Middle Class Film Class

The gang spends one hot day in Bed-Stuy this week, as they review the classic Spike Lee film, Do The Right Thing (1989). Spike Lee sort of stars in his 3rd feature after She's Gotta Have It and School Daze, taking place on a sweltering humid day in Brooklyn. Sal's Pizzeria is a standard eatery and hang out spot in the neighborhood until it becomes the site of a perceived racial injustice. Featuring a cast of characters that are super memorable, and a cast of actors that is a variatble who's who of Hollywood go-to's, this movie should be required viewing for sheer entertainment, and the complex social messaging wrapping it all together.

No Tyler this week, so tune in to hear Joseph and Tyler's take on the classic film.

The gang shags a celebrity this week as they review the classic British-American rom-com, Notting Hill. Starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in their primes, it's no wonder this was a smash hit at the turn of the new millennium. But how will the 25 year-old sensibilities of this foundational romantic comedy hold up to the gang in the present day? Watch along, then listen in to find out.

The gang bites the curb this week as they review the hard-to-watch but meaningful film, American History X. Anyone who has seen this movie can usually pick out 2-3 very hard to watch scenes that are burned into their heads forever. It's not for the faint of heart, but for a purpose. One of the more impactful films, in the likes of Come and See, or Requiem For a Dream, where many times the viewer is a different person after watching the film. Watch along if you dare, then listen to the guys give their review of Tyler's pick from the Wheel of Destiny

The gang kick starts Mother Earth this week, as they review the world-ending disaster movie that was ahead of it's time, The Core (2003). A stacked cast (Aaron Eckhart, Hillary Swank, Bruce Greenwood, DJ Quals, Richard Jenkins, and DELROY LINDOOOOOOO) and a hefty runtime full of PS2 cutscene-level CGI, with a few winks at the camera make for a very fun and stupid time. If you have not seen this cable TV classic, give it a watch and you won't regret it... hell, you don't even have to start it at the beginning! That's the beauty of this sort of foolishness

The gang gets a burn this week as they shack up with TR and live on the outskirts, while reviewing Suburbia (2983) directed by Penelope Spheeris. After the critical success of The Decline of Western Civilization a few years prior, Penelope Spheeris wanted to make a more narrative look at the burnout punk scene in America, taking stories pulled from the real life subjects of her documentary. She even got many of them to lace up their acting shoes and step in front of the camera and portray versions of themselves. Art imitates life, but does anyone care? Watch for yourself, then tune in to see how Tyler (his pick), Joseph, and Pete liked Suburbia
