  • CATFA 088: The Potatoes Were Fine
Minute Eighty-Eight: From Phillips’ Brilliant Theory to the Hand Zola’s Been DealtJoining us on the show, we have Lorraine Dahm.
In the eighty-eighth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Wait! Zola wants to live?!? Well, that’s Colonel Phillips’ theory. We chat about the logic of it and find it holds up pretty well. We like the seriousness of the interrogation. What does Phillips really want here? And what is Zola hoping will happen? We also talk about some great interrogation scenes in film.
We also debate if Zola saw Bucky fall or not. Tune in!

  • CATFA 087: A Room Full of Joneses
Minute Eighty-Seven: From Blood on the Floor to Steak on the TableJoining us on the show, we have Lorraine Dahm.In the eighty-seventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Ah, interrogation room tropes. There are a few here, and how fun they are. We chat about those, as well as the nonsensically loud door. Why does it sound legitimately like a prison door? We also talk about food shortages during the war, vegetarianism, Zola in the film, and more. Why did Zola let himself get captured? Or was that not his plan? And why does he seem so different in this film than later ones?
Lots to think about as the interrogation gets under way. Tune in!

  • CATFA 086: Rest In Peace, Bucky
Minute Eighty-Six: From The Cliffhanger to The TableJoining us on the show, we have Lorraine Dahm.
In the eighty-sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...It’s a big minute on today’s show as we have the death of Steve’s best friend, James Buchanan ‘Bucky’ Barnes. Well, at least it’s meant to feel that way, right? We talk a bit about the big moment and how it works as far as getting an audience to care. Does it work better if you already knew about the Winter Soldier from the comics? Or does it play fine either way?
We also wrestle with the fact that someone obviously finds Bucky fairly quickly. And why wasn’t it the Allies? Wouldn’t they have gone back to retrieve the body? It’s a bit strange.
We get to spend some time in the setup for Dr. Zola’s interrogation as well as he gets the lay of the land and Joe Johnston gives us a respite from the action.
It’s a great conversation about friendships, dead characters, and cyanide capsule retrieval. Tune in!

