RE the practice of Mettā (= Loving Kindness; Unconditional Good Will to All Beings without Distinction), Ajahn Dhammasiha points out that we should treat people that are angry like we treat people that have fallen sick:
When we encounter someone suffering from flu, or perhaps even disabled in a wheelchair, we usually do not feel angry at them for being sick.
Instead, we rather feel compassion, and an urge to help them, or at least to treat them especially kindly.
Ideally, we even try to help them to recover from their sickness.
Similarly, when we encounter anyone suffering from 'mental sickness', namely the defilements (kilesa) of anger or jealosy or hatred, we should have the same attitude: Not getting angry at them, but giving them special kindness.
Ideally we even try to help them recover, just like a good doctor would do. And of course, we can't cure anger with anger; only by treating them with loving kindness, compassion, and equanimity can we help them to heal from their anger.
