Marvel Movie Minute • Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Minute 98: From Flamethrower Fireball to The HangarJoining us, we have Nate “Bubbawheat” Withrow from the superhero movie blog Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights and the time loop podcast It's Time to Rewind!
In the ninety-eighth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Peggy helps Steve defeat the flame trooper. Well, she blows him up. Was she chasing this guy down or did she realize she was helping Steve? They have a cute near-kiss moment before she sends him scampering away to get ol’ RS. It’s cute. We like this bit. We can’t help but feel the romance in the air.
But Red Skull’s getting the Valkyrie started, and so we chase after him, watch some of his pilots get gunned down, then see him start it rolling down the runway. Steve sees it too. All of this gives us a chance to talk more about the Valkyrie, its schematics, the travel plans, and more.
We’re whittling away characters as we build to the conclusion. Tune in!

Minute 97: From Invasion to Peggy Taking AimJoining us, we have Nate “Bubbawheat” Withrow from the superhero movie blog Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights and the time loop podcast It's Time to Rewind!
In the ninety-seventh minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...We have a ton of problems that center on this Hydra base. Why is it lush and green at the base but winter at the top? Why is it constructed like everyone’s on the same level? Why does Red Skull run for the front door knowing they’re under attack? Why is there a strange heroic build to all the vehicles blowing up? Why is Peggy underdressed? Why does Hydra bother with flame troopers?
Clearly, we have issues, but they’re fun to talk about! Tune in!

Minute 96: From Doing This All Day to Howling BlastsJoining us, we have Nate “Bubbawheat” Withrow from the superhero movie blog Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights and the time loop podcast It's Time to Rewind!
In the ninety-sixth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve’s just here as a decoy. Why go to all the trouble and not just invade though? We talk a lot about the plans, but spend more time talking about the possible elevation of Hydra’s base, Schmidt’s office lab, and the runway in the mountain. Lots of questions, like why does it seem like it’s spring at the base of the mountain but deep winter at the tops? We also talk about the elevators that must be inside the base so people can easily get up and down. But they’ve gotta be ridiculously long rides. There’s also thought about why the Howling Commandos only send three on the ziplines, and then we try figuring out where Jones and Morita went and how Dernier ended up with Dum Dum and Falsworth.
Clearly, there are lots of questions, but that allows for so much fun debate. Tune in!

Minute 95: From Steve Brought Before Red Skull to Steve Brought to His KneesJoining us, it’s Jay Shepard the mad genius behind MCULocationScout.com, not to mention a variety of great podcasts.
In the ninety-fifth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve and Red Skull stand face to face and talk through this minute. It’s an interesting conversation about the nature of their powers and views.
Plus, Steve gets to feel a punch for likely the first time in a long time. And Hugo Weaving really delivers here.
Great confrontation between the hero and villain. Tune in!

In the ninety-fourth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve jumps over the wall to the Hydra compound on his motorcycle and takes on the troops. We talk about quick shots of guys falling without getting hit, about the knock on the door, about Steve’s shield toss, Schmidt’s assumptions, and more.
It’s an action-packed minute. Tune in!

Minute 93: From Cycle Chase to Tank ExplosionJoining us, it’s Jay Shepard the mad genius behind MCULocationScout.com, not to mention a variety of great podcasts.
In the ninety-third minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve’s on his motorcycle and so are six hydra troopers! The chase is on, but is it Spielbergian? Lucasian? Or just Johnstonian? What’s up with all of the Bond-like gadgets? Does this all make sense for Steve?
It’s a short bike chase but gives us plenty to talk about. Tune in!

Minute 92: From Steve’s Commitment to Steve’s MotorcycleJoining us, it’s Jay Shepard the mad genius behind MCULocationScout.com, not to mention a variety of great podcasts.
In the ninety-second minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve and Peggy head in to the meeting headed by Colonel Phillips to discuss plans for stopping Schmidt. There are a lot of elements we like in this scene. It plays well and has some great camera movement. We also like how Steve remains so quiet until the right moment. It works well.
And it transitions us to him getting ready and riding his motorcycle. We talk a bit about the TV movies and compare how he stashes his shield on the front of his bike in those to how he does it here.
And it’s the start of Steve’s last day being conscious in the 1940s. Tune in!

Minute 91: From Steve’s Struggles to Steve’s ResolveJoining us, it’s Jay Shepard the mad genius behind MCULocationScout.com, not to mention a variety of great podcasts.
In the ninety-first minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Steve can’t get drunk, which leads us on a conversation comparing the ‘poor me, I can’t get drunk’ angle with the ‘my friend just died and it’s all my fault’ angle. There’s plenty to discuss there. We talk about Peggy’s return into Steve’s life and the noirish look of the scene. We also talk about the nature of self-blame, and return to a conversation about the real location for the Whip & Fiddle.
Lots to dig into today. Tune in!

Minute NInety: From The Hydra Metaphor to Steve Trying to Drown His SorrowsJoining us on the show, we have Lorraine Dahm.
In the ninetieth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...Schmidt and his Hydra metaphors. They’re pretty nice even if they are a bit broad. The pilots, however, look like they’re in gimp leathers. We get a great reveal of the entire Hydra platoon and it’s frightening, particularly when they salute. Red Skull has a great smacking of his lips, and then we’re back in London in the bombed-out ruins of the Whip & Fiddle. We talk about the mirroring of Skull and his toast with Steve and his drinking. We also chat about Steve and Peggy.
Plus, there’s Steve’s metabolism to debate about. Tune in!

Minute Eighty-Nine: From Schmidt’s Beliefs to Schmidt’s SpeechJoining us on the show, we have Lorraine Dahm.
In the eighty-ninth minute of Joe Johnston’s 2011 film Captain America: The First Avenger...The interrogation continues, and Phillips lays out his plans to Zola. Phillips doesn’t seem to take much stock in Zola’s descriptions of Schmidt. Should he be more concerned? It’s really that sense of a mindset where you just can’t imagine that type of crazy actually fulfilling their plans. What’s great about this minute is the way Toby Jones plays it, really convincing Phillips that Schmidt can do what he says he can do and he should be concerned.
We then get to see the Valkyrie finally and have a chat about it. Do we really buy it’s as big as they say though? Five hundred forty feet wingspan? We talk about its origins and compare it to other planes. We also talk about the fact that Red Skull has a table set up with a red wine bottle, a glass of white, and no other glasses for anyone else. Kind of an odd toast?
We’re finally seeing the Valkyrie which must mean we’re close to the end. Tune in!