  • CATFA 085: This Is a Person Who Does Want to Get Out of Hydra
Minute Eighty-Five: From Defense & Attack to A Literal CliffhangerJoining us today, we have Will Freeland from the Hype Is My Superpower podcast. In the eighty-fifth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve battles the Hydra trooper with arm cannons, which never seem to do the same type of damage. It’s very confusing. Steve’s able to use them on the door between train cars, for example, and it seems to disintegrate the doors instead of just dinging them, which is what they’d been doing up to this point. Very strange. Regardless, Steve and Bucky team up again to take down the rest of the Hydra troopers. Unfortunately for them, the Hydra trooper with the cannons wasn’t down. He’s back and blasts them. Why does Steve take the hit so strongly this time? Clearly for plot reasons as it gives Bucky a chance to pick up the shield then take the hit which drops him out the side of the train. So clearly, he’d read ahead in the Marvel canon to know the plans. We’re still trying to sort all this out. • CATFA 084: The ‘Lock ‘Em in Separate Rooms’ Trick
Minute Eighty-Four: From Sneaking Along the Top of the Train to Dodging Enemy FireJoining us today, we have Will Freeland from the Hype Is My Superpower podcast. In the eighty-fourth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Ah, train logistics. We try to figure out what’s going on on the top of the train. Either there were edits made or the effects team has them accidentally switching from one train top to another. It’s a bit confusing. Then again, we’re watching this a minute at a time and paying way too close attention to the minutiae. Why do they choose to enter the train car they do? Why not go straight to the engine? And how do they know Zola’s there? And why are there so few troops on the train? And was there intention to make this feel like a Snowpiercer homage?Back to the three guys who land on the train. There’s a trope of the guy joining the heroes to be either a spy or a red shirt. Is that a fair way to include Gabe? Was he waiting for a flood of troops to pour out? And how about the ‘lock ‘em in separate rooms’ trick? Which speaks to the fact that this was all a setup. Fun in the train! • CATFA 083: Super Constitution or Super Throw Up?
Minute Eighty-Three: From Mountain Top to Train TopJoining us today, we have Will Freeland from the Hype Is My Superpower podcast. In the eighty-third minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve and Bucky are back to their old bantering ways. We chat a bit about their relationship and their comic history together. We chat a bit about the train and how it’s scripted vs. how it plays in the finished film – does it make it different if we know they’re after Zola? But why don’t they just kill him? Does it speak to ulterior motives from the SSR? There’s certainly some sense of the darker evolution of the organization. Who figured out physics involving ziplining down this line? We also have some complaints about the editing around Steve’s line and Dum Dum’s response. Plus, the anachronistic line from Falsworth. Plus, why do just three guys head down to the train? Why not the entire team? Do the rest head down for hot cocoa? There’s some talk about the train itself as well as the battle damage on Cap’s shield. • CATFA 082: Breaking the Fourth Wall
Minute Eighty-Two: From Über Tank Destruction to Intercepted Hydra Radio TransmissionsJoining us today, we have Will Freeland from the Hype Is My Superpower podcast. In the eighty-second minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...More montage! Plus, is that the Wilhelm Scream? We also chat about speed ramping and how they use it here. It doesn’t make a lot of sense as to how it’s used. Why is the bag toss emphasized with it? Seems like it’s meant to be the finale of a big action scene. There’s also some rough effects work as Cap jumps off the Über tank. Why is it in here? Just to show us how big it is? We get a strange fourth wall break from Red Skull, which as it turns out is him screaming at Dr. Zola. Why break the fourth wall here? There’s a bit of extra dialogue between the two in the script to chat about too. We also touch on the relationship between Skull and Zola. We try to figure out Zola’s job. Is it just designing weapons? Sure doesn’t seem that way. We also get to watch the only moment Manager Veldt has in the film, as it ends quickly with Schmidt’s Hydra Pistol. We head to the Alps with the Howling Commandos. Wait, it’s February and no one’s wearing gloves? Hrm. We also get to chat a bit about the radio Morita and Jones are working on.It’s a busy minute all over Europe. • CATFA 081: His True North
Minute Eighty-One: From Explosions to Latch BreakageJoining us today, we have Will Freeland from the Hype Is My Superpower podcast. In the eighty-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...There’s plenty of debate about how exactly Steve puts his shield on his arm. It doesn’t make a lot of sense. But that leads us into a conversation about montages and the Howling Commandos. Dum Dum’s shoulders are so high, and Gabe Jones is so fast! Steve’s using a gun which feels real for the time, and ties into Brubaker’s run in the comics. We also touch on the Invaders. The montage shifts to a scene with Dernier planting a bomb on the underside of a mini tank. So each of them are getting their moments we figure, and it’s fine. But then again, they don’t all get their moment? It’s odd.We also talk about the random news footage Colonel Phillips and Agent Carter are watching. What’s the context? Is this just for the military? News reel footage? Is this specifically something Senator Brandt’s commissioned to film to show the American public more of Captain America? It’s... odd. Not to mention that shot of the compass... And that leads us to chat a bit about the fatherly way Colonel Phillips seems to be treating Peggy here.Plus, there’s sniper montage bits and some moments purely designed for 3D. Plus, Cap shows he knows how to use that shield ridiculously well. Tune in!Join the conversation with movie lovers from around the world on The Next Reel’s Discord channel!Film Sundries

  • CATFA 080: I Smell Hydra
Minute Eighty: From Surprise at Peggy to Surprise in the TreetopsJoining us today, we have Jason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’.In the eightieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We close our chat about Peggy after shooting at Steve to ‘test’ his shield and how Steve and Howard exchange notes on his uniform. It’s interesting compositionally how Johnston shot it and we enjoy it. We also talk about the final reveal of Captain America in his official uniform as we kick off the montage. Why did they decide to reveal him after already having fought? We do see bullet scorch marks on the shield, after all. And why is it that Captain America gets a uniform but every other superhero has outfits or suits?
We talk about his teaming up with the Howling Commandos and why we like them being part of his team in this particular story and the sense of them representing the American melting pot. And we chat about the nature of war comics.
But where do they attack? And how much time is passing? It’s a great montage to start talking about. Tune in!

Minute Seventy-Nine: From Carbon Polymer to Shield TestJoining us today, we have Jason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero’.In the seventy-ninth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We’re still in Q’s – I mean Howard’s – lab. Why is no one exploring the Tesseract-powered weapons we saw them bringing back? We discuss carbon polymers and if it’s the foundation of Steve’s uniform. And, of course, we get Cap’s shield. After a few other ridiculous designs first, of course. That sends us on a chat about vibranium and the nonsense concept it is. We also talk about the symbology of the shield.Peggy decides to test the shield with some bullets. How do we take that? And does it work? It’s a fun minute to chat about some serious comic lore.
