I share an equation that breaks down elements of stress. I learned about this equation during a workshop that I completed with Gina M. Biegel in her Stressed Teens workshop, Mindfulness-Based Treatment Approaches, Second Edition 2014 189-212. Gina credits this equation with Shinzen Young (2004). This equation is stress equals pain times blockers(S=PxB). This can be a helpful tool that can help focus on emotional, environmental, and social factors that contribute to current destructive environments.

I define “destructive” environments/hosts as situations or activities that intentionally disrupt peace and promote harm to communities or individuals based on gender, religion, race, culture, or economic status. Destructive environments get a lot of attention. The goal of harmful host/environments are to get attention or control. We may not have much control over destructive behaviors that feed into the media, educational environment, or political arenas. We do have control over how we respond. When something tragic and chaotic happens, the typical reaction may be to freeze because the mind is trying to capture what is happening.

We’re trying to scan our environment so that we can respond.

The calmer we are, the better we can respond with strategy and logic so that we can respond safely to the best of our ability to keep ourselves and our families safe. But even then, when there are erratic conditions, we’re stumbling and trying to make sense of it. As a result, the mental pain, the physical pain, and the emotional pain are something that may take a while to recover from. That recovery is so important to recognize what has gone on and an acceptance of the pain and the loss. Identifying behaviors or situations that prevent us from healing and improving the future is also essential.
