    2. 有声音 /ð/(声を出す)→ this, that, mother

     think, thank, Thursday, thin, theory

     math, teeth, month, truth, bath

    think – thin – Thursday – math – teeth – bath

     this, that, these, those, though

     breathe, bathe, clothe,

    this – that – those – breathe – bathe

    • Think before you speak.

    • Thanks for the thoughtful gift.

    • The math test was tough.

    • This is the best day ever.

    • That’s what they said.

    • My mother gave me this.

    1. fan – hand
    2. fat – hat
    3. feel – heal
    4. fine – high
    5. fail – hail

A: Did you go to the farmers' market this morning?

B: Yeah! It was full of fresh fruit and fun food trucks.I got figs, fresh strawberries, and my favorite—fried tofu.

A: Fried tofu? That’s your favorite?

B: Ooh, Vivian’s hard to shop for!She already has everything.

A: I know! But I saw this velvet notebook and a vintage vase.Very elegant. Very her.

A: You’re right. I’ll go with the velvet one!

    1. 語頭(Word-initial):「red」「run」「right」など
    3. 語尾(Final):「car」「door」「more」など

    Repeat after me:

    • red(赤)
    • rain(雨)
    • really(本当に)
    • right(右)

    • around
    • carry
    • sorry
    • very

    • car
    • door
    • more
    • better

    *************

Hi everyone, and welcome back to All English Friday —

It’s an episode that we explore language, culture, and real-life topics, all in English.

Today’s topic is something I personally experienced and felt a little lost about at first.

Let’s talk about healthcare culture — and more specifically,

Why do Japanese people often go to the doctor even for a cold, while Americans usually don’t?

As always, we’ll start with the intermediate version,

and then move on to the advanced version in the second half of the episode.

    Let’s get started.

    🍀 Intermediate Version

When I first moved to the United States, I got sick.

It was just a cold, but I felt very nervous. I didn’t know what to do.

In Japan, I would just go to a clinic, talk to the doctor, and get some medicine.

    It’s easy and quick.

But in the U.S., people said to me,

“You don’t need to go to the doctor. Just rest and drink water.”

That surprised me. I thought, “But I feel sick. Isn’t that the time to go?”

It was my first time feeling sick in a country with such a different system.

In Japan, most people go to the doctor early, even when they don’t feel very bad.

The clinics are easy to find, and visits aren’t very expensive.

Japan has universal health insurance, so almost everyone is covered.

In the United States, many people wait before seeing a doctor.

Even if they have insurance, it can still be expensive.

Also, the system is difficult to understand.

People are not always sure if their visit will be covered.

So, many Americans use over-the-counter medicine.

This phrase means that you can buy medicine without a doctor’s note.

For example, you can get cold medicine, painkillers, or allergy pills directly from a pharmacy.

But for stronger medicine, you need a prescription —

a piece of paper from a doctor that allows you to get special medication.

In Japan, people usually go to the doctor first to get that prescription.

In the U.S., many people try to feel better with over-the-counter drugs before visiting a doctor.

After living in the U.S. for a while, I’ve gotten used to this system.

The doctors and nurses I’ve met here are kind and professional, but I still miss the ease of healthcare in Japan.

  • #133 “I have a cold”

I’m coming down with something.”

A: “You okay? You look tired.”

    B: “Yeah… I think I’m coming down with something.”

    A:大丈夫?

“coming down with” のあとには “a cold” や “the flu” がよくつきます。

例:I think I’m coming down with the flu.

I’m feeling under the weather.”

A: “Are you coming to the party tonight?”

B: “I might skip it. I’m feeling a bit under the weather.”

My back hurts.” / “My legs are sore.”

A: “Why are you standing like that?”

B: “Ugh… my back hurts. I think I slept wrong.”

A: “Are you okay? You’re walking funny.”

B: “Yeah, my legs are sore from the gym yesterday.”

    A:大丈夫?

    *************

    🍀 Intermediate Version

Let’s start with some surprising stories.

In America, there are people in their twenties who are already millionaires. Some of them made money from apps or tech startups. Others became famous on YouTube or TikTok, or invested early in things like crypto. These young people buy houses, travel the world, or even start companies—sometimes before the age of 25.

In the U.S., people are usually paid based on their job or skills—not based on age. That’s why it’s not unusual for someone in their twenties to earn more than their parents. Some young professionals in big cities who work in finance or tech make six figures early in their careers.

But that’s only one side of the story.

Many other young people are struggling. Some can’t find jobs that pay well. Others work full-time, but still can’t afford to move out. One big reason is student debt. The average student loan in the U.S. is around $37,000, which is over 5 million yen. Many graduates pay hundreds of dollars each month for ten years or more, just to repay their loans. That’s one of the reasons why more and more young people live with their parents after college. Some can’t pay rent, can’t save money, and feel like financial independence is out of reach.

That’s why people say young Americans today are “polarized.” Some are rich and free. Others are stressed and stuck. They’re the same generation, but their lives look completely different.

There’s no single story for this generation.

Some are building wealth in new, bold ways.

    Others are facing real challenges.

    But one thing is clear:

This is a very creative generation.

They’re rewriting the rules, using the internet to build, connect, and express themselves like never before.

It’s not easy—but it’s exciting. And the world is already feeling their impact.
