Make More Love Not War

Men Always Want Sex....Right!? | Sarah Hunter Murray, Ph.D.

Listen Later

Benjamin Franklin famously stated, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.” That was true in 1789 when he wrote it and it’s still true today. There may be another absolute certainty that even the horn dog himself Uncle Benny would agree with and that’s that men are always in the mood for sex. We all know that Mr. Franklin was at least a little Randy…..no no no I take that back he was extraordinarily Randy all the time. Does anyone really know what he was up to when he was spending all that time in France? I mean come on now….didn’t France invent the French Kiss and Ménage à trios? For a man like Franklin this must have been heaven on earth especially compared with the puritanical Colonial America of the 1770s. So it’s clear to everyone that old Uncle Benny should’ve said, “The only thing certain in this world is death, taxes and men are always in the mood for sex.” That would’ve been 100% accurate and let’s be honest this would’ve made his quote even more famous. But is that really correct about men always being in the mood? Some say NO!

Our guest today Sarah Hunter Murray, PhD, challenges this notion that men’s unwaveringly high sexual desire is simply a long-held myth that is actually causing relationships needless suffering in her latest book coming out February 12th “Not Always in the Mood: The New Science of Men, Sex, and Relationships”. WHAT….Men are NOT always in the mood for sex? What is she talking about that’s crazy!! Or is it? Sarah has the research and the big PhD brain to back her statement up. For over a decade, she has dedicated her career to examining the nuances of sexuality as they affect modern relationships. Sarah is a regularly sought-after sex and relationship expert for media outlets including Men’s Health, Fashion Magazine,Elle and Today’s Parent. Her research has been featured in LiveScience, Mic.com, Jezebel, and The Globe and Mail. She authors the blog “Myths of Desire: Rethinking Sex Roles and Expectations that Stifle Relationships” for Psychology Today. As a practicing relationship therapist, she specializes in working with individuals and couples around sexual intimacy concerns. Ok Ok….She has the street cred and social proof from credible media outlets to make a bold statement but let’s listen to her in this awesome interview explain exactly what she means.

Men are not always in the mood….what’s she talking about? Let’s find out together!
