"Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water." - Zen proverb
This Zen proverb is a reminder that even after achieving enlightenment, we still need to perform mundane tasks and live our daily lives. The proverb is often interpreted to mean that enlightenment doesn't change the external circumstances of our lives, but it does change our internal experience of them.
Before enlightenment, we may have performed these tasks with a sense of boredom or resentment. After enlightenment, we perform them with a sense of presence and awareness, fully engaged in the task at hand.
The quote also emphasizes the importance of mindfulness in everyday life. We can find peace and contentment even in the simplest of tasks, such as chopping wood or carrying water, if we approach them with a clear and open mind.
Ultimately, this Zen proverb reminds us that enlightenment is not a distant goal to be achieved, but rather a continuous process of self-discovery and awakening in the midst of our ordinary lives.

"All things are woven together and the common bond is sacred, and scarcely one thing is foreign to another, for they have been arranged together in their places and together make the same ordered Universe. For there is one Universe out of all, one God through all things, one substance and one law, one common Reason of all intelligent creatures, and one Truth." - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
This quote by Marcus Aurelius highlights his belief in the concept of "logos," which is a Greek term that can be translated to mean "word," "reason," or "principle." In Stoic philosophy, the logos refers to the underlying principle or order that governs the universe, and is often associated with God or the divine. In this quote, Marcus Aurelius suggests that all things in the universe are interconnected and part of a greater whole, which is guided by the logos.
He believes that the natural world and all living beings are part of a single ordered system, and that there is a sacred bond between all things. Marcus Aurelius also emphasizes the idea that there is a single, universal reason that governs all intelligent creatures, which he sees as a manifestation of logos.
This universal reason is based on the idea that there is a common Truth that underlies all existence and that we can come to understand this Truth through our own reasoning and introspection. Overall, this quote reflects Marcus Aurelius' belief in the interconnectedness of all things and his commitment to living in harmony with the natural world and the principles that govern it.

"Peace is the result of retraining your mind to process life as it is, rather than as you think it should be." - Wayne Dyer
This quote by Wayne Dyer highlights the idea that inner peace is not something that can be achieved by changing external circumstances or situations, but rather by changing the way we perceive and process those circumstances. Often, our minds create expectations and judgments about how things should be, and when reality does not match those expectations, we can experience stress, anxiety, and other negative emotions.
However, if we can learn to train our minds to accept things as they are, without judgment or attachment, we can find a sense of peace that is not dependent on external factors. Inner peace, in this sense, comes from within us and is not something that can be found outside of ourselves. It is a state of being that we can cultivate through mindfulness, self-awareness, and a commitment to living in the present moment.

"The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name." - Lao Tzu, Tao Te Ching
This quote captures the essence of the Tao, which is often described as an indescribable force or principle that underlies all of existence. According to Taoist philosophy, the Tao cannot be fully understood or explained through language or concepts, as it transcends all human understanding. Instead, the Tao is experienced through a deep connection to the natural world and surrender to the flow of life. This quote reminds us that words and names can only point toward the Tao, but they can never fully capture its essence. To truly understand the Tao, we must go beyond language and concepts, and tap into our intuitive sense of being.

"Zen is not a particular state but the normal state: silent, peaceful, unagitated. In Zazen neither intention, analysis, specific effort nor imagination take place." - Taisen Deshimar
This quote speaks to the essence of Zen practice, which emphasizes the cultivation of a calm and clear mind.
Through the practice of zazen, or seated meditation, one can access a state of inner stillness and peace that is innate to our true nature.
Rather than trying to achieve a specific outcome or goal, Zen encourages us to simply be present with whatever arises in the moment, without judgment or attachment. By embracing this state of non-doing and non-striving, we can access a deeper sense of connection to ourselves, others, and the world around us.

Dear Meditator,
One of the things that I really love about Stoicism is that it is practiced in "real life." Stoic philosophers were never secluded but, on the contrary, active citizens. I have always struggled with the notion of going somewhere alone in a retreat or in a cave in the mountain to seek "the truth." I have always found that the "me, alone to focus" is often too Ego driven. It is contrarian to Nature. We, humans, are meant to live in packs, in tribes, in communities. Yes, sometimes it is good to get out of the craziness of big cities, but most importantly, it is essential to find peace and serenity within ourselves, no matter where we are. It is too easy to be peaceful and calm alone in a cabin on top of the mountains in the middle of nowhere. But can you find the same peace in your car stuck in traffic? Can you find the same peace during your kid's loud birthday party? Can you find the same peace while facing adversity?
Epictetus says in his Discourses:
You see? You can be in control of your serenity, your calm, and your inner peace. Because it depends on your actions, on your decisions, not on your environment.
Yesterday in my private coaching practice, one of my students told me: I skipped meditation this week because we had visitors and it was too loud. My answer was to go the other way - precisely because your peace is disrupted, you must practice serenity. If you always need to avoid chaos to be content, you will never be successful. Think of a superhero; what would he be if he was super strong, heroic, and virtuous, but ONLY when things are easy. Remember that courage is not the absence of fear, but virtuous action DESPITE fear or IN THE FACE of adversity.
