile, runs away. Very different how these two act. Steve continues his hunt through the factory, stopping to look down the length of the place. But why that hold on the balcony? Are we meant to see something there? We talk a bit about Zola’s experiment room and the schematics we see. We won’t quite figure out what we’re looking at right away, but we do get there! We also talk about the map and the locations for Hydra bases. And there’s a fantastic nod to film noir in the hallway stare-off between Dr. Zola and Steve outside his experiment room. But why doesn’t Steve try to catch Zola? The time’s ticking down. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • CATFA 063: Science and Alarms
Minute Sixty-Three: From Morita’s Retort to Zola’s RecognitionJoining us, we have Matthew Fox, the voice behind The Ethical Panda and our host from last season! In the sixty-third minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We talk a bit about Schmidt’s plans and Zola’s seeming change between here and in The Winter Soldier. Is there much logic to any of it? And why don’t they care more that they have to destroy this whole factory? Could they have figured out a plan that didn’t require them to blow it all up? How much has Hydra succeeded the way Marvel’s used them in their films and shows? There’s certainly plenty of talk about Red Skull and his motivations in this minute, including why all the self-destruct timers are set at seven minutes. Why is it that Dum Dum Dugan seems to be the one given all the personality so far of the Howling Commandos? We do talk a bit about Gabe Jones, his role here, and his comic background. We try to figure why Schmidt seeing Captain America triggers him to hit all the self-destruct buttons. What is it about seeing this person fighting tells him it’s a super soldier? Did the USO market him as a super soldier?Lots of things that bother us in this minute. Lots to think about for sure. • CATFA 062: The Comically Villain-est
Minute Sixty-Two: From Morita’s Comeback to Schmidt’s AlarmJoining us, we have Matthew Fox, the voice behind The Ethical Panda and our host from last season! In the sixty-second minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Jim Morita clears thing up nicely with Dum Dum Dugan and it feels good and necessary. It’s also a reminder for us that Marvel isn’t suddenly just ‘woke’ – they’ve been confronting racism and other political topics from the beginning. We talk a bit about Morita’s history in the comics as well as Kenneth Choi’s IMDb breakdown. We also do the same with Bruno Ricci. How big is the 107th? We gauge the potential size of the group and why Dum Dum and Morita might not have met before. Steve wants to find Bucky, but again – why does he want to do everything alone? Regardless, the lighting is gorgeous as he runs off. We follow the Howling Commandos and the rest of the escaped POWs out into the compound where they take on the Hydra Troops. But why do some still use regular weapons? We continue through the factory. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

Minute Sixty-One: From Steve’s Stealth to Dum Dum’s RacismJoining us, we have Matthew Fox, the voice behind The Ethical Panda and our host from last season! In the sixty-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Cap’s sneaking around in the Hydra factory. We talk about his nature, the peripheral vision of Hydra troops, picking up blue glowing things, and more. We love his outfit look here though. There’s chat about Mary Sues and the necessity (or not) of training montages. But why does Steve think he can handle everything by himself? And why does Hydra have so few guards stationed outside the cells? But how nice is that moment when Steve arrives at the cells? It’s a well-constructed shot. And we talk about more Howling Commandos – Gabe Jones and Falsworth, in particular. But have these troops not seen Cap’s comic books? Lots of sneaking and meeting prisoners. Minute Sixty: From Outside the Hydra Compound to Inside the Hydra CompoundJoining us, we have Michael Gravagno, host of the podcasts The Superhero Show Show and Movie of the Year.In the sixtieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve knocks out a mouthy guard with his shield and we have some conversation about shield dynamics. Is it superpowered too? And why do none of the guards walking around the Hydra compound see him? Is that a superpower too? Or perhaps their masks actually don’t allow peripheral vision? Regardless, it gives us plenty of fodder for our conversation. We also talk about tanks, the compound itself, and how Steve manages to get inside. It’s a sneaky minute. We chat about the character and Neal McDonough who plays him. And there’s talk about the Hydra mask design. Some mouths exposed, some not. Why? And do they recognize each other based on mouths? Meanwhile, Steve sneaks into the compound in the back of a truck and we’re here for it.We’re definitely getting Raiders vibes in this minute.
