I Go Among Trees
by Wendell Berry
I go among trees and sit still.
All my stirring becomes quiet
around me like circles on water.
My tasks lie in their places
where I left them, asleep like cattle.
Then what is afraid of me comes
and lives a while in my sight.
What it fears in me leaves me,
and the fear of me leaves it.
It sings, and I hear its song.
Then what I am afraid of comes.
I live for a while in its sight.
What I fear in it leaves it,
and the fear of it leaves me.
It sings, and I hear its song.
After days of labor,
mute in my consternations,
I hear my song at last,
and I sing it. As we sing,
the day turns, the trees move.

I go among trees and sit still…
Really? I have to sit still? But there are so many fun things to DO!!!
When the energy of spring is rising, it’s tempting to rush into all those projects we’ve been sitting on during the winter. To throw all our energy at them, in the hope of quick results. But then here comes Imbolc, the Celtic festival marking the beginning of Spring. Celebrated on or around February 1st, the word Imbolc is thought to come from Gaelic meaning in the belly and is a timely reminder that creativity begins ‘in the belly’ and needs a while to cook before it sees the light of day. Jumping in too soon can be like dragging a seedling out of the ground to see if it has grown roots yet!
In Wendell Berry's beautiful poem, despite his taking time to rest, the day, in its own time, turns. The trees, in their own time, move. Even bees rest, you know?
